Sorry to hear about the break in mate, it's not the stuff that goes missing, but the sinking feeling that somebody has been through your stuff. A few years ago, we were broken into 3 years in a row. Cleaned us out, furniture, tv's, jewellry, everything. Next year same thing happened and then again for 3rd year in a row. We no longer live at that house. Its a bad feeling the first time, but the second and third time, you start to become desensetized to it all and realize the feeling of violation isnt there cause the mongrels dont really care, its not personal to them, its just a quick buck. Would love to catch em in the act though. By the way, the cops were useless. They asked me if I was insured and when I said yes, they said, you'll be right then. Alot of help.

Our bus depot got broken into 3 times in 3 months. They went into the office and poured beer through all the desk drawers. We don't keep any cash there, and all the tools were locked up in another shed.
They didn't actually take anything, just made a mess.

But we did have a talking c0ckatiel locked into the tool shed, as we could no longer keep him at home.

The guy that we rent the other shed to on the block often leaves it unlocked.
They found bolt cutters, and opened our tool shed, then tried to take the bird.
It chewed and scratched the hell out of them before they had to let it go, and it flew away.

The bird had been in the family as a pet since my Dad was about 12.
It wasn't tagged or anything, and the only reason that it's wings hadn't been clipped was because it was so damn viscious.

Right on brother

Having been in the security industry for 19 years I do feel for you getting invaded by some lolife but leaving doors open in this day & age is just asking for trouble
Lock your security doors & fit a cat door to it

We also have 3 BIG dogs to keep vermin out of our back yard ( nobody wants to take on that many )

Rotties will not go overweight like a Blue Heeler without exercise. Too much running around is not that good for big dogs like Rotties. Rotties will only beef up if over fed.

Rotties are even recommended for old ladies living in flats. They will sit next to you all day watching TV with you. My sister's dog stays inside for 11 hours a day from 7am-6pm, Mon-Fri. Just some basic training as a puppy to toilet train it and its fine.

They are natural inside dogs, make sure you get a dog with docked tail for inside.

My point about getting an alarm is just because this has made us realise you're not safe anymore even in nice quiet areas where people leave their cars unlocked and doors/windows open regularly. Times are a changin. :
I live in a small unit alone and never leave the doors unlocked - at least the front one. The back yard is well shielded - it has shade cloth over a timber frame down one end and is attached to the brick wall blocking that end off. The neighbours have a tall garage forming another boundary - got to be at least 3 metres high. Then a lattice down the other end making the fence higher and my garage - which is the only way from the back yard out the front. They have to be bloody determined to get into the back yard. If I'm out washing the car or something I'll lock the front door and leave the garage open, but no-one's getting past without me seeing them if I'm out there.

Leaving the doors open is a bad idea. They can sneak in and knock off your stuff while your watching a movie or something, or it gives more dangerous confrontational thieves an opportunity. The cat door is a better solution to leaving a door open. Or just let the cat out when it needs to go out - worked with my family for 20 years - besides that you let the insects in. Security doors are important - not only do they provide another barrier, you can also let fresh air in without compromising your home.
