G'day all.. Today I made an offer on a 2008 Liquid Silver FG XR6 with , get this , 65 thousand kilometres only on the clock..Literally immaculate going by 15-16 dealer photos they sent me , one owner since new full service history, traded on a 2015 FGX. asking.$13,500 for it..I asked $3500 for my BA Fairmont Ghia and there's a slight chance they may accept...Maybe the XR is a bit overpriced for nearly 8 years old but 'like new' is a fair description going by the photos..one tiny 50mm scratch on the rear bumper according to the consultant..will look for myself in the next couple of days hopefully..Not stupid. I know they're considering losing a grand on mine to gain at least that on the XR 6....Might be different when I see and drive it but until then...nice thoughts..

Be interesting if they accept, doesnt sound like it will be very lucrative for them on the changeover as they will probably end up wholesaling your car for not much. If you get it, it sound like a great deal.

In hindsight should of looked at trading the ute on a newer one at 50,000km as I don't think I would if been worse off by keeping the current one as cars seem to be worth nothing once they start to head to 100k km.

Thing is it's not a good thing for the world to have everyone buying new things all the time.

Or maybe next time get a auto diesel 4x4 dual cab which keep their value nearly forever
G'day again .. I have an AU Series ll Futura that is nothing special to look at however as crazy as this may sound it's the only car I have no intention of getting rid of. It is just a lovely old daily drive but pretty much worthless Trade in or Private sale to anybody but me..Who said cars aren't emotive ?...Kind of like a comfy old pair of shoes or a ratty old pair of jeans..just feels right..The SOHC engine is a beauty...Just something about it , not that any ford inline 6 isn't pretty darn good..She needs a paint job..clear won't come up that good..One day she might just get it too..See what I mean..would cost more to paint her than what she's worth but that's how is is for us Ford Falcon fans..cheers again...Rod

I used to have an AUII Fairmont, probably the best car I ever owned - well up there with the FGII Ute.

Not sure if they'll be 100% keen to honour the over the phone offer to accept $3500 for mine..Needs the CD stacker unjammed , there's 75mm of clearcoat peeling on the spoiler , nowhere else though , and there's a hint of the headlining sag near the rear view mirror..and the paint needs a proper polish. It'll be a wholesale yard jobbie for sure. I think there is plenty to move on the XR6 otherwise they wouldn't have conditionally agreed to a ten grand or very close thereabouts changeover..but I'm going to really have to be totally impressed with the XR once I test drive it anyway.Nothing else will do..Cheers...

Just hope that they stand by it and it is not to just get you in there then offer you $1500. I had one mob do that a few years back. Just bit the bullet and took it as I really wanted the car I was looking at, once I drove out of the yard I forgot about it as I was wrapped the one I bought and never regretted it.

Hello,

Most Cars are not an investment. They are a " Tool " and depreciate. If you buy a fancy one, it will loose more and cost more to keep running. Nealy any old Car that is original will eventually become valuable though. They now last far longer than once, so there are many old ones around because a shiny new one is what most want. Supply and demand. If you dont like it, then you will have to walk. A house is a better investment, but it wont take you places.

I really could not care about depreciation, if you are going to keep a vehicle for any length of time,it does not even come into the equation for me.

Didn't work for Chrysler... CL Drifter, AP series Valiant, C series Valiant etc. The only people prepared to pay big dollars are fans/collectors/clubbies who must have a particular vehicle—regardless of its cost. And it has to be a reasonable resto or concours ready. Nobody would ever buy one of these older vehicles—of any make—as a daily driver. So their prices—broadly speaking—won't increase much, because the demand is from only a minuscule percentage of the buying public.

I bought a new 186S XR auto Holden for $2550 way back when, and I can still buy a registered, roadworthy example today for $5K to $7K. Not much appreciation there in 50 years.

I had a brand new CM Valiant top of the range, under dash air conditioner vynal roof and it was quite funny I had a Toyota Carona to trade in which was only 18 months old the Valiant was $8700 and it was at Skipper Mitsibishi in Perth and they gave me $6000 trade in and I only paid $6300 for it but that was how hard they were pushing to get rid of the last Valiants, I only kept it for about 18 months and traded it in on a Toyota Landcruiser and got $6000 trade in at Kalamunda Toyota in Perth, you wouldn't get deals like that today as there is no competition between new car dealers as over here in Perth they're all owned by just a couple of companies.

