I get the awful feeling that both Mazda and Hyundai will go past Ford's Australian sales
in the next couple of years and Marin will still be singing Falcon's praises as viable with most sales
heading towards or above $50,000. I agree, without Falcon, Ford would be stuffed in this country,
people try to sing the praises of Focus and Mondeo but they are getting pummelled in sales.

It is concerning, yes. A third vehicle line certainly would be beneficial. Not a C car; there is too much competition in that segment to generate any substantial return on investment (hence the Focus decision). Thing is, what else could Broady make that will return decent profits but utilise the existing tech and platforms?

Those figures for the hilux are truly amazing, see if anyone predicted that a few years ago! There must be a fair share of families getting one (dual cab) so you can punt around with kids in the back and move stuff.

Drove past two T6's this week, and they look markedly bigger than the 'lux.

Mazda scores Aussie sales record in April, BT-50 sales up 34%

May 6, 2010 by Matt Brogan

Mazda has set a new April sales record in Australia with its BT-50 light commercial range up 34 per cent on 2009 levels.

The result sees Mazda’s achieve its best ever April result, tallying 6805 new vehicle sales. The Japanese manufacturer has sold 27,919 vehicles in Australia so far this year, an increase of 15.6 per cent on the same time last year.

Leading the charge for the brand’s passenger vehicles, Mazda3 models have finished April as Australia’s best selling small car (YTD). Mazda3 models found 3079 new homes in April, the tally some 23 per cent better than the April 2009 result.

Mazda6 models are also selling well, the mid-size family car up 21.5 per cent on the same time last year. The result sees Mazda6 models retain their title as Australia’s best-selling medium import.

The Mazda2 also enjoyed a good month in April, the run-out model selling 1115 units, a 31.2 per cent increase on last April’s figure.

Mazda SUV sales, including Mazda CX-7 and Mazda CX-9, were also steady in their year-to-date figures, up 115 per cent.

Mazda sold 720 CX-7s in April, up 208 per cent year-to-date. The result sees CX-7 become Australia’s third best-selling vehicle in the compact SUV segment.

The Mazda CX-9 sold 321 examples, up almost 40 per cent year-to-date.

“We could not be any happier with our April result,” said Mazda Australia managing director, Doug Dickson.

“We are proud to be able to boast strong sales across all segments in testimony to Mazda’s on-going popularity with Australian new car buyers.

“When you look at the Mazda range every nameplate offers stylish design, an impressive list of features and great value for money.

“In doing so, we’re obviously meeting the expectations of buyers and we hope to see this continue.”

Good result for Ford, because Hyundai and Mazda were damn close last month...possibly ahead.
It's interesting to note that if you add the 1900 odd sales of Kia to that of Hyundai (Kia being owned by Hyundai) then they would be number three in sales overall!

I think you will find that there is some guy in downtown tokyo that actually owns all the worlds car companies. The industry is so incestuous, you'd have a far better chance of working out the family lineage of someone from salisbury than you would the worlds car industry.

Ford owns 33% of Mazda; that puts them in 2nd, ahead of GM holden.

I know Ford used to own 33% of Mazda, but I am pretty sure that Mazda purchased back 20% of itself in 2008. Thus Ford now own 13% of Mazda. Gives them another 768 Sales, still stuck in third place.

Nope. In late 2008 Ford announced they would sell their controlling stake in Mazda. IIRC Ford sold 20% for like $600 million.

I still think if you are going to combine the sales of the Hilux models to get its total figure (thus the best seller) then the Falcon sedan and Ute and Commodore sedan and ute should be combined.
But if you did that Hilux would be third, and we cant have that, the media really loves everything and anything about Toyota....they cant do any wrong.

But really what is a car. Commodore figures include the sedan and wagon (both made on short wheel base). But pre VE wagon, the wagon was made on the long wheel base, the same as the statesman. However, to allow Holden to claim best sellign car, they didnt add the wagon to the statesman sales, they added it to the commodore sales. The territory, has more in common to a falcon, than a VZ wagon had to a VZ sedan, Yet one figure was combined, and the other seperated.

I'm surprised the Toyota Camry Hybrid is selling so poorly.. I thought it was going to fly out the door with government & fleets wanting to look green..

That would have to be the biggest load of rubbish I've ever read.

Yes, however most fleets these days require a minimum 5 star safety rating while the Camry can only achieve a mediocre 4 star result.

A fridge with a different motor? :P
Buy really, Camry's interiors have improved a bit.
Their exterior is still a little plain and conservative though.

I thought Kelvin Dudd would have creamed his panties over the Hybrid Camry.
The symbolism involved in driving one I thought would have appealed to him especially!

Oooh, it's a conspiracy by Holden to boost Commodore numbers.

Territory has more in common with a Falcon than a VZ wagon does to a VZ sedan? I'd love to know how you came to that conclusion.

Er no. Pre VE wagon and sedan were identical forward of the B pillar. Territory and Falcon only share bodypanels in the engine bay.

I think you missed my point to some degree steve. I was trying to highlight that a VZ wagon had a different chassis and platform than a VZ sedan, and yet when counted in sales figures, they were counted as the same car.

A Territory has a different body to a falcon, but share a common platform.

What makes two cars that dont have the same platform or the same chassis, the same car for sales figures. But two cars that dont share a chassis, but same platform, different cars for sales figures.

FPV - VZ wagon was built on the Long wheel base (statesman) platform

Am I correct in saying that the Camry hybrid sold 396 units this month? If so that is basically what the entire Mondeo range sells per month. Not a bad effort I would have thought. That would be approx 20-25% or 1 in 4-5 of the Camry monthly sales. Again not a bad effort I would have thought.

Daewoo were added into Holdens figures. As far as i Know, every daewoo that comes into australia, has a Holden badge stuck to it.

Altho i didnt see diahatsu in the figures, and from my understanding, Toyota owns them also.

So? Front half of the car is still identical. The changes are in the wheelbase and rear overhang, expressed with different REAR doors and a different REAR floor.

Falcon and Territory arent even on the same platform, let alone a derivative like the classic SWB/LWB Fords/Holdens.

When put like that is sounds ok, but Toyota wanted to sell 10,000 of them a year, which is 833 per month.. So 396 is well short of Toyota's own goal..

But fortunately, in a world hell bent on carbon offsets, Toyota were able to offset these 396 camry Hybrid sales, with 3700 gas guzzling land cruiser, Prado and Kluger sales.
