May be a long shot, but what about doing some work to your carport to convert it into a lockable garage??
I have no idea what your carport looks like, so I dont know if it is possible or not, but it is another option...

But they don't have a monthly option, and for that type of money, I would want that option. $1700 is $500 more than I was quoted, before the garage fiasco.

I agree mate, unisured is not an option, you could try a broker, there are insurance broker firms that not only do the rounds of the usual insurance companies but also the hedge funds that dabble in insurance that are underwritten by the big 5.

Sorry to hear that some people don't want your money :( Surely someone here has a similar beast insured without a garage.. (the mods in your sig don't appear to be excessive)..

Yeah they charge more because it is a tadesmans ute used on worksites or it would have been cheaper for me. That's cool though, just thought it may have been worth a shot if you are considering selling the T.

I know what you mean with the pay by the month thing though!

Ah I see the problem - you want the best of both worlds

Cheap Premium and Prestige Cover............Good Luck with that!

Before your mod's insurance was not a problem but now as you have diverted from the normal this cheap insurer does not want to take on the risk as you have increased their risk.

Shannons is a very reputable insurer and I am pretty sure that 100% of the cars they insure have to be parked in a garage UNLESS they are on a farm property and the like and can't be seen from the road.

My car cannot be seen from the road, it's behind 6" gates, and under a carport. With 3 dogs loose on the property. Where's the risk I ask?

Especially given that if they did comprehensivley insure you, you would be insured if the car got stolen from a train station or if you left it overnight at a mates house on the street in a dodgy suburb. Dosn't make much sense to me. Tried AAMI?

Not yet, but they would just send me to Just Cars, as they are part of the same company. I have another pot on the boil, we'll see what it yields.

Thank you for all the replies anyways, some good info has come my way. And I'll stick with the struggle. As far as selling the T? I couldn't do it. But I sure would hate not to be able to drive it.

Really? I thought AAMI was in the 'oh you have mods? then you have no insurance with us anymore' group of insurers.

Yeah I wouldn't take any quote on the net seriously. Over the net it said $2700.

Over the phone, I fed them the exact same info and it came up to $3355. Magic isnt it? This is with Just Cars.

Although I'm happy to learn my premium could go down by maybe $1000 next year as some some guy who has pretty much the same car and same age did.

Heres to hoping anyways. That $1000 would be good for mods. I'm not holding my breath. 1.5 weeks till I get my full licence though :sm_headba

Have you tried Budget Direct? I've been with them for the last couple of cars, not with modified cars though. http://www.budgetdirect.com.au/index.jsp

I found that a quote over the phone was cheaper than the online one but you could use the online system to see if they would cover you and get a rough price though.

have you explained the gate setup with them. I have an xr6t (admittedly not modified - althought they all would be classed high performance) and im with shannons. when they asked me if it was in a lockup garage i said "no, but its always parked off street behind gates where its not visible from the road".
Im insured.

It almost seems like its too hard?

You just have to escalate and expalin yourself truthfully and they will find some way around it.

Maybe its blocking any visability from the street to your carport or something that would make the difference.

Also Philstoj has and AU XR8 so I guess you need to verfiy this "no XR with Vigil" thing

Interesting reading....In all the cars I've insured over the years (including the XR) with different scumbag insurance companies, I'm pretty sure they only ever ask at what address the car is being kept, not wether its under cover or locked up etc?
Somebody mentioned insurance brokers before...yep thats where I got my deal, far cheaper than the usual suspects.

Try Torque Underwriting. I'm pretty sure their only proviso is no overnight on street parking. You'll have to go through a broker though - they won't deal with us mere mortals direct!

I've been with them for years for my modded car. Good value, good service, good cover, good price.

I have used QBE, they were good, and if they operate in Tasmania, I am sure they do in Victoria
Now I am with AMP, they give good coverage, good rates, however my cars are not modded.

Not to have ago at all you guys saying why not have a lock up garage, bought this house many years ago the way it was built there is a carport under the main roof no way you can put a lock up shed or lock up the carport. There is a lock up shed in the backyard but no way to drive a car to it the sides around the house are to narrow. With my el falcon no problems insuring it with SGIC never even asked if we housed it in a garage .

But a few years back my mum owned a ford meteor bit of a bomb really and it was stored behind a locked up carport with a steering lock .The whole of her street was packed with parked cars .Guess which car got broken into and damaged the one locked up !!!

And my last car 1980 sigma had been damaged by kids (i think)twice stuffing up the door locks on the second attempt they only did the drivers side stored outside under an open carport .It was always insured, after the second time I always parked it in the street unlocked, even left it open at the footy never touched .Friends Comodore under an open carport and alarmed(and turned on) stolen friend never heard the alarm go off!!

Morale of the story if they want it they will take it .Former owner of this house was in the shower(of this house) when an indigenous burgler(he was darker after the guy caught him) broke in through the roof !! Again if they want to steal something they will!!

The other being insurance companies are a law unto themselves the less said the better. I hope you found an insurance company!!

Been with Just Cars, and they charge like a wounded bull.

I have never heard such crap in my life. I could have worn an extra charge for not complying will this rule, but to be denied access to a prefered insurer for such a trivial detail is insane.... : : : : : :

Couldnt agree more ORSM T.I too called Shannons recently to insure my BA XR6T - Stock I mite add - and was given the same story.

My car gets garaged 50% of the time and is under a carport the rest of the time (depends who gets home first determines who gets garage spot). I was very dissapointed that a site sponsor didnt want my money (being 21, quite a large premium) but not to worry NRMA didnt have a problem with it...

Not quite true, most brokers (around here anyway) only work through a few companies.

As I found out when I went to renew my greenslip (3rd party ins for rego) with CIC ALLIANZ. They have no agent or office in Wagga.

I could, and did, pay it through a broker but they were only collecting the money the same way Newsagents and Chemists do.

Ever heard of renting? I am, and there ain't no way I'm paying for a garage to be built instead of the carport provided... as much as I would want one...

hey i was wondering... whats the definition of a "locked garage".
I have a carport with a 6 foot tall 2 door lockable gate, which has about 20 cm gap to the roof of the carport, which is inclosed bar 1 door.
IF i were to get a quote and asked the same question.. i wouldnt know what to reply with.
I was going to get my car insured with shannons, they were fine with everything i have done to the ghia till they asked for my age. BIG BUMMER.

Would it be worth banging up a lockable gate and sides along the carport if that would pass as being a garage for the cheaper insurance option?
