I honestly don't believe the negativity of some people on here.

Did anyone even read my post? The original writer applauded this version.. How is it disgraceful? Jeez, you should be glad some of the younger generation care about this countries history.

Get your heads out of your ar ses. Yes, it's different sounding music, but that's no reason to slam it. These kids (The Herd) care about this issue alot, enough to cover the song with the original writers permission.

If you don't like the music, fair enough. But to say it's disgraceful or sacrelidge (wtf?!) when they care about what they do is just pathetic to me. Learn to respect all different music, even if you don't like it.

Oh, and for those who didn't even listen to the whole song.. There's some original stuff in there towards the end, and the video clip has some Viet veterans who participated in it all. So maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions so easily.

Not yet, but will take a listen if can get hold of it

In my experience, very rarely a cover ever does justice to the original, remember madonna's version of Don Mcleans American Pie.

I remember seeing Redgum in concert, when they brought that song out (guess that show's my age), in a small country town, very rarely a popular band came here, and it was awsome.

Just like to also add, a lot of the people who have replied to this thread have mentioned how Redgum sang the song with so much heart.
Reason for this is the lead singer wrote the song about 2 of his best friend's who where called to Nam, so yes he was singing from the heart

I liked it. Although the original I find is more "powerful" and it will always have its place.

Its in a differing style to the original, of course, but the only differences is a more flowing or catchy rhythm, and with that some lyrics have to be slightly modified. The same message is still conveyed.

Like others have said above, it will appeal to younger generations, continuing the ANZAC spirit. Better than the spirit dying off.

when i saw The Herd in Melbourne a couple of months ago, they actually got I think it was John Schuman to come out on stage to sing it with them.

I dont like the commercial version, it was originally done on a segment for JJJ called "like a version" and it sounded a whole lot better there. There was emotion in the song, but the version that has been produced for release i feel has lost that emotion.

I still think though that it appeals to a totally different demographic than the original, and that can only be a good thing.

IF anyone can find that version, or if it gets rlsed on the next 'like a version', post it up, it's MUCH better than the final 'recorded' version, I agree....

To those who shut it down early, wait till Redgum comes into the song at the end..

Im not a huge fan of it, but i do like the Herd's stuff.

I reckon the track before it "The Metres Gained" on the Sun Never Sets album, is an awesome song for describing war and the difficulties the Diggers faced.

Theres a clip on youtube with the original layed over the video clip for the Herds version. They go very well together. Alot better than the Herds version with the same clip.

Which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gmgwx77osw

I LOVE the original version. So much passion and heart. The Herds isnt as good BUT if it gets some of us young blokes interested in some politics and whatnot then its done its job.

Sorry for the difference in opinion. I will now conform. How silly of me not too.

PS; the cover still sucks.

As i posted earlier

i dont like it but let that go

i dont give a ratts kiver as to what you said above

i lost family at that war and me as a family listen to it every time we get together ( the original version )

not this crap that has been made as a cover version

get over it and lets just live with the reality that some songs should be left alone

DISCRACEFUL!

If they want to make a political statement then cover Midnight Oil.
That song should be left exactly as it was written, for the purpose it was written.

Its not a cover. Any change in lyrics = not a cover. Simple as that. Butchered, thast what it is. Butchered.

Oh, regardless of the content the music is utter gutter trash that a bunch on unemployed social degenerates could rummage up between their morning bong and cashing their centerlink cheque to pay for the mrs coathanger abortion.

Maybe you should pull your head out your ****. This remake is garbage, learn to respect other opinons moron or find somewhere else to post yours.

As I have said before, I have never heard a improved remake of a song... ever. If something is great leave it alone, especially if your planning to make a rap/hip hop version of a classic.

I saw the making of this song on Video Hits... Or RAGE a few months ago.

They showed how The Herd worked with the origonal guy who wrote/sang it or what ever...
Included Vets in the update version, ect.

Was pretty interesting actually, But i still prefer the origonal.

lol threads like this crack me up...
the "like a version" version can be found on the TripleJ hottest 100 from about 2 yrs ago.. and yes, it does sound alot better live.
funnily enough at the start of the live version you can hear the guy saying "if they don't like it, tell 'em to go home" don't know what its in relation to tho lol...

so quick to jump to stereotypes Dan? you're a Civil Engineer, yet you listen to death metal.
not everyone is as they first appear..

"anyone heard this song? i like it"
"argh its crap my ears cant handle it, make it stop"
"actually i think its good"
"its sacriledge"
"hip hop must die"
"the original writer must hate it"
"the original writer supports the new version"
"it's still sacriledge"
"i'm old and can't handle change"

like i said, threads like this crack me up

Why exactly does this song seem so hated? Butchered? Sacrilege?

These guys are singing about the same thing that redgum were when they sung it and yes it does happen to be slightly different but so what. You people sure are giving this song some ***** when all they have done is cover a song they grew up with and want to pay their respects with. A few bits of the lyrics have been swapped around but the powerful message is still there, and in reality listening to one after the other there really isnt that much difference apart from the tempo. The guy from redgum who sang it even had a laugh when they played it to a few vets an they loved, but one old fella just said 'oh well they speakin a bit fast for me to catch'. Im only 18 but a prouder australian you will not find.. i have the southern cross tattooed on my chest over my heart. My best mate has it on his shoulder another has the outline of australia on his chest. So we are not a bunch of "unemployed social denegrates" nor are we disrespectful to australia in anyway. In a way i believe it is targeting the younger australians like myself who are extremely patriotic but have a bit more of an open mind. Im not a rap/hip-hop fan at all but i dont mind this song because it still strikes a chord.

An as to walkinshaw someone mentioned you listen to death metal id say quite a few metalheads are gettin up to a morning bong an dole check.

110% agreed. What i plaster above was exatcly that, a broad brush stereotype. A failed attempt at humor if you will.
