Interesting topic though, at what stage is it Australian made, assembled or imported?

By 2016 it will be on its last leg - once the machines are gutted out, it will make a nice Aldi store with super carpark.

If we put this figure in relation to our Asian competitors then you quickly realise if that figure was 45k, 55k, 65k, 75, ets it would still make manufacturing in Australia a loosing business proposition.

The average wage for a high tech factory worker in China is $400 per month, that's under $5000 a year!!! and now consider that their weekly hours are 50 - 60, annual leave would be under 10 days, sick leave would be a few days at best, RDO don't exist, superannuation is a pipe dream, and workers comp do I even need to mention it?

No matter how small or large the pay cut will be one fact will still remain, Manufacturing in Australia will never be cost competitive against Asia.

Dana used to buy ERW tube from Onesteel but upgraded to DOM tube from another supplier as ERW was not strong enough and not suited for future driveshafts. As it stands today Holden should be in a way better position as costs are involved as a majority of T1 supplier parts are from overseas already. Only the majors like engine, body and other are still local.

Thats why we shouldnt compete with Asia. We cant on cost grounds, We can compete on quality, innovation and technology. If we choose to.

Many year's ago, the father of a Ford co-worker was offered the option of early retirement from his senior position at Ford. Two cars for life anywhere in the world, free medical for life, and full pension.

When I worked at Ford, staff were driving fully maintained Lasers at (from memory) $7 a week.

You're not alone in quoting base salary only; next time you hear a nurse whinging about their wages, ask them about the $10k odd tax-free component, and their unlimited $$$ tax-free meal and entertainment card.

So back to the point made by others way back... anyone looking at labour costs as an input to the cost of manufacturing needs to be quoting the hourly rate paid to the workers + ALL on costs.
Your kidding yourself if you think we get these sort of perks. Executives get lease cars in their salary package, and can keep a car upon retirement, non execs have to fund a lease themselves, and it sure as hell ain't $7 a week. Forget what you heard about who got what back in the 80's and 90's or whatever, those days are long gone and any of those schemes that cost Ford money were axed years and years ago.

They used to have a Claytons scheme back in the pre 90's where if an employee bought a car, the company would buy it back off them after 6 or 12 months or whatever it was, for the price they paid for it. But the recession we had to have put paid to that. Along with a bunch of other employee perks that got cut once the cost cutters swung the axe.

yes they are the "only supplier" in OZ because every other company is just a trading name for one steel.

http://www.bluescopesteel.com/about-us/history Bluescope's history,

OneSteel (Arrium) and Bluescope are not the same they did both come from the former BHP (OneSteel was spun off from BHP in 2000) Bluescope was formed in 2003 (basically BHP's steel division so BHP could concentrate on mining.

Yes, I am in the industry and the car companies do use local and imported content (I am not sure of %)

eb2fairmont - No iron ore can be sourced from a variety of places (Vale is massive mining company that supplies a lot of iron ore from different locations round the world mostly Brazil I believe)
My apologies for going off topic

A quick check on the Orix website tells me that a fully maintained G6E Turbo (retail $51123) doing 15,000km on a 1 year lease would cost approximately $30,000 pa (depending on the packaging method used).
Are you telling me that is what a Ford exec is paying today?
Are you telling me that is what a Ford non-exec is paying today?

It would be around $200 or more a week, not sure on exact figures but its not $7. Probably more nowdays with the changes to FBT.

Don't know about execs cause lease vehicles are included in their salary packages.

How the hell can a lease car be $30k a year when its only worth $51k. That's just absurd. Who in their right mind would pay that, even if it does include fuel, insurance etc its still a massive rip off.

Im pretty sure the 30 k is total cost including lease payments, insurance, servicing, rego, and of course fuel.
Im pretty sure the3 RACV did a study, may do it every year, but certainly during the 90's I remember them declaring a new commodore cost $1 per Km traveled.

EDIT
Here is a link to a 2012 RACQ study

You have to remember that Ford is supply a car which it produced to it's employee, it didn't pay anyone anything apart from the actual input costs in making it and isn't paying a finance supplier anything to fund it. This is different to say a phone company providing an employee a car and having to buy/lease/finance it at commercial rates.

my sister leases an i-max people mover and I can tell you it is allot more than they say on there they pay about $300 a week

if it is the actual costing i think she needs to look elsewhere for a better deal

If Joe Public was earning $55k per annum and leased a G6E Turbo using the Novated Statutory Method, his annual net salary would be $15.411.17 ; that's $300 a week to live on after he paid for the car. http://www.orix.com.au/novated-leasing/calculator.html

So maybe I'm not kidding myself after all? That's 1/3 of what Joe Public pays for a non-exec and even less for an exec.

People who don't receive PERKS!!!

BTW I'm not against you receiving perks - I've had my fair share too, but I am against people like the AWU who do not include TOTAL remuneration and benefits when quoting wages.

Don't know what your on about buddy, the table supplied for 2012 gives cost per Km, per week and annually based on the criteria they outline at the bottom of the page. Im going to go with their research over your sisters...Remember they are quoting averages as outlined, and youll see its quite expensive to run a car
