Not sure on the AUI ... but I know AUII uses a Engine Cylinder Head Temp (ECHT) sensor in the driver's side rear corner of the head ... and as Stav mentioned it doesn't going into the water jecket ... just into the alloy only. If the temp sender fails ... your gauge will read off the top or the bottom all the time.

Id suggest if it's a load issues on a hot day ... it maybe a water pump corroded out (literally no internal vanes left) ... if doesn't need to be leaking for it to not work efficiently. I was lucky enough to find that out when trying to troubleshoot an overheating issue myself.

I gave up in the end though ... and traded my ute in before it got to Summer again.

I ended up replacing:
Header tank.
All hoses
ECHT sensor
radiator (with a twin core)
water pump
moved the external trans cooler
thermostat (twice)

I also had the thermofan relay mod done as well ... as soon as A/C is turned on .. the thermos come on High speed (until you turn the A/C off).

Also tried to replace the head gasket thinking it was that ... the head wouldn't part ... so I just put a replacement engine in it (only had 60,000km on it) ... was cheaper in the long run ... also replaced my auto at the same time for one that was built up for boost applications.

As I said ... gave up in the end and got rid of it.
