I read an article that Toyota in the USA was having alot of serious quality control issues with the avalon. Quite a number of the Toyota faithful were espousing how much they hated the brand now. One possible cause however is that with fuel prices, Toyota have had a big surge in demand and as such have had to cut production times down to meet demand.

I know this is similar to some we have in OZ as experienced with one of my staff's Sportivo V6 that had done 3000klm's before the front left suspension collapsed, 4500klms before the cd player failed, and 4525klm before the windscreen leaked. This and a bunch of other sundry items also don't bode well for rushing toyota. Another employee with a 2.4 altise has had similar sorts of issues, and an exploding dash. Also, the pre delivery paint repairs never quite match that gold colour they do.
Oh well, atleast toyota will always have the faithful ethnicities who buy toyota first, then ask questions about other brands later.

I sometimes have to drive a Camry Sportivo (mother-in-laws car) and there is a lot not to like about it. It is a manual, but I find it pretty gutless, FWD dosn't bother me but the aweful steering responce and noises do, shift is very notchy (just like a ford/holden lol), suspension thumps, dash is SO boring/bland, windows are too high making visibility difficult. I thought it was pretty good on fuel though, comfortable seats, and well everything does tend to work. Make no mistake people buy these cars because of their reliability and resale.

For me if I had a choice I would easily go a Mazda 6 or Honda Accord Euro over the Camry - they have style, power, are more fuel efficient and have more equipment.

I reckon it will get a similar response to the Avalon - nice car, but nothing special. Toyota is lacking the hero cars that Ford and Holden have, which relates to re-sale value IMO. The fans cant always afford the top models - which they would love to own, but they dont mind driving the lesser models instead.

I also would not be suprised if the Aurion lives for about the same time as the avalon, 2-3 years at most.

There is no way in hell that this Camry will get the same response as Avalon.

It will sell well above the Avalon levels. The fleet managers will love this car.

Toyotas in general appeal to money enthusiasts, not motoring enthusiasts. People who want basic reliable transport and don't care how many cylinders they have or which wheels control the power. People who believe everything lawsy says and want whitegoods in the kitchen as well as the garage.
I'm glad these people don't drive Fords!!

Even though I disagree that this Camry is 'boring' I don't know why people here are acting as if it is bad. Toyota is not targeting these Camry's at the type of person at this forum, not by a long shot. They are targeted towards families and older people. Safety, reliability, fuel efficiency and comfort is what those people like, and that is what they get. In those respects, and in general it seems a perfectly good car.

And my favourite Camry would be the '97 - '02 models, though plain (der) I just like their look, 'specially the taillights. Whenever it is new car time, I might abandon Ford and go for a nice Vienta of that era.

Still looks like they cannot get the balance right between wheel size and body size. Looks too big for the wheels it has got - like the current Camry - bloody awful.

I was suprised too. It amazed me that the similarities were so close. I dont think its ugly, but I dont think its that original either.

As more people are noticing, originality is hard to come by from the mainstream car companies. Everyone borrows from everyone else. Again, I don't think this is bad, you get some nice combo's, like the Hyundai Sonata, which I feel took the best design elements from the Accord and Commodore.

Yeah I can see what you are saying. I guess you have manufacturers who are too afraid the general public arent ready for something out of the ordinary. I mean look at the AU. That was a huge leap of faith to expect ozzies to accept the vehicle on face value. yet we have gotten used to it. Sadly though the resale on those vehicles are very very poor to say the least. Horses for courses I guess.

new camry is a 117kw 253NM 2.4L VVTI 4 cyl, avl in 5 auto or 5 man configurations
I find it quite funny how people unquestioningly associate Toyota Camry’s as being fuel efficient. They are actually the least efficient in its class (4 cyl). With a fuel rating of 9.9L/100km I definitely would not call the new Camry efficient (Ford and Holden has 10.9, ford 6 speed I6 has 10.2 and Mitsubishi has 10.8), especially then they can only extract 117kw and 253nm or torque.

Reliability of Toyota vehicles have taken a battering recently. Their recalls have increased several 100% whilst other makes have decreased. These recent recalls started appearing after the recent police investigation of Toyota officials.

Quote:
Toyota officials probed in alleged recall negligence
Yuri Ageyama / Associated Press

TOKYO -- Three Toyota officials are under a criminal investigation on suspicion of professional negligence for allegedly shirking recalls for eight years and not fixing a defect that may have caused an accident, police said Tuesday…………...But Toyota, known worldwide for impeccable quality, has suffered somewhat of an image problem lately because its number of recalls has soared, raising doubts whether the automaker can continue to maintain quality standards as it embarks on the next step of global expansion.

What made me laugh.... Reading thru the latest edition of Wheels (August 06)
Halfway thru the section on the VE, was a 4 page Ad for the new Toyota Camry!
Took up pages 50-53!

Classic positioning!

I don't think the new camry is economical at all.

Not when the new Holden Epica gets 8.9L/100km from a 2.0 Straight 6 Manual and 9.5 from a 2.5 Staright 6 auto

THE CAMRY IS DAMN GAS GUZZLER!! :P

The Camry has a bigger capacity of 2.4 litres, so its bigger than a 2 litre 6, and economy is the same between them, so i'd say the Camry manual is more efficient than the Daewoo. Auto Camry uses roughly the same amount of fuel and is roughly the same size engine, even though its down 2 cylinders so I can't see how you can think the Daewoo is more fuel efficient, its capacity that counts not the number of cylinders.

Well for a Toyota interior, that is amazing, lol. Usually horrible cheap looking ones, but that one is half decent.

Its probably the largest of them too. Toyota will make the Aurion which is the same size and call it a large car, while the same size Camry is a medium, so go figure.

As a person who has seen it up close and under it they can call it what they wont but 1 thing it isn't is a large.

The new Camry is selling well (as expected). There is a three month wait for a new Camry and employees of Toyota Australia have been told that they cannot order a new Camry this side of Christmas. Will be interested to see the vFacts figures when they are released next week.

I have started seeing a number of the new Camry around where i live... and to be honest, they actually dont look too bad for the Cardigan brigade!!!

Still an underpowered family car.... My outlaw's Camry(older 2.2) uses almost as much fuel as my parents Territory!

That can't be right, as all the new Camrys that I see in my area have Victoria Plates on them, and I know that they are all Toyota cars. I drive past the Taren Point HQ of TMC daily, and most of them reside in there.
