A concern in NZ is the amount Ford are discounting current XR6 models (33%) just to compete with SV6 run-out lease pricing. BF2 needs to be an obvious leap forward to attract the punters Ford are not getting with BF. If the XR series dont look different what else is there???

Fordoldie, Ford have a real contender in the fact that they have a proven, successful vehicle and have only added to it. Additionally, Ford have made their car go on a diet in order to compete with the Holden, and have beaten it by 0.7L/100km. This may only be a pittance but it is only 0.3L/100km more than the 4 pot camry.
Holden on the other hand has a nice car that is at the beginning of its life cycle yet it has a 1 billion dollar debt to recover. What this means in sales terms is that they will not be able to substantially discount their car to fleets as they have in the past, and some motoring journo's rate fleets as up to 70% of Holden commodore sales. If they can't discount as aggressively then they may end up not receiving the sales the VZ etc did, and as such vehicles like toyota and ford may find new favour with the fleets. If this is to be the case, then Holden will not be the most popular brand as they struggle against ford already with regards to private sales. That is why ford may have a real contender.

Just to clear up, will the Falcon be removed as Ford's family car and be replaced by the "Orion", or is Orion simply the codeword for the 2008 Falcon?

My impression is that the Falcon is on its last legs name-wise and Orion will become the new name.

But once again, clear this up for me please as I am a fool who likes Darrel Lea Licorice and Ruffles.

It will still be the Falcon, Ford would be stupid to toss a name as well known and as popular as the FALCON. Even ANZ are getting in on it hahaha.

When has a Ghia ever had an XR8 engine. From what i can remember Ghia's had XR6 motors from EFII to AU. Then back to stockers on BA. But the V8's have always just been the base tune version.

Didnt the el2 Fairmont have the 185 windsor same as the el2xr & au1xr8?

The only other car to ever get an XR8 engine was the AU LTD. Every LTD/Fairlane prior to AU only ever had stock running gear. Bit strange really considering the XR6 Motor in the Fairmont Ghia never made it to the LWB cars in the NF/L DF/L. I always found it quite amusing that a Fairmont Ghia got the L3 Stereo yet the Fairlane didn't only LTD.
My Mum drives a EF2 Ghia 6 and Dad has a DL LTD 8. And quite honestly besides the Elec Seats and some token trim enhancements the Ghia is the better car. Plus it goes and handles harder than the LTD too.

the fairmont ghia was pushed more towards sports orientated owners......as can be felt through the sports suspension and the XR6 motor...
the fairlane was basically a LWB Fairmont in trim.....untill it got free leather with NL

LTD was the cushy soft handling luxobarge....

so its no wonder the fairmont ghia feels the better car....... i'd still take the LTD though

Yeah the LTD is a nice car. But for me the Ghia is just so much more a complete package. The fact that Dads LTD has a 5 litre doesn't interest me as I drive one everyday anyway and the windsor doesn't sound as good as my Holden 5 litre either. Plus the way the Ghia with its 3.45 (XR6) gears hooks up and revs hard to 5500 still surprises me everytime i drive it. Which isn't often since I dont live at home anymore.
But when i do it makes me remember that those things do have a bit of balls after all, kind of brings a smile to my dial. Something the breatless Windsor just cant match. Plus the ill handling of the LTD (Yes its meant to be luxurious) but it just s**ts me. When it bucks and bounces off the smallest bump mid corner. But the Ghia will quite happily absorb bumps and when asked for shake its a**e all over the place. Giving me far better feedback than my SS ever could. It's quite good how they're setup I can jump in mum Ghia having not driven it for a year and throw it around till the cows come home with more ease than in my daily driver. God bless Ford suspension engineers.

You can get a fairmont Ghia in a 3V V8. But no BOSS 260 Motor.

As I remember didn't the Ghias get the Phase IV motors...

Muhahaha..

EL Ghia was one awesome mofo. Electric drivers was optional, as was the 6 stacker.. And the EL audio still sounds more impressive than BA..

Ghia with a XR6T or XR8 motor would make it the flagship model. And what a worthy flagship.

Your right it did have the stacker standard (occured EFII sometime) but there was a optional power drivers seat package.

My old mans last Ghia has it fitted. For 1996 it was a awesomely impressive car. Ford really peaked with that one.

Options were:

Power front seat Driver
Power Sunroof
Sports pack
Towbar

An EL Ghia was nearly my first car. 18k at the time was stretching my budget a bit though. I always liked the Tan Trim on the EL's But I found the speed adjustable steering a bit off putting

EL ghia came with the stacker and dsp stereo standard but the electric drivers seat was definately an option
