Default Satin Guard vehicle wrap

Seriously considering this as an option.
The results and the product seem to be outstanding
Costs about $2,300 for the film.
Full thread Here
Few pics below..... opinions ?
Personally I reckon everyone driving a FG should get it done never mind us sad sacks with BA's...

personally i like the idea of the film.
i think it wont be long until auto paint is available like this too.
bake it on with uv light etc.

the only problem with the protection film is the application method.
the fitters use a sharp knife to cut it,
it would leave a scratch on every edge of panels, badges lights, etc etc

No scratches anywhere if applied correctly....I don't think the benz owner would accept that. Have a look at their website to see the cars they've done

Its never going to be a budget option. cost of the film is in the first post plus shipping from the states. Biggest issue would be a trustworthy shop to apply it. Premier do specific training at their shops. Otherwise vinyl/bodyshop guys wouwork..... but it'd have to be perfect.

It would be worth it, to not have to deal with stone chips in the paintwork. I swear the paint thickness is barely one or two atoms at most!

True. this film is 8mm thick
Its not bullet proof but after a few years individual panels can be redone

It's a good idea, but I'm more privy to the use of clear gloss ventureshield. You don't even know it is there because its a gloss film.

Matt coloured cars has been done and dusted nowadays. the CLK black came out years ago, I've got ventureshield all over the Renault and every time I a mark on it, I know that that is a mark that would have otherwise been on the body/paint.

Asked them for a price not long ago as well but baulked at the price which is to be expected for the quality. Problem is if you did get the roll and who ever does the fitting stuffs up i doubt they will pay for extra material.
The project would cost you over $5 grand i would say.

Tell me about it...I questioned the Ford dealer about our G6E when we took it in for a service a while back...any little rub harder than an angels kiss and it scratches and marks the "Edge" paint....honestly, you can mark it with a fingernail! They checked it out and said it appeared OK and "thick enough", but he also said he personally owned an FG XR6 turbo in black, and he would never buy a dark colour from Ford again. Going by the lack of paint on other areas of the car where they leave bare metal, I think they're doing a bit of cost saving on paint.

If that coating was available in high gloss, it'd be magic! I don't like the idea of a matt finish for several reasons, but the lack of being able to keep it clean properly is a put-off. I don't know if the film is different to paint, but I remember a motoring review of a matt finish Merc that said "if bird crap gets on it, it MUST be cleaned of immediately, you can't put it through a carwash, you can't polish it, rain must be cleaned off straight away", and a few other qualifiers. Look cool? Maybe to some people...but practicality goes right out the window...

Gloss version is clear see though, very shiny looks awesome IMO (pic below)

Thread for that car Here

As for the Matt finish being hard to keep. It depends on the film....... these are the best and just require a shampoo and dry off. The bird crap rule applies regards of paint or wrap IMO. Who the heck would take their car through a car wash and not expect the finish to be wrecked ? Can't polish it.....doesn't need to be (but can be...there are specific products for it)

In the next few months I'll be doing my car so I can get first hand experience. I'm in LA in September and I'll do some traning with them if I can organise it within the time frame I'm there.

Looks great but whats the lifespan of this film. I know its not the same as vinyl but how long would it last before it starts popping out of deep recesses, shrinking & lifting.

I think that to keep it looking good it would have to be redone every 2-5 years.

Ozishield in Ringwood. Brilliant guy. I paid $770 for the whole front, door pillars, mirrors, under the door handles/boot button, side skirts and door mouldings, and behind the wheel arches.

Whole car option was there but takes a few days and is worth more like $3-5k depending on car size.

I think you mean 0.8mm thick? 8mm would be as thick as a slice of bread.

I think the matte finish comes up really well, but too expensive really.

As for cost its all relative.

If you get it done make sure it is a Cast Vinyl and not a Calendered Vinyl and it gets post heated on the recesses and curves, usually between 90c to 110c. The heating after install removes the memory of the vinyl and stops lifting.

Cutting on the car is a skill that is learned and there is no reason that paint should get cut. Can put vinyl on bare skin and cut it without drawing blood, it definitely allays the doubters fears.

Also, I do Demos of wrapping and training courses for a large Manufacturer, so can get most vinyls at a good price, message me and I can get a price and where you can buy it.

Sorry, havnt posted enough to reply to a PM lol, so here is the answer.

Hi Garry,

we use a heat gun after the vinyl is applied to make the vinyl lose its desire to shrink. Basically it sets it in place. What type of vinyl you get matters a lot as to ease of install. Some have grooves in the glue to allow bubble free install. Heres a video to look at, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLsmPbPyE00

Nano Film is made by Avery, and carries a Warranty that is actually honoured and you can get a warranty card.

How does it perform in terms of static build up? Those of us who remember vinyl records might wonder if vinyl wrap moving through air might build static in the same way rubbing vinyl records did.

Thats the film, and it always comes down to the installer as to whether you get a good job or not. An Avery Specialist Installer is the best to use if using that product. They get tested and appraised before accreditation.
