As the subject suggests, I've got $7k and I want to get back in to a Ford and out of a Holden... I know, I know, I should have never defected... But the 2009 Territory had the same dash as the 2002 BA I had, I just couldn't do it.
ANNNNNNNNNNYWAY... I'm selling my '09 Captiva, to go back to a good old Ford, so I can save for a house. Anyone got any suggestions for what I should spend the pennies on??? I'm no mechanic, so I'm not looking for some massive project. Having said that I'm not totally useless with a spanner either. I turn it over to the floor |

I'd go with a late E series XR or an early AU. I've done some reseach myself so I can keep some Ks off my ute. If you enjoy some form of reasonable fuel economy, with modern comforts, then go with something that has EFI and runs on ULP standard. Do you really want to buy fuel additive every week? That's more money toward your house in my opinion.
A few months ago, there was an EF on Carpoint for $8,800 with a genuine 11,000Ks on the clock! That's the sort of think I would be looking for. I'm basing this off your comment that you had a BA and then the Captiva, so I'm thinking that you have become used to late model cars and what they offer a person using them for a daily driver. Save the old school stuff for a time when you have space in YOUR yard at YOUR house. |

For my daily driver,I did the same. Mine's done 330,000 kms so purchase price was only $500 LOL Spent two days cleaning it and fixing minor items. Only major things were new radiator and welsh plugs. Total repairs were $1500, so owes me $2000. Do as wrongwaynorris and I did and you've got another $5000 towards your house. |

Find manual EL XR6, modern comforts with the balls to surprise you. Could easily find a good reliable one for 5-6k.
For the same price maybe a bit cheaper EL Fairmont Ghia. Leather, climate control, electric everything with the Tickford engine and drive-line.

There's a very nice Polynesian Green ED XR8 at a local car yard in Mudgee at the moment for 5k and it's only done 190k, straight, clean and unmolested; very nice unit. Oh wait, you're down south in Mexico, bummer,

$7k is going to get you junk if you're looking for anything newer than an AU. A good clean AU of any vintage with low kms can be had for about 5k.
Most EF/EL's are flogged out, but still a few nice examples out there. Just take time to weed out the junk. If you can stomach the ugliness of the AU, then mechanically, its pretty much the best Falcon when Ford were still trying to pass off dinosaurs as new cars. They had that old horse and cart chassis and driveline well sorted by AU.

For $7K, your best buy in a Ford would be a AU Fairmont Ghia sedan or wagon. If you can find one with factory LPG, even better. A lot of car with all the fruits of a Ghia for less money. Can't beat it for value for money.

You may even find a V8 on gas! Also, there was no AU Fairmont Ghia wagon, just the Fairmont. Shame really. You won't do better than an AU for the price. All the best with the search. GK

AU or back to holden in my opinion..
you could get a decent AU with even a lil change from 7k and just keep it in the "what if my car breaks something" fund..

Is it a factory 351 + 4spd? With that kind of money you could pick up a nice series 2/3 fairmont (maybe a ghia). They make a great daily.

I'm with Mr Hardware, AU for sure, preferably dual fuel. Like I keep saying, all those taxi drivers can't be wrong.

EF-EL will be cheap and good value, AU is good for the money, and BA will have high KM's for that price.
As long as its Ford though, a low mileage Laser is also a possibility if your into that small stuff, dont think you will get a good Focus for that low yet. |

You have heaps of choices.. we need more about what you want.
Rubbish about BA's being high K's for that price, have a look around and you could find a nice futura with lowish k's for about what your looking at spending. I didn't have $7K... but I bought my EL Futura for $1750, factory 5 spd manual and LSD, 180,000 k's. Spent $1250 on new tires and clutch, $500 after rebate on LPG install so it costs as much to run as a camry, get yourself a nice cd player and some speakers, wheels/exhaust whatever you want (mine came with all that) and you've got yourself a great run around car... but like I said, so many options, just depends what you like.
