80's and digi cams didnt mix real well. Boxes somewhere though, lol.

Howards Astils Falc was very nice - I liked the 1st. Owens Webbs was also sweet. Gary Myers original Black Stang before it was tubbed etc. I also remember a blue XY at the nats which was a sight in the burnouts, cant remember the name though, very nice.

Oh and that Green XD/XE with the destroked Clevo and trumpets.

How about the blown big block chev powered Bronco? Crazy car(?). And hands up anyone who actually saw in person Rick Dobbertins(sp) Ponticac J2000 at the first Summer Nats.

I've got a heap of 80's street machine mags, and nearly all the 90's ones, I'll scan a few pics of the above-mentioned cars tomorrow.

what year was the one with the red camaro on the cover? what year camaro?

As I was born in 1980 the main one that has stuck in my mind is BLOBAK. Seeing that engine detailed to perfection and just the overall presentation of the car was awesome, and this is coming from a 1 eyed FORD MAN.

Cheers Corey

I lined up in the hot sun for about 2 hours to compete in the Go-to-whoa one year and got tenth then Cavacini just pushed in and ran his car and knocked me out to eleventh. Give him his due, he could drive the car, a lot of the other cars were Trailer Queens and that was the first (and possibly the last) day they had been driven in anger.

I remember Victor Bray in his original mat black '57 Chev (it may of still been street registered then?) doing burnouts on the main road of Natex before the burnout strip was built.

There was a rumour that John Peterson was building a replica Zepher to compete in the Summernats again.

Slightly off topic (OK,. a fair bit OT!) but speaking of 80s how good is TV tonight. Just watched Back To The Future and now I'm watching Blues Brothers. Haven't seen BB since the 80s, ahh the memories! py:

It's no rumour it's a fact. He has a new shell and the old running gear out of the Black one still in his shed. He was trying to by the original Black one back but the guy who owns it wont budge with it. I have very fond memories of that car, and many miles traveled in it to one event after another. I look forward to the new one. Bj

Too right I remember that Bronco! Easternats ,Wagga Wagga "88" It had an injected BDS blower set up b/B chev , was just stunning in presantaion and was doing demo 4 wheel burnouts chained to a tree at the startline for the Go to whao . Was very inpressive till the transfer case blew . I also remember watching Barry from Hume Performance doing burnouts that day in his White with green and yellow graphics Blown B/B , Masive tubb's and barred out HQ coupe! It was built to challenge some XJS12 Jag fag who proclaimed in street machine , his twin turboed V12 jag was the finnest performance car in the land! He never did rise to the challence of Barry and his HQ !

That was Garry Walker I think that owned the Jag?

Another tough car from the Eighties was Wayne Pagel's blown, black and tubbed HT Monaro GAS69.

A few years befor that when Howard Astills Rock was maroon and ultra detailed . I loved that car better than when it was blue!

I can remember "4MYLYN" i think the builder quoted on spending 3 months on each rear quarter panel.

My favourite was the red xy with no stripes ,it had slightly flared guards and low as ,i think it won smoty one year

Was there with the likes of Greg Carlson in his pro street VK commodore and wayne pagels pro street monaro. The detail on it was unbelievable particular the roll cage. He wanted the cage to look like it flowed from 1 piece to the next. There was no visible sign of welds. Was even better seeing it cruise down Northbourne Ave as the lead car in the cruise. Haven't been back to summernats. Been trying to go for the last 5 years but definitely going for the 20th anniversary in 07.

How many members from here going?

Jeeze , there are so many great cars from the 80's , it is hard to remember one with out remembering others ! Frank Picolo built what is probly my most favourite car of all time ! His XB GT was Orange , Blown and electronically injected , had HUGE rear tyres , slammed , polished B45 simmons and was just so detailed and smooth everywhere you looked . I just love that car ! Street machine Gave that car away too ! HQ 4 U was also one of the greatest 80's streetmachines . Built By Streetmachine magazine It was very before its time , and I think the start of magazine give away's in Aus. The Castrol Coupe was buily by Kev Bartlet and was also worthy of a mention! One HO To Go was awsome as well !

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm......... So many great car , So little time !

Was looking through an old mag on the thinking chair recently, I noticed that the feature cars were seen as powerfull when they had in excess of 180rwhp.... times have changed.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a green 351 powered Mrk2 Escort that was in an 80's Street Machine issue. I have quite a few old issues still, but can't find that one... Would love to take another look at it, if anyone knows what issue I need??

Although this thread is an oldie - Mark from MD conversions in Blacktown built the clevo escort. Would be very late 80's or early 90's;

Prior to the escort, he built a couple of blown XT GT's.

Loved those blown XT's. Would love a similar car now.
A mate is building a HT four door 80's style, Original Centerlines, mini tubbs and front runners, square letterbox ( complete with MOROSO stickers). Tuff N/A 350, turbo 400, 9" etc.

Yeah he nearly flattened a few of us when he opened it up and the front wheels came off the deck, someone said later "hey that's his street motor, you should see it go when the race motor is in it!"

A good topic to resurrect, this one, but yep pics are needed. I have heaps of eighties Street Machine and Performance Street Car mags, will see about getting a few cars scanned.

For my money one of the best of the era was Gary Myer's black Mustang coupe, a SummerNats Burn-out Comp winner.
