Hey Outback, the only reason the XU-1 beat Moff in 1972 was because it was a wet race. You try driving around Bathurst with 380 hp on 15"x7" aquaplanes!!!!!!!!
Torana being lighter and less powerful was much easier to punt on the day. In a dry race good luck.
What about A9X Torries, they're not overrated are they...............

1872 was modified production too... 1971 was the last year of true production based racing.

Fastest four door production sedan i can find is a Maybach 57S at 276km/h.
Theres a Brabus Benz thats quicker but not a production model.
Most other cars are speed limited.

Funny enough that year Moffat had the fastest lap and was on pole.

If the XU-1 was so quick (by the trolls own grading system), it lost the XA the following year.

I thought it was the 4dr bentley 305km/h

irrelevant anyways we can't afford one.

And the current crop of Aussie cars if not all cars are limited in top speed

mine for example 230km/h limited. Even my old magna awd would do a very easy 214km/h limited with only 150kw ( this is a heavy automatic all wheel drive car )

Based on basic calculations I've made un limited the g6et would easily do 280km/h

didn't that hsv ute do 286km/h stock in that outback test?

Yes it was the last one that was not gonna be limited anymore. And now holds the record.

That's Rubbish... the claim for "Fastest 4 door sedan in the world" was based solely on its top speed, then to a lesser extent lap times.
The GTHO H3 was built as a circuit race car, not a drag racer..
FSV wouldnt have given a toss about what it did over the 1/4, what it did around bathurst was what it was designed for.

I've thought for years it was all about the 14.1s qtr mile, which obliterated anything else with four doors on the planet. Ta

Its got nothing to do with 1/4 times, these cars were built to be driven and raced on circuits. They're set-up totally wrong if they were trying to achieve good 1/4 times.
"Fastest" means overall speed, "quickest" means elapsed time over a given distance...

It was based on top speed. From memory, somewhere between 228 to 234 kmh, which was proven by Wheels at the time to be faster than any other 4 door at the time, Jags, Mercs, Astons etc.

No one really bothered with fast 4 doors at the time, everything truly fast was 2 door.

How things have changed. Now every man and his dog is making a fast 4 door. C63, E63, S65, Flying Spur, Panamera, Rapide, RS6 etc.

Does it matter? Possibly both?

Just read and enjoy: http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au...lcon_xy_gt.htm

The OP got answered at post #4, perhaps it should've stopped there.

What was being measured when we're talking about fastest though? Fastest over a quarter mile? Fastest top speed?

I think the 4 door qualifier was a bit of a cop out myself. Beaten by the E49 down the quarter but it has 2 less doors, so..

AGAIN.. incase you havent been following it was TOP SPEED...

The E49 was a 1972 model, not 1971, and it was 200kgs lighter than the 1971 GTHO PH3...

The only verified 1/4mile time for the P3 is with the Bathurst diff, and I dont even think it was down an actual 1/4mile track.
Considering the Boss 351 Mustangs ran 13.Xsec quarters at around 104mph, that gives you an indication of what a properly setup and driven P3 should run (since they basically had the same drivetrain) They were of similar weight too

I have heard of an E49 running 13.9s @ 100mph or so.

It also had 2 less cyls and 1.5l less capacity

yet according to the testing back in the day was faster to 100mph by 0.3 of a second

Also let's not forget Chrysler was the red headed cousin they didn't have the budget of ford.

It did have a lower top speed than the GT. And everyone knows chargers aren't fantastic handlers and don't have the best rear end grip in a straight line either.
