Ovakil was definitely my favorite. But the one that sticks in my mind the most was the black supercharged torana which used the Richmond raaf base runway to do fire burnouts. Car was beautifully presented, and this guy would rip these burnouts that would explode into flames. Quite amazing images. I've still got the mag somewhere.

I'm a mate of Big Gaz and just noticed the posts on Ovakil. Thought I'd post a photo of the motor out of the two door where it currently lives. He's building up an LSR XJS Jag..... Ovakil is still in the shed exactly as it was 20 years ago. It still looks great and will return to the roads one day after we finish the Jag.
The jag has been chopped 3 inches and sits about an inch off the ground. It comes up to my belt buckle. The motor and Doug Nash 5 speed are the only bits from OVAKIL to be put into the car (apart from Gaz!). There's a build page on the DLRA website if you want a more detailled look - www.dlra.org.au/forum Go to Build Diaries and then Shaguar |

Last time I saw that car they had repainted it in the factory colours of blue with white stripes back when muscle cars prices were insane in the US. They couldn't get the money they wanted here I believe and the car was shipped back to the US where it was sold. The guys who owned it here in australia (Kevin Monk) bought the car to Oz in the early 70s when the prices of wing cars fell through the floor with the oil embargoes and so forth. He used to tow a caravan with it believe it or not. |

I remember the frank piccolos XB well, I was cruisin in my XC GXL in those days,
I was 17 and that XB car really turned me into a one eyed Ford fan forever. (ps piccolo mean small in italian, hehe) I cant believe anyone hasnt mentioned KING COUPE. This car was a factory XA GT COUPE with factory sunroof and was converted into a fire breathing 1000 horsepower road registered car, it was the toughest car ive ever seen in my life with number plates, any else remember it?

I will be biased here and say what about Jigsaw. The FJ Holden that had Camira front lights and Laser tail lights. It had a blown 149 6 pack in it. I think the builder still owns it tucked away in a shed. The builder painted my car way back 1991 and i'm hoping to get him out of retirement so to speak, to freshen up my car again.

I liked the green 'FREDDO' X series Falcon, though technically I think it was built in the 90's. Can't track anything down right now on the net but I know it was around until at least fairly recently (5-6years). Anybody know the car I'm talking about?

Anyone seen this month's edition yet? With a few flashbacks? Ron Barclay is in there - apparently he's bought the ute back.
Scorpion PV is in there as well. |

Plenty of favorites from back in those days...got all the mags from back then.
Even have issue number one of "Street Machine". It started out as "Van Wheels", then went to "Van Wheels" with a tiny "& Street Machines" underneath the header, then it went to "Street Machine" with "Van Wheels" in small font, then dropped the "Van Wheels" part altogether. Lot of great cars, lot of great memories...the end of the Ford clevo, the "V8's Till 98" campaign everyone signed to send in petitions to Holden, the articles when turbos started to become "the big thing" (and didn't people start to complain after a few issues..."what the hell is with all the turbo crap? No one needs to know that rubbish!"). Articles on rudimentary aftermarket fuel injection systems...those were the days. Headlines about the "amazing" outputs of factory SS Commodores that were less than a lot of four cylinder cars nowadays... |

I was a bit crook a couple of weeks ago, and being bored s*%tless decided to get out all my mags out of the shed - every Custom Vans & Trucks, every Street Machine etc. etc. It's amazing how many things we take for granted technology wise these days, yet it was ground breaking news only a couple of decades ago........
Favorite Cars? Even though I'm a one eyed Ford fan, I will always remember Greg Carlson's WB Ute, before his Pro Street Commodore. It was featured in a Street & Custom magazine (on the cover) and it was pure car porn in the 80's! Black on Black, chopped roof , tubbed with a big blower as high as the roof, WB Statesman front etc. Anybody remember that? Also Litre8 SLR Keith Black Torana. That was and will always be my favorite Holden. What I find funny right now is that there is not one Ford that really stands out for me from the 80's. Sure, Howard Astill's Rock falcons were classy and clean, but perhaps not as radical to remember such as the cars mentioned above along with BLOBAK, Webster's FJ etc. Am I still a true Ford fan for actually admitting this? I hope so! cheers Colin

When Street Machine turned up at the guy's house for the photo shoot he had a Learjet parked in the front yard The Jag was still a neat looking car but I doubt the owners to speed claim I have almost every SM mag since the first one up until a couple of years ago when it got just too Bogan and started adding F**kin Harleys and choppers, The hatred towards Jap cars is unbelievable and unwarranted, You can have a turbo Skyline powered VL Commonbore but not a turbo Skyline??????? I also have some old Van Wheels and SM incorporating Van Wheels
