Australian new-car sales in June 2024: Market hits the brakes after 14 months of VFACTS growth

The longest streak in new-car sales growth in 20 years has come to an end, after the market recorded its first decline in 14 months.

A long-forecast slowdown in new motor vehicle sales in Australia appears to have finally arrived, after deliveries decline for the first time in June 2024 after 14 months of consecutive growth, the longest streak in 20 years.

June has historically been the biggest month of the year for new-car sales – ahead of the end of the financial year – and it was no different in 2024, recording 119,659 deliveries.

However, sales were down 4.2 per cent on the same month last year – and down 8.9 per cent on the all-time June record, set in 2017 with 134,171 deliveries – in a month that saw the Ford Ranger remain the top-selling new vehicle.

Since the start of this year, 632,412 new vehicles have been reported as sold – a new record – according to the data, which is collated by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

While it is up 8.7 per cent on the first half of last year – and 4.4 per cent on the previous best set in 2018 – the year-to-date tally was up 12.2 per cent at the end of May.

The Ford Ranger remained the top-selling new vehicle last month, a title it has held for 12 of the past 18 months after claiming the Toyota HiLux's seven-year annual sales crown last year.

The HiLux ended June in second place, ahead of the Toyota RAV4 family SUV, which settled to its usual third-place spot on 3907 sales after topping the charts in April for the third time in its history.

The Tesla Model Y was the only electric vehicle to finish in the Top 10 last month – recording 2906 deliveries for a fifth-placed result – though it is down a significant 48 per cent on its June 2023 tally, when Tesla set a sales record.

Electric vehicles accounted for 8.0 per cent of new vehicles reported as sold last month, down from 8.8 per cent the same month last year, according to FCAI data – a decline of 13.2 per cent in sales volume, in a market down 4.2 per cent.

Toyota remained the most popular new-vehicle brand last month, with 20,903 vehicles – a dip of 0.2 per cent compared to the same month last year, although it is still up 31.5 per cent year-to-date.

I find this hilarious, F150 gets introduced as some hack-job conversion by a third party and immediately starts moving more numbers than Escape, Mach E, Mustang, Transit Bus and Puma

Its not how you use it. It is the size that counts.

Ford at #2.
Image where they could be if they put as much enthusiasm and effort into developing some other models as they did to Ranger.

Pretty sure they don't care about some silly ranking on this little island.

I don't reckon anyone analyses v facts data like ford forums...

Then why did they put up such a fight over the government's new emissions scheme?

Quote:
Ford Australia’s response to the government’s NVES plan has five key components.

It wants a seven-year glide path to full implementation of the scheme; incentives including the ’super credits’; vehicle segmentation to exclude vehicles with a gross vehicle mass over 3500 kilograms; and a delayed start to any CO2 penalties.

It’s also calling for changes to ‘break points’, which align CO2 targets to particular vehicle weight thresholds, to prevent users in trades, agriculture, infrastructure and forestry from being negatively impacted.

It’s asking for the Government to remove these, or set the upper break points for both passenger and commercial vehicles at 2500kg. These are set at 2000kg and 2200kg, respectively, in the Government’s preferred Option B.

“It is our recommendation that penalties be applied only from 2026 at the earliest. Further, penalties should commence at $50 per g/km and grow annually over the scheme to a maximum of $100 per g/km,” Ford said.
They know having a two model lineup is under threat, particularly when they'd have absolutely nothing to counter the NVES for Australia as they've sat on their hands for a long time in Australia and they dumped their entire range except for a diesel Ute and a SUV based on a diesel Ute.

They're probably still doing over $400,000,000 sales per month....not too shabby.

Those other models would probably be on the ranger platform. Cut the tray off and voila - hatchback!

Or set up a C2 production line in Thailand to make multiple vehicles down the same line,
Maybe Maverick pickup and a companion SUV. Job done.

