Amazing, since we told the world we were heading the KB route, we have had no end of people sending us this link Bob - the whine sure does send a shiver down!!

Developing the system in house has been fun - we are building 2 setups at the moment, a 16psi race and a 22psi street (yes, thats right, 22psi street)

Should make a feral noise!! will keep you posted.

Just out of curiousity...is it possible to get rid of the "whine" in superchargers? What actually makes that sound?

Just thinking from a daily driving point of view. Some of them can get quite loud. Its ok for race days but going to and from work could get annoying after a while. Just curious whether there was some way to hide the noise.

The KB chargers ar really not that noisy compared to the side mount style and really are only loud when you are giving it heaps which you shouldn't be doing on the street anyway

Keeping the PSI at low levels can keep the whine sound down aswell. You should find at about 6psi it's only faintly there for normal daily driving.

Most blowers just have straight-cut gears. Replacing with helical cut gears would eliminate some of the whining.

Kenne Bell blowers cheat a bit by using angular cut gears to quiet them down a bit, but they're not as affective in cutting noise down as helical gears.

Yeh been in a 6psi KB boss and was very minimal, actually sounded awsome under throttle but just crusing you could hardly hear it.

wow, that is a very nice Mustang.

Reminds me of my old AUI XR8, I had a STA blower on it with 7psi and she whined like that stationary. Something like that could get me back in a BOSS.

Wokkas, the noise of the positive displacement supercharger has nothing to do with the gear design it has everything to do with the inlet and discharge design of the supercharger housing and of the actual rotor design. This is why at idle or crusing where the supercharger is making no boost they are quite in operation unlike that of most centrifugal superchargers where gear design has alot to do with noise emmisions. Whipple factory training was a good eye opener. :

Very well put Matt.

The M112 Eaton we used in our early testing (the unit we ran the first 10 sec pass with) used to really scream, it was being driven fairly hard to make 9psi, whereas the Kenne Bell unit is well below its max range @ 9psi. With an exhaust on my ute, it is still relatively quiet compared to an eaton at the same boost level which is being driven much harder.

My 16psi setup should be a nice street/race compromise. Just putting finishing touches on the engine now, and when we get the best we can from the stock engine @ 9psi with NOS, we will thow the new combo in, remove the laughing gas and have some fun.

The 20psi combo should be interesting, its going to see some circuit work, so there will be something for everyone!!

You don't won't to get rid of the Whine. in the car i sounds like music to my ears and under load even better. When drivng along you don't even know its there. But when you stick your foot in hold ON :

I realise that mate, hence me saying using helical gears will eliminate "some" of the whining. I know the characteristic whine of a blower has nothing to do with the gears, but any straight cut gears (especially those seen running the speeds on blowers) is going to create non-contact noise. Just food for thought on a different area of noise.

By the way, what sort of gears are in the whipples?

The Eaton M90 we use in some of the lower power kits uses straight cut gears, this is the same s/c used by Holden for the s/c-6 commodores and they are as quite as a mouse. If the gearing is a source of noise then they would be noisey at idle and low speeds also, not just when creating boost, similar to a gear drive we used to put in 'real' hottys in the 80's . The percentage of low speed noise associated with big 6-71 superchargers and the like is from the gilmer style belt used as they use a very wide belt and square cut pulleys. The Kevlar Polychain belts we used on the Autorotor and then later Whipple supercharger kits when I was employed by another company in early 2000 was a toothed belt but it uses a slightly rounded profile which kept the noise down, they were very expensive. Top fuel/alcohol use Polychain belts also. The Whipple supercharger uses a helical cut gear set.

Well I must say Chris, thank you very much for the ride today in a Blue Power blown car today.
The first thing I had to do once I got home was change my Y Fronts as I think I dropped a my load somewhere up the Hume HWY.

All I can say WOW.

I want one now I best do some sucking to the misses. . . . .

(does anyone know the phone number of a florist and diamond jeweller)
