Yeah, they seem to spend the dollars on the short-term things that win them the next election, rather than doing things for the long term which will benefit us 10-20yrs down the track, and possibly lose votes for spending millions at the time on something for a while away.

Same thing has happened with decisions about water storages etc too

Very shallow mate, very shallow.

It doesn't look like a high speed impact to me, IMO, it looks like it could have been as slow as 60k's when it hit.

if the car had been doing a lower speed, say 60 or 80, would not evasive action be in evidence? skid marks perhaps, or evidenced by a side on impact?

I don't know, if it was a high speed impact wouldn't the the car have gone further in and not had the RHR C Pillar and door relatively unscathed?

The car can't exactly go past the diff on the truck, hence it would not have gone further in, even at high speed.

A few years ago there was a nasty collision with a WRX driving under a truck in Keysborough, he was doing about 120 at the time (speedo was stuck post collision) and it only went in halfway aswell.

Received a 'phone call @ 9.30 last night with some bad news.
The front seat passenger is the husband of my mates niece, i knew him very well.
Whats eating me inside, apart from the initial shock of finding out, is that he leaves a wife and three children, the youngest being 12 weeks old.
Hardly slept at all last night, just thinking about it.

That's terrible news, it's never good when children are left behind, especially infants.

My symphathies to all involved to all involved in this horrific accident, but the P Plate laws look good to the general public, have you driven one of these 4 cylinder cars lately? Some of them go like rockets, (well as far as 4 cyl can go) and are quite capable of reaching 180kms. They are a completely different vehicle to the likes of the old Datsun 180B.

When will these young blokes learn?? Do it on a race track, not public roads. Join a car club that has organized motorsport events.

The heartache suffered by all involved is just not worth it.

My condolences to all involved, may they RIP. It ends a horror weekend on Vics roads and one can only hope for the best leading into the 'silly' season.

I live within 5 mins of the accident site and this is the 4th or 5th fatal accident on that stretch of road since the speed limit on the westgate bridge was lowered to 80km.
I've lived in the inner west for nearly 10 years now and can't really recall any major accidents on the bridge before the limit was decreased and cameras were put on the bridge. I see it all the time where the 'fast' lane is slowed coming past Willy rd outbound and then the speedsters unwind towards Millers rd. They then need to hit the picks to pull up for the cameras @ Millers RD overpass. A very dangerous piece of road.

I'm also sad to say that an accident like this backs up my firm belief in passenger restriction on P-platers. Its a terrible waste of young lives that might have been saved. I hope the govt pulls their finger out and helps to preserve our youth on the roads.

We lost 3 in a car v's B-Double in Rockingham over the weekend. :(

Sadly, one of the death was an unrestrained 6 month old.
4 survived. (yes thats right, 7 people in one VP sedan)

I would strongly suggest this accident was due to inexperience (18 year old driver) and not "street racing" or "speeding" as I doubt that they were travelling any great deal over the posted limit.

It's very sad to see this, but as long as you have mates egging you on in the car (especially after just getting your licence), you'll have accidents.

The previous three fatalities in this same spot of freeway involved Semi Trailers / Tankers.

Not an accident, but last night I went to the local supermarket at about dinner time to get some stuff, with my 10 year old son.

We are walking over towards the front of the shop and before we knew it, a white VN Commodore, with a P plate and 5 young blokes scream past us IN the car park. They had swung in off the road and just didnt slow down - maintained their speed coming into the car park by swinging right across the entrance. Then they swung at that speed into a car park near my car.

They nearly took us out, and they thought it was funny. Now, if we had been a metre or two further across, we would have been cleaned up and there wouldnt have been a thing anyone could have done about it.

Usually there are elderly people crossing the car park there to get to the chemist and the shops, and very often, parents and kids. Its very busy and those guys were lucky.

When we were in the shops, the 5 of them were swaggering around thinking they were dead set legends, and saw us and they must have remembered me and my son giving them the finger as they went past... they started laughing again but when I started walking towards them to have a go, they took off.

Incidentally, the VN was a bucket of poo, had really worn tyres and looked like it handled like a pig - old shockers? Those 5 kids in that thing makes it a death trap.

How would they have felt if they HAD killed someone? Would they even be able to comprehend the feeling of getting out of their car after hitting someone, and seeing a squashed kid or something? Unfortuntely, no. They wont understand until they experience it - and its too late for them, and the people they hit.

Im sorry but the Mt Barker police who love to sit all around the place with speed cameras in ridiculously safe areas on the roads in the district should be more focussed on knocking some sense into these young idiots driving their shitboxes in such stupid ways around places that are so dangerous.

These guys are not the only ones. There are many instances where I have seen similar behaviour from a car load of young fellas/girls in some kind of old shitbox.

Sorry, rant over...

Do you think the driver of this car would care about passenger restrictions/power restrictions/curfews etc, if he was willing to drive at more than 60 over the limit?

They didn't make it that far. They went from the right lane across all the lanes and into the tree on the fence line about 500m short of the millers Rd offramp.

Makes you wonder how the emergency crews live with it every day.

My father was a Sydney towie in the late 60s and the beginning of the 70s, and some of the things he has described over the years would make most people physically ill just at the thought of such carnage.

He was also a NSW motorcycle cop before that.....he's seen some horrible stuff.

Just finished reading the Herald Sun's report on this utterly tragic waste of 4 young lives.
It was reported that friends and family turned up to the scene not long after it occurred. As a father of a 19 yr old girl & almost 18 yr old boy, the bottom nearly fell out of my stomach imagining the absolute terror any parent would feel in actually witnessing a scene like this!
My God...The suffering those poor poor parents will be going through right now!!!!!
PLEASE guys take notice of THIS!
THINK ABOUT THIS next time your about to take that silly, impatient, unnecessary move!
My heartfelt thoughts to those that this tragedy has impacted on.
Think about THEIR now bloody, pointless, wasted Christmas!

This is heading way too far off-topic.

Lets put this p-plate bashing and political bashing aside for one thread....

Regardless the cause, a death has cost/caused 4+ families a not so happy merry Xmas.

So then Have a safe Christmas and watch the commercials and dont turn a blind eye to the fact....

SPEED KILLS!

And if you do then dont involve others to have those people suffer together with a one car involvement with a truck. That truck could of had been YOU or your relative. If ya dont speed then wipe of 5 ,that is Kms- not 5 abiding by the law and another doing 180 kms an hour heading for the 6 o clock news!

To the Victoria Police and the TAC thanks to ALL members and collegues and may your Christmas be a joyous one. CCQ do you read!

As a mum of an 18 year old son it terrifies me that if he was to be in a car with a mate being silly, would he be sensible enough to tell him to stop or demand to be let out? I can only hope so.

My heart really goes out to all those young ones families and friends. There is never a good time of year to lose someone especially if it could have been prevented somehow :

RIP :