That's the problem, the government with a flick of a pen nearly took it away from them with the NVES, Ford US even recognises it as a problem.

I was curious about how it was selling myself. I thought the petrol option may have appealed to a few.

I guess it's always difficult to say if the market doesn't want petrol or doesn't want a vw petrol?

Amarok was first with v6 diesel many years ago, making reasonable power and torque yet the market didn't go for it.

I think if Ford offered the petrol in ranger it might be a different result. Diesel likely still be majority but I think they wouldn't need to do what vw are doing to sell it.

Market didn’t go for it? Considering it was 4wd dual cab pickup only they sold heaps. If vw had all the body styles it would have been a different story

It’s still the only dual cab that drove half decent. Even compared to the new one

And yet, people have no issue spending that sort of money on a Ranger, be that diesel or petrol (Raptor).

If Ford offered the 2.3 EcoBoost, it would be at the top of my recommendation list for when my father's Bi-Turbo Wildtrak is up for renewal.

And I know they will never offer it, but I would happily have the 2.3 EcoBoost over the Single-Turbo and Bi-Turbo 2.0-litre diesels currently on offer in the single cab. Hell, I'd be happy with the smaller 2.0 EcoBoost, be that the 149 kW or 178 kW versions. Imagine having that choice sitting beside the ancient 2.7 boat anchor in the Hilux.

No sane person is going to spend 80+k on a petrol Amarok when you can get into a Raptor for not a great deal more. The engines offered at the wrong end of model line up. If Ford offered it in XL-XLT Rangers it would sell ok I think. Especially if it was cheaper than the diesels which it should be.

Raptor sells like hotcakes and the Patrol has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years, people are starting to come around to petrol 4X4s, especially if they have a bit of go about them. Would love to see some petrols offered in the Everest.

The Hilux Workmate 2.7L is the front runner for me as far as a single cab ute goes.

If I end up with a new Toyota that means everyone here needs to send me to the insane asylum because my one braincell I have left has finally died

Yeah, because you get near 300kw and decent suspension. The petrol Amarok is hardly a value proposition in comparison.

Mates looking at a new car at the moment but doesn't want diesel, I mentioned the VW Amarok but the Ecoboost version

Flat out refusing to even look at it because VAG, then laments no unleaded Ranger.

Even though they are the same vehicle, he refuses to buy anything VW.

What is there on the new car market that's turbo unleaded sub $80K in an SUV or ute?

Requirement is no hybrid as well they're ditching a hybrid Volvo because hybrid is WOFTAM for country driving and they don't want to risk another hybrid tax.

Raptor sells like hotcakes and the Patrol has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years, people are starting to come around to petrol 4X4s, especially if they have a bit of go about them. Would love to see some petrols offered in the Everest.
Full retail D/A on the Ecoboost Amarak was actually more like $90k... because its only on the top spec. Had they of offered it on the lower spec like the Style (which is around XLT/Sport money) they may of had more uptake but I think it doesn't help that people don't seem to want VW stuff in general. Your right though, you can get a Raptor, in stock at the moment it seems, for mid $90k's. If I where in the market (and I was temped to change my Everest Platinum for a Raptor but wifey said no...lol) I would 100% spend the extra $5k and get the Raptor its only, what, 5ish% extra....

Good points.
I noticed the Amorok 2.3T uses a bit more fuel (9.9) than the 3.0 TD (8.5) and is slightly slower in 0-100 kph.
If you’re going to spend +$89K on Amorok Adventura model to ge the turbo petrol, V6 diesel is only $1,700 more.
I really wonder just how many sales of the 2.3T VW will get, doubt the the petrol engine is worth the effort.

Bu then, I looked at Ranger models Sport, Wildtrak, Platinum and Raptor, Ford really has the field covered
with high models. Those Rangers are bloody nice looking and the V6 diesel goes pretty good or just
go all out and get the Raptor for top power of the 3.0 V6 Ecoboost