G'day ..You could be right..I contacted the ford dealership on Friday to see if I could look at the car on the weekend.."I'll give you a ring back before the end of the day" was the message via email..I waited until 6pm and no call ..rang them and no-one was there. Got them by phone Saturday morning and was told that I'd have to wait til Monday to talk to the sales consultant as she was on her days off..but that they'd get her to ring me at work Monday morning..Either she's regretting offering me $3500 Trade in over the phone last week or maybe it's a ploy to get an extra grand out of me first once I see the one owner stunning low kms XR6 . .If it is it ain't gunna work because ten grand and my car is all I can genuinely afford..We'll see what she says tomorrow if she ends up ringing me back..Otherwise I'll wait until another one comes along in the future..Cheers Rod..

I tried to get a trade in on my old model, the rear end is shot, the front has dropped down, it has more noises and rattles than I know what to do with, leaks continuously, vary rarely travels in a straight line, costs more and more every day to run, any level of comfort has been long gone and that's just for my wife, buggered if I know what I will get for the car.

G'day...Some places will offer $2000 minimum trade and the car doesn't even need to be running in some cases I believe..With my Fairmont , thanks to the guy's advice on here via various on line car valuation sites , I know this much..My car is worth nothing less than $1600 if it was in ****** condition and as a trade in , about $3200 in really good condition..That is my car or very close to it..Once you let the sales consultant you're on top of such info , you'd have to be in a better position..As a private sale you get more but it could sit in your yard or nature strip for months before it sells..Cheers Rod..

Buddy was having a bit of a joke with the trouble n strife, and I would not swap her out for quids.

On the flip side I see people here saying about the depreciation and then scrabbling over a few dollars to just turn around and invest in another car that will do exactly the same thing down the track.

Nothing new with that as I bet most everybody here has been through that lesson in life.

For me if I really wanted to stop that cycle I would invest in some just good old school clean car that maybe needed some general tidy up work and if possible I would look to buy it under its worth ( you make money when you buy something not sell it ) then I would keep it and just enjoy driving it around, spend a few hours here and there tidying it up some more, then flip it out down the line.

Not looking to make big dollars on it but you should be able to stop the depreciation loss of buying the latest and greatest, keeping that money in your sky rocket and maybe making a few dollars by buying under value and giving it a tidy up. Then rinse and repeat.

I've got a 01 XR6 ute with 54k on the clock. One dealer said max he'll give me is $1k. So I said I'd rather leave it to rust in the back yard. Plenty of other car yards around to spend my money in.

You would be damned lucky to get very much for an older worn model.I had one that was only 25 and in pretty good shape and finished up giving it away one Sat afternoon

Hello,

Any hints about the dealer ? I remember when the GF wanted to buy a Falcon, a VT with 12 months Rego was worth only the Rego, 1 K on a 7 or 8 thousand Car. No deal. We got a refund on the Rego and sold it for $500 as a parts Car. There is always demand for good Utes, even if you parted it out you would go close to double the Trade in offered aside from the Rego refund.

There comes a point when cars are worth nothing to dealers.

Not sure a BA 6 cyl can be described as ICONIC...

G'day ..When I use the term 'iconic' I mean it as a general description of the SOHC and DOHC 4.0 litre Ford inline 6 engine , not necessarily just in the BA...sorry about my poor wording...This engine in a few years when it ain't around anymore is DEFINITELY going to be fondly remembered ..Especially when the expensive repair bills start occurring on the overseas designed Ford mills just like the inferior 4.0 litre .USA .V6 crap is now in early Explorers etc. You've had a dodgey built on Monday morning or Friday afternoon motor if you get nothing less than 4-500,000 clicks out of it...cheers Rod..

Me thinks this a con job, surely another sales person would gladly show you the car straight away anticipating for another sale from dealer on the day.

My gf got $100 trade in when she got her new car. Was just happy to have it taken away.

I don't think trade ins are ever going to be worth doing beyond the convenience of driving in one car and driving out the other, and all the paperwork done at once.

I can't help but think that if they're not going to offer you much at all, don't bother trading in, just put it on the market privately. Someone will want a cheap car, even if it is a 6.

Was given $2k trade-in for a 2003 BA 5.4 sadly that's all they're worth. No way the dealer would keep it on the lot despite it only having 100,000 on the clock. Just got to be realistic, it's a 13 year old car.
That's when buying a $54k new XR8 with cold hard cash...well bank cheque.

Dealers don't want cash either, they're more interested in ripping you off with a finance plan. I nearly walked when they continued with the finance hard sell. Why the hell would I consider that with cash in hand?

It is all it is worth to a dealer as a trade in price - try buying one for 2k with that mileage.
