And thats exactly how i put it into my calculator as-well.

A1=48
A2=2
A3=9
A4=3

The extra brackets starting and endind the equation are simply a MS office quirk to formulate the cell

=SUM(A1/A2(A3+A4))
leaving out the '*' before the brackets on creates an invalid equation

A1=48
A2=2
A3=9
A4=3

Then work left to right.
No operator before the brackets implies a multiplication.
So we effectively have
48÷2X(9+3)
48÷2X12
24X12
288

Rule 2: Everything in the brackets first

20 ÷ 10 X 3^2 - 2
rule 3: Exponents

20 ÷ 10 X 9 - 2
Rule 4: Multiply and Divide as they appear

18 - 2
Rule 5: Add or Subtract as they appear

Now Left To Right!
=48/2x12
=24x12
=288

Is that all try 45 years ago and all the acronyms sound like dumba5s it was in the day of the dinosaur in brackets first then the unsigned multiplication because that is what a number against a bracket meant then the division so should end up as 2 no wonder the girl at the coffee shop could not figure out the change when I gave her the odd 60 cents to give me an even $5.00 change after she had punched in the $20.00 I had tendered when the items came to $15.60

I seem to remember a physics PhD on here rabbiting on in the head on/wall debate tell us that he was right because he was a PhD and taught physics.

The only thing that academics fear is being proven wrong.
If the answer is 2 but all of the software and systems show 288 then the legal ramifications are beyond spectacular. All the "experts" here can make bazillions suing Microsoft for damages......off you go.....
