Anyway the girl I was working with said:
"That sounds so good, Subaru's are the best and they sound the best."
I could not believe that was her idea of the best sounding car, idling along it sounded like a $15/hour charter boat putting towards a jetty. When the engine was given anything more it sounded like a vacuum cleaner sucking out the inside of an oil drum.

Then the guy came in and they talked about how amazing attaching an industrial coffee tin to the back of his car sounded. They then went onto say how bad all the V8 Falcon's and Commodore's sounded and how they sound like the engine is falling apart. This guy then said (this is a near perfect quote)
"...yeah I'm in love with the sound it makes (his car), it puts Lambo's and Ferrari's to shame. I drive next to them all the time and it sounds sooooo much better..."
My jaw hit the floor at that point as they proceeded to nod in agreement. I was literally paralysed by stupidity. All knowledge of car and sound went straight down the flusher.

However I could be very wrong, maybe this is the best sounding car now and I'm just completely out of touch.

So I'd like everyone to enlighten me and all else as to what you think is the definitive greatest sounding car. Video files and sound clips are encouraged.
Did the blokes name have two ""O""s an m and an h in it ?

Its hard to say, as there are many unique ones. I dont like the high revving mosquito sounds of the Lambos or Ferrari's.
My favourites would be:
V8 - VN/P SS stroked. Sorry, but they rape the Fords for sound, just sound so freaking nice.
4cyl - 2L EJ20 from the WRX, sounds wicked and very unique.
6cyl - 2jz-GTe Supra with a HKS T51r

Well guy's there are a few great sounding cars that I could name, and there are some great candidates mentioned in this thread.

I would say the Aston Martin DB9 would be up there.

Then there is this thing, the mother of all holy sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnFA70k1mlI

Last year they were using C63/SL63's with "modified" zorsts but they've now switched to the SLS.

Here's a nice vid of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alkEM0u0tSU

And here's the SLS, sounds like they didn't change the stock exhaust this time

Apparently, the guys at F1 thought these cars were not loud enough from the factory so they decided to make them a little bit louder...enjoy.

keeping it australian there is something special about how an unrestored ph2 or 3 with original exhaust systems sound! b4 the ph1 owners get upset havent heard a low mile unrestored one...yet. ive also been lucky enuf to hear mr watsons latest motor in his gold xr. the thing made me feel weak at the knees on a straight stretch of road between kadina and moonta and i wasnt going slow in a stock shaker... his car wasnt even tuned!

i love the old lumpy cam V8's, i love those big merc's i even love some of the hyper cars etc etc

But i struggle to get over a home grown Supercharged 5.0 Litre Coyote Falcon......I admit thats it isnt the very best sound out there but its definately one of the best off the shelf engine sounds out there!

http://video.caradvice.com.au/fpv-gtp-review/

Oh and i respect that the supercharger whine isnt everyones cup of tea but i love it!

Default Daimler 250 and AMG E63

Guy around the corner has a current AMG E63 and has to go uphill and downhill past my place man what a noise should hear it on the overrun downhill
can always here it coming

Loved the Audi R8 v8 till I heard the Benz

The triumph Stag V8 used to have pretty good note for a standard car, so did the Daimler 250 V8 manual (1967 i think)I used to service as young bloke both these were not real loud but just beautiful rumblers

Still have a soft spot for an old corolla with a hotdog out the back

For a factory car the AMG E63 Merc would be hard to beat.

Gary Myers mustang on the burn out pad is one of the sweetest sounding engines out there bar none...

WRX are probably the best sounding fours out there

But a six with an exhaust is probably the worst noise out there, same with most fours, sound like fart cannons.

I'm sensing i might get some grief for it but IMHO, Ferraris sound wack!

I work in an industrial area with lots of high end car garages just around the corner and at leats once a fortnight, some exotic monster roars past. And Ferraris are I'm sorry to say, the least impressive. I'd prefer a lumpy cammed 5.4 BOSS or LS3 over the vacuum cleaner noise they make (from F430's to testarossa's).

Also I believe to put all nice- sounding cars in the one category is unfair to what their marquee might be trying to achieve (e.g luxury performance cars want the muted growl sound over the loud ostentatious noise of 'cheaper' v8s)

My preference would be as follows (all stock factory options only):

Exotic Supercars: Lambhorgini Murcielago
Luxury Performance: Maserati Granturismo Vs a close second Bentley Continental GT
Big blocks over 100K: Ford Mustang GT Supersnake (Mental!!)
Big Blocks under 100K: FPV S/c GT
Forced Induction Cars under 100k: FPV F6/ SC GT
OLD School Muscle: 67 Shelby GT Mustang Fastback 'Eleanor'
