This maybe be a silly question but - At what point does a station wagon become a shooting brake and where did the term come from?

Shooting-brake, shooting brake or shooting break is a term for a car body style that has evolved through several distinct meanings over its history. Shooting-brake originated as an early 19th century British term[1] for a vehicle used to carry shooting parties[2] with their equipment and game. The term brake[3] was initially a chassis used to break-in horses—and was subsequently used to describe a motorized vehicle. The term was later applied to custom-built wagons by high-end coachbuilders and subsequently became synonymous with station wagon or estate.[4][5][6][7][8] In contemporary usage, the term shooting-brake has broadened to include a range of vehicles from five-door station wagons—to three-door models combining features of a wagon and a coupé. In 2006, The New York Times said the shooting-brake was conceived "to take gentlemen on the hunt with their firearms and dogs."[9] and "although [its] glory days came before World War II, and it has faded from the scene in recent decades, the body style is showing signs of a renaissance as automakers seek to invent (or reinvent) new kinds of vehicles for consumers constantly on the hunt for the next new thing."[9] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting-brake

I think it becomes a shooting brake when the practicality of a wagon is removed so much in the pursuit of style, for it to be basically useless as a wagon anymore

Shooting brake seems to be the yuppie Euro term for a mostly useless wagon, which is focused on looks more than practicality.

A wagon based on a sports model, is pretty much what it was originally, whether factory or not...I've seen old Blower Bentley "Shooting Brakes" from the late 1930's, I've seen a Jaguar XJS "Shooting Brake", I've even seen a Ferrari once that was modified (an old 308 GTB I believe if I remember right).

Benz do a CLS shooting brake, which they market here. It's pretty ungainly to my eye.
A better pic. But it has the $4,500 option of a marine timber floor which is cool, although stuff would slide everywhere. Lol

A wagon to most is a wagon. Make a wagon out of a Euro car where there is some form os "superiority" about it's branding or origins, and it seems to become a shooting break. Anything for the masses which is common as muck is a wagon, where anything "exclusive" where the car is more set to appeal to the eye rather than practicality is a shooting break. Never said any of them were not nice to look at or undersirable. so what's the problem? P.s. Please feel free to tell me the modern reference to a yuppie so that i do not offend you so much next time.

Normal wagon in Europe/UK is referred to as an 'Estate'. Shooting brake is used to be based on a sports coupe chassis with an extended roofline and opening tailgate.
Riley Scimitar is a classic example A few coachbuilt Astons were produced back in the day (Not that pretty IMO) |

When I was a little tacker in England back in the 50's (yes, I'm that old) a station wagon was always called a shooting brake.
The term Station Wagon was always considered too American. Much the way they call the boot the trunk and say hood instead of bonnet.
