for some, its not due to people not knowing how to drive a manual, its more to the fact that they cant get their hands on one. I got my green P's (NSW) and i only drive auto because all the cars, and the one my dad got me, is an auto. When my mate let me drive his manual, i stalled it a few times (afterall, it was my first time), but got the hang of it, after just a couple of minutes driving. im sure once one gets the hang of the clutchs engage point (cant remember what u call it) it'll be a breeze. In the end its not hard to drive a manual.
There are some tho, that dont even know what gears and clutch's are. I think those are the ones that wouldnt now how to drive a manual. But once they do kno the sequence, im sure they too will get the hang of it. |

lol try learning to drive manual on a EA 5 speed with the usual crack in the firewall (makes the clutch very heavy) and the super springy first 15 percent of travel now that was annoying lol got the hang of it though but could have picked a better car to learn manual on lol

got a manual lisence, but in good old WA if you got an auto lisence then you will now be driving them until you get a manual lisence no matter what age. And i do strongly agree with people that being able to drive stick gives you better skills, because what is harder turning a steering n using 2 peddles, or 2 peddles a clutch a gear stick and a steering wheel. One mate has his auto lisence and since he got it i feel like updating my will

Manual for me ..
i taught myself to drive manual in my 1985 tx3 , no powersteering no nothing really . in my personal opinion saying that you dont have access to one isnt a excuse , i dont live with anyone of their P's so i had no one to take me driving ,but i got lessons and thats how i learnt. i believe to is easier to first drive a manual , because your not going to get confused , ive been in the car with my sister driving on her ls a few times and she has only driven a auto , she just flys up to intersections then jams on the brakes , where as in a manual you know when you have to slow down to accomodate your gears . choice over auto and manual , Manual all the way it seems to give me so much more control over everything |

We dont differentiate here in SA. At least, we didnt when i got my licence!! You get a driver's licence, regardless of whether you can drive a manual or not.
Not a big problem, only takes half a day to learn stick from scratch and within a week you're slamming the thing through the gears like a pro. It's not rocket science.

But when you think about it... how may 'manual related deaths' have there been in Australia? i.e when a cocky 'auto' pilot decides to try his hand at the manual?

went the auto=easy option and then bought a manual after my P's but not having driven one in 5 or 6 years has resulted in three dents and a cracked front bar! Skills are up to scratch now though! (hopefully)

Got a manual licence but have owned nothing but autos and hardly even driven anything manual since (10 years). Just the old work ute a few times and the work truck once (what a pain in the butt clutch it has!!).
Would love to own a manual car one day.

I didnt have a manual car to practise in and i only had a few manual lessons before going for my P's. I ended up just going for the auto licence as i wasnt too confident in a manual at that time and didnt want to have to pay to do a re-test if i were to fail.
Regretting it now as i want to convert my car to manual. Anyone in Vic know what the penalty is for driving a manual car on your auto P's?

Manual license for me (us QLD lads actually have to go in a manual to get a manual license)
I learnt in my dads old patrol, loved that car, best clutch in the world, i used to take off from standing in fifth just for fun, bulk torque and clutch pedal feel. Unfortunately when i went for my license the patrol was unavailable so i had to do it in a 90 diahatsu charade, 800cc 3 cyl gutlessness, i think it had less power than my mates 250crf. Never driving a car that gay ever again! But since then i have only ever had autos, the only manuals i have driven recently are my mates cars (the benefits of being designated driver), and man they are so fun, I've actually bought an old 4 speed manual for the torana since then, i'll put it in as soon as i can find a shifter, lol. |

family only has autos, my car is an auto.
i dont see the point in a manual. they just seem like a pain in the ***.. but seriously, what are the advantages of driving a manual? its easier to do burnouts? haha

getting an auto only license in WA means you can only drive auto, its sheer stupidity to not learn in a manual, it might take you an extra lesson, maybe 2 to learn how to shift gears and thats the only difference.

When I got my P plates, I hadn't even driven an auto! My EA was my first auto, and it's pretty obvious what I thought of that when you look at my list of mods. The auto is now taking up precious space in the garage
