Thanks mate, I hope so too. If it doesn't, there are a few other jobs I've applied for that they have called me about and want me to go to an interview, so if all goes according to plan, I'll be employed well before Christmas

Nah, it wasn't that bad, I was only interviewed by two people, one guy asked the questions, while a lady wrote down my responses. They were both quite friendly and did their best to make sure the process wasn't too intimidating.

At this stage, it now comes down to how my references react when they are contacted...

I dont understand the point of references... isn't it illegal to give bad references?

Good luck with the job though TMM, sounds like your doing really well so far. And its good to see that you havent put all your eggs in 1 basket, but hopefully you wont need to fall back on them...

I think so, but that is one of those ones that is impossible to enforce...

Yeah, hopefully not, but if it does fall through, I'm far from beaten, it will just be a minor setback

But if a previous employer gives a very ordinary reference of you, then the previous employer's lack of confidence in you will count against you, even when they aren't negative.

I'm in the process of looking for work in warehousing-storeperson, and despite making the shortlist a few times, having an excellent reference and 11 years and still going with one employer at the age of 31, I haven't nailed one yet from 10 applications. Just a matter of time. Still frustrating though.

Good luck Maddestman - about time something went your way

Sorry to hear that!!!
It really sucks when you get so close and then miss out.

I applied for another job around Christmas last year.
Went to the interview, which was pretty good as far as interviews go, was told I was in the final 3 applicants, and then I heard later they had hired the other 2.
One of those people apparently quit 2 weeks later, and then they re-advertised the job.
Despite them saying it had taken several months for them to find anyone suitable.

Troy, chin up mate. I truly believe that things happen for a reason. Maybe you not getting this job opens the door to another. Good luck with finding something else and since they're keeping your details on their files, keep checking to see if any other openings are offered by them. The fact that you've already done interviews with them will be an advantage for you.

I would be contacting them and asking them to give you some feedback on the interview process so you may learn from the experience!

Bad luck mate, but keep on kicking down doors

True, but I'd rather get an email like that rather then no response, which is what I often get.

True, it was at least good practice for interviews, and knowing I was able to get that far was a huge boost to my confidance. I'm confidant I'll be employed before christmas!

Good idea mate, thanks, I will.

Thanks everyone for everything you've said in this thread, it's good to know so many people are hoping things will go my way soon. I can't express in words how much help you've all been, and I can't wait for the day when I'll be able to write that I got the job and tell you all about it!

I was gonna wait until I read that you'd got the job before saying anything.

That's a damn shame really. Reading this, I thought you had it in the bag.

Remember, when one door closes, another opens. Good luck, you'll get something soon.

Sorry to thread mine, but I've tried about a dozen times to get some sort of answer as to why I didn't get the job, as suggested earlier in this thread, via various comminication methods, and I have not heard anything back from them. This is really fustrating, because I got so close to getting the job, and would like to know exactly why they didn't choose me in the end.

Anybody got any ideas, or should I just forget it and chalk it down as their loss?

Oh and BTW, anybody know of any jobs going in Melbourne that I could apply for? With the baby now on it's way, I REALLY need to get a job, and despite applying for at least 5 jobs every day that I have found on seek.com.au I have only received a total of 2(!!) responses back, both being "thanks, but no thanks".

Having been in that situation once before (wanting to know why i didnt get it), i found it really difficult to get anything out of them too - once they knock you back for the job, they don't really want to know you.
If you can assess your application and interviews etc yourself you can usually get more out of it than you could get from them anyway.
Re the jobs, only advice i can give is just write letters. Pick out a company you think would be good to work for, do a bit of homework and send 'em a letter with your resume. Make it stand out a bit to be different from all the other ones they get, and see how you go. Ive done ok out of doing it that way for a while.

Good idea, thanks mate, it's certainly worth a try.

I'd really love to know why I didn't get that job, after they'd got me to go to so many interviews, and even got me to listen in on some calls, but I guess I might never know :(

I know the feeling. Sometimes you'll go through the interview thinking "this job is mine, ive got it in the bag" and feeling very confident and relaxed and happy, and then you get the call you don't want the day after. Happened to me a few times.
The way I look at it its all learning experience (a little different for me as Im 19) but it can get to you.
The best advice my dear gf has given me (she puts up with a lot ) on the subject, and she is right, is to simply look at what you enjoy and go from there. What I did was actually sit down with a piece of paper and write down everything I enjoy doing, and everything I wanted to learn how to do etc. From there, I went through one of the TAFE guides that tell you what job requires what etc, and picked out some jobs that would put me in a position to be doing those things. It certainly helps to narrow down what you wanna have a go at, and saves you the wasted time of applying for things that you find you're not really keen on doing.

Yeah, it's even worse when they don't even have the decency to call you, and let you know via EMAIL that you didn't get the job. You're waiting for a phone call that never comes, you check your email, and there it is, the reason your phone hasn't rang like you expected it to.

