Very true mate, the innocent do need protecting. And honestly, if the girl had of been of any other nationality, if any of us had of seen this going on, would we have kept walking? I don't think so, well god I hope not. I don't judge people by their colour or religeous beliefs. I work out what they are like as people first before I decide if I want to know them or not.

i wanna kill them if my kids become like them or fall victim to scum like that i will lose the plot. i doubt they would be of euro or middle eastern background because it would have been in the first sentance of the story. i feel bad for the father of the girl and if i ever see these turds in werribee i will bowl them over in the xy, the damage will be worth it because little ****ers like these are popping up everywhere and its turning australia to ****.

I seriously doubt these little fukers will get what they deserve from the so-called 'justice system'. I just hope that the people punish them severely as they are not deserving of the same right and protections as everyone else.
Unfortunately, they have broken the law in the most evil way but the will be protected by the law more vigorously than the victim.

From the footage on ch7 tonite, they definatly werent of middle eastern appearence, a few looked european but no excuses anyways, they need to get a caning for what they done.

I think we all need to take a few deep breaths. I agree that this type of behaviour is totally unnacceptable, I agree that the young people involved need to be punished. However lawlessness is not fixed with lawlessness. If it was to come out in court that these young people were being targeted in the community prior to their case being heard it would be seen as a mitigating circumstance that the community had marginalised them. You might find that satisfying your own sense of injustice leads to the court giving a more leniant sentence. Also some of the things that have been posted here satisfy the legal test of "mens rea" in direct translation from Latin this equates to "guilty mind" or in modern terms "intent".
I think the parents of the girl and the girl herself deserve their day in court, and get to watch those kids squirm and cry as they realise they have just stuffed up their life.
I am not saying dont be angry, I am just saying dont violate individuals outside of the law or you may find yourself in court.

Werribee is a hole. Last night, I took the GTS out for a blat, and there was a bunch of kids no older than 15, standing round infront of a house swearing and yelling at everyone who glanced at them, looked like they had booze with them too.

For them, there is always a reason the poor criminal did it. And it doesnt involve personal responsibility either.

So, if the mechanism to protect society continually fails, what is that society to do if not wish to act outside the laws. The same laws that give a criminal MORE rights than the victim or average citizen.

How does mitigating circumstances come in AFTER the crime?

WTF is society coming to? Soon enough it will be up to the average joe blow to do something about it.

Certainly a despicable act - no one in their right mind would argue against that. But to call for murder, torture etc - it's not appropriate. Turbotaxi, your comments are very apt and well put - thankyou for bringing some clarity into the topic.

We have a system. You cant single out a particular crime to be treated differently, regardless of how emotional it would make some people.

As a system, you need to remove emotion and some elements of judgement. The fact that this case of abuse was so sickening does not mean it should be treated differently to any other similar crime that had different circumstances.

The law needs to be blind to certain things. Emotion is one of these.

Well it's the concept of "checks and balances" isnt it? The system needs 'qualifiers' built into it. Unfortunately such things will be abused and treated like loopholes by fancy lawyers - but they're still important to have.

You need the system to cater for mental disabilities, due process by police etc.

If such checks and balances were removed from the judicial system, there would be outrage on AFF and rightly so.

You would praise and thank this system that "gives a criminal more rights than a victim" if you were wrongly arrested or if one of your actions was taken out of context.

GTJoe - if "the average joe blow" does decide to take a matter into his/her own hands then i hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The police have the right to police - you do not.

Even the most distgusting pieces of scum in this country deserve a fair trial.

Ok a few comments I do agree with but in lot of cases taking punishment into your own hands may feel good at the time but will not help the situation. Being a parent of a special needs child I have to play devils advocate and ask what where the parents doing letting her go and meet with this guy. To alot of special needs kids the world is a place where everybody loves one another and therefore as soon as somebody pays them the slightest of attention they think that person is ok. I know that we cannot wrap them up in a blanket and protect them nor can we be there 24 hours a day but when you have a child like this you tend to be more alert to what and where they are going, in saying that I have to ask the question of why was she allowed to go out on her own. Why was she not with a friend or with a carer. This is what concerns me and will always concern me.

You watch, if this goes any further in the public eye they'll start trying to turn the 'victim' tables....perhaps they're poor, perhaps they have genetic issues, racial issues in the neighbourhood, whatever. Pick an excuse, it'll come out. Or the best one, perhaps she led them on, good chance someone will sprout that one.

My daughters arent special needs. But if ANYBODY did anything to them even well short of this, Id hunt them down and castrate them (if I was thinking), or worse if I let my gut reactions go....

Sorry, but these kids are animals. Regular punishment just doesnt cut it, and wont.

Lets face it, the laws no longer deter criminal activity. They have been watered down so much and muddied by dim witted judges and legal vultures. The old eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth wasn't such a bad idea. Today the silent majority is not heard, only the loud minority. Society as we know it is going down the toilet. You say the girl might have led them on? A girl with mental developmental issues? And I'm sure she condoned them setting her hair on fire? Shoot the turds, make an example of them. Don't defend defective cogs, it's what is polluting the gene pool. And the government want more people to breed?
