No problem DOC...Im a very realistic person and logical (there are those that might argue against that mind you), and I would gladly help out anyone in anyway that was going to offer a fantastic service etc simply because I know my ideas are pipe dreams (for now). But, the point I guess I have been trying to make is that there is a market and if someone has the dosh to take care of that market they would make a bucket load simply because there is a lot of people sick and tired of spending their hard earned (generally anyway) cash at places that dont stock the exact items, arent really that cheap (if you get a bargain, think of the poor sucker ten steps behind you that just paid for it), or are simply unhelpful or rude....... I hope that makes sense. (gee I do take a long time to actually get to a point eh - sorry) |

I think it's safe to say that the future looks bright for motoring enthusiasts sick of dealing with rude storepeople who don't know anything about what they're selling, and that's good news for us all.

Simply don't shop there, I don't buy anything from supercheaps, repco, autobarn or any retail auto outlets as they don't carry what I use (lubricants etc) or other things I want to get

I wear my kung fu t shirt mate. They dont ask me questions and serve me quickly!!Especially when I am unshaven and look cranky.Ill wear whatever tshirt I like when ever I like.If they act like idiots because of being holden sponsors then it is likely they are idiots every other day. Holdens have a myriad of problems just like any other car and it doesnt mean that I have tell everybody or put their owners down. But I must admit that in recent times than no holden has been able to keep up with me.This is punishment enough for them.

Getting back to the original subject....bad service does suck majorly. As others have already said it shouldn't matter how much the staff are getting paid (I'm sure the Repco or Bursons staff are getting paid much the same) they are paid to do a job and should do it. If they don't like the work or the pay or the boss then they can look for another job. No one is forcing them to stay there.
As for starting up your own autoparts shop....it would require a large capital outlay to start off with. You would need to find a suitable location (no good being in some seedy back alley only frequented by druggos or drunks), pay a bond and some rent in advance for the right shop, fit the shop out with shelving, counters etc (preferably new stuff, want it to look professional, not like some half-ar$ed thing), work out what stock you want to carry and what quantity, find suppliers, set up accounts (suppliers probably won't be too keen to give much credit to first time start-up business so you may need to pay cash for stock for a few months to build up credit rating), hire staff (it costs roughly double a persons wage when taking into account all the on-costs like Workers Comp, Superannuation, uniforms, sick leave, holiday leave, leave loading etc etc), advertise (where? radio, newspaper, magazine, TV, letterbox flyers, motorsport sponsership?) and a million and one other things that I haven't mentioned. I estimate it would cost around $100,000 to start up, maybe even more. Someone mentioned attack, as in setting up next door to Super cheap. Not sure if this is a good idea. Near where Iive there is a Super Cheap with an Autobarn next door. Most of the time SC is very busy while there are usually more staff than customers at Autobarn. When SC have their 20% off sales the shop just goes ballistic. You have to park your car 500m down the road and walk and then push and shove your way through the crowds to get into the store. It's all about marketing for SC. They have (arguably) catchy, humerous ads and the name says it all - Super Cheap Auto. Most of their products are cheaper than other car accessory shops (a lot of it is cheap Asian import rubbish, but when people don't expect too much because it's cheap), though some other shops will beat or match prices but the punters see the name Super Cheap and presume it is. Maybe you could start off with a "virtual" store and start off selling via the internet for a few months until business grows. Much cheaper and easier to build an internet store rather than a bricks and mortar one! |

In reply to this thread, I ran an automotive/wheel/tyre workshop. We have a national account with Repco and spend around 280,000 dollars monthly across our 40+ network of stores, and frankly Repco dont give a damn. Parts dont arrive when promised, if at all.. "but the computer showed 4, ill have to get it for you tomorrow" thats just not good enough when a car is on a hoist half dismantled and been promised to a customer by the end of the day, especially when ordered at 8am. As an example I have ordered a 19-21mm double ended socket 2months ago and am still waiting, even when promised by their rep that he will personally bring it in. He comes fortnightly and manages a new excuse as to why he hasnt got it fo me as yet. In such situations I call Bursons, which I spend stuff all with get the parts asap but have to pay cash, and the price wont vary more than a couple of dollars. In short, in my opinion Repco are a group of inexperienced and unwilling to help twirps.