Yes, a learning experience, and it is only getting to me because since then, I havn't even made it to an interview, despite applying for more jobs then I want to remember applying for. And now with the baby on the way, there are so many things we need to get, there is so much that is going to change, the pressure is on, and I can't seem to manage to get past the first hurdle, no matter how hard I try.

I've sat down and worked out what I like doing (and, just as importantly, what I DON'T like doing), what my skills are, and what I'd like to learn how to do, and yes, I agree, that is great advice for anybody looking for work.

So if anybody knows of any work going in Melbourne, please let me know, I'm only too happy to provide my skills, qualifications, experience, etc. if need be.

Hi troy,
An old saying I have used many times for you to think about.

As a person thinks so are they
You have the power to choose what you think.

Now this might seem like what the?

But what I’m saying is you must think like you not only you can get a job but you will get the job.

This positive thought will then show through and you will become successful in your endeavors.

The second thing I put to you is by just applying to seek.com and hoping this will sort the issues is probably a half measure in being positive.

What you could do is look at all jobs you can apply for and hit the campaign trail, get out there and do the cold calls on all of these businesses as a secondary option, and then go back and do the rounds again.

I will come back to how important a positive mind set is with an old example.

Many years ago I bought 5 vending machines and had one or two placed into stores ( not sure from memory now ) but I do know that I set out for the day and before leaving I said to my wife that I could be late home as I was not coming home until all machines were placed into stores.

Now this to me didn’t mean that I would go out and give it a go, it meant exactly what I said, the short end of the story was I did get home late but I had placed all machines.

I put it to you should you adopt the same / similar line of thinking ( and I don’t mean not go home at night ) but I will find work within 4 weeks and each day you get up, re confirm your intentions then get out there and work hard at it that you will indeed get the results.

Another common mistake I see many people make is to sell them selves short and by this they undervalue their worth. And they only select jobs in the lower pay brackets; this is where you will find most of the competition so try looking higher up the ladder, if as above you believe you can supply the goods better than others then why not.

I was approached many years ago to work for a company and they offered me 50K, my response was no I need 75K min or I’m happy where I am. I was paid the 75K.

More recently, but still a few years back I was offered higher than the 75K and my response was no I need XYZ + this + that, and yes I got it, you need to learn to think like this and it takes time but it can be done by anyone so why not you and yes it will take many years to get it right, if you ever do. I know I’m far from perfect and will never get it right but I also accept that I can and will make mistakes, but I also see that the only way you don’t make mistakes is to do nothing.

I won’t wish you good luck as that in my view is for people treading the safety line; instead I say if it is to be, your destiny is in your hands, not those here on the forums or anywhere and only you have the power to change this.

Regards
Pete

Have you tried and employment agencie ? I reccommend Tessa (sp) that's who we get our casuals through when we need an extra helper, sign up with them and they'll find you a job almost instantly good rate of pay too. There's plenty of jobs out there, just don't be soo fussy about what you wanna do, you can allways keep looking for that ideal job while you do something you don't enjoy, such as labouring or working in a factory.

But what I’m saying is you must think like you not only you can get a job but you will get the job.

This positive thought will then show through and you will become successful in your endeavors.

The second thing I put to you is by just applying to seek.com and hoping this will sort the issues is probably a half measure in being positive.
Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to write all that mate, I appreciate the thought that went into it. Don't worry, it didn't seem like "what the" to me at all, made perfect sense to me. I had that attitude during the interview process with "Just Car", and I had it for weeks after I received that email saying I hadn't got the job, but as time has gone on, it's become more and more difficult to stay so positive.

Seek.com.au is where I found the "Just Car" position, which is why I have continued to visit there every day, searching through the advertised positions.

The other obstacle is that I know I am up against other applicants with more qualifications and experience, so I've got to try and find a way of making myself stand out from the crowd.

Cheers mate, it may not seem like I have taken aboard what you have said, but believe me I have. I now just have to work out the best plan of attack, and work on becoming more positive.

I have indeed mate, thanks for the idea. I think the limiting factors that I have to find a way around are that I am basically unskilled (in the eyes of employers, I do have skills of course, but I don't have qualifications), and I have a medical condition that prevents me from doing some kinds of work (insulin dependant diabetes) and means I have to have regular breaks, meals and cannot do as much hard physical labour as most people because of the effect this has on the requirements for insulin and food.

One of the reasons I no longer work for Coles Express/Shell is that my health was suffering in a big way because they would not let me take any breaks and so I had trouble working my meals and insulin around my hours, often having no choice but to have my insulin several hours late, or even having to wait until the end of my shift before having my insulin and eating, which is dangerous, possibly even life threatening to me.

That's one of the reasons I thought working in a call centre would be a good option.

Troy can you start your own business e.g lawnmowing all you need is a mower a whipper snipper and basic gardening tools...the beauty of this one is if they pay by cash you don't tell the ato...you work your own hours stop/start when you want so should not interfere with your meds/meals.

Just a thought sport,think about.
