I recently lost consciousness a couple of times and it felt like it was about to happen again. Prior to passing out I get this back and forth sensation and down I go. Today felt the same.

The shaking motion made me grab onto one of the racks at work, that was shaking too so I crouched down in anticipation of passing out again, and then after 20 or 25 seconds it just went away. So I’m sitting there wondering if I tell work or not, then my phone starts ringing and it’s my better half asking if I felt the earthquake! That explained a lot!

First one I’ve been awake for!

I'm two hours north of Melbourne, and most definitely noticed it!

I actually didn't feel it as such. I was outside at the time, first sign of it was a rumbling sound like a a few trucks passing on the highway, then the windows of the shop started to shake quite violently. I turned around and was greeted with some very concerned looking customers. My boss was indoors at the time and said the whole building was shaking. I also noticed the water in our bird baths was swaying from side to side, not shimmering, swaying.

The first earthquake I have experienced. Every customer from then on had their own story to tell. I did laugh at one who remarked at least it gives us something other than Covid to talk about.

Hi Everyone,
tell the truth i didn't feel a thing here at home.
I only found out when i heard it on the news.

When NewCastle had there Earthquake i was driving a truck and i was in a loading dock in Surry Hills when the truck started to shake.

I told the guy's in the loading dock to stop jumping on the back of the truck only to find out that there wasn't anybody on the back of the truck.

hmm ... i thought it was a "gippsland" earthquake

when it started i thought the missus was behind me pushing the chair to get my attention

thank goodness it wasn't a 'bad' earthquake ..... dunno about Mansfield tho

First earthquake for me was in Lansvale, Sydney NSW, would of been 1972-73, I worked late and slept on a stretcher in the office, made of fibro, it was about 6am, just a whole lot a shaking, then noise then me on floor and the fibro wall next to me cracked in two diagonally! ....dident help my hangover, but it was pretty scary, the family german shepherd was found the next day in Cabramatta.......

Teacher.......OK kiddies get under the desks!

Child.....But that won't help us!

Teacher.....I know, but that's what the rules say!

Child.....But there are 2 floors of concrete above us!

Teacher...I know, but that's what the rules say!

Child....But we will get flattened!

Teacher....Yes, I know but if you follow the rules it's ok!

Child....Why!

Teacher...If you are not under a table when you get flattened, then you mum and dad can't claim compensation!

Child....Why!

Teacher...Because you dident follow the ru.................

I appreciate that your post was meant (somewhat?) lightheartedly, but the serious reason as to why the guidance is to jump under a desk (or some other solid structure) is that the risk of a building collapse is far less than being injured by flying debris from within the building.

1. Get under a table if you can.

2. Or stand under a door way, stay AWAY from walls.

3. If able, get out, but stay in the open. Makes sense.

Here's the advice from Emergency Management Victoria as to what to do if an earthquake occurs (note the author must be American

)

Inside:
* Drop, cover under a sturdy table or piece of furniture and hold on
* Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit

In an elevator:
* Drop, cover and hold on
* When the shaking stops, try to get out at the nearest floor if you can safely do so

Driving:
* Pull over to a clear location away from buildings, trees, overpasses, and powerlines
* Stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops
* Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that may have been damaged

Outdoors:
* Move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and powerlines, then drop, cover and hold on

At the beach or near the coast:
* Drop, cover and hold on, then move to higher ground immediately in case a tsunami follows

Near mountains, hills, slopes or cliffs:
* Be alert for falling debris or landslides

Did a drive around inspections today of most of the drystone walls I've built in the North East. Everyone is as it should be with no movement or loose stones.

When that statement was first made tables were solid things, mortice & tennon joins, no stupid clips

The under table advice will work okay for offices or places with suspended ceilings but I'm with you on the door frame theory. Most buildings are now up to earthquake code in NZ but if you read the code, and I have spoken to government inspectors on site, it isn't all that comforting. The base level of code works on the building staying standing long enough to evacuate everyone inside, after that point it has done the required job and can be demolished. BIL had the second story of his house land on him in the Christchurch quake.

if the Victorian's already haven't suffered enough being locked away thanks to Covid for what seems for ever, now they have suffered a Earthquake.

I was talking to my brother on the phone whos a builder and he says " don't get under a table in case of an earthquake your better off in a door way " that was his advice anyway.

We are lucky in Australia, fairly decent building code, imagine some of these jerry built unit blocks overseas or a Favela in South America, maybe there is merit in building Tee Pee's in North America, very smart dudes eh!

Before my mum and dad were married in 1949, they both lived in the docklands inner city area in Liverpool England, mums family home got a direct hit by a German bomb, it was 1940, all that was left was a special kitchen table, made of steel which survived, they got to an underground shelter, in 1942 after 2 years of bombing, mums brother my Uncle Willie whom I never remember, he was murdered on the Liverpool Docks, he was "white anting" his work mates as they come on for day shift, he was going around his workmates houses to "see the wives" they dropped a 3 ton packing crate on him, lol, in 1958.

But he come back from Holland on furlough and was sitting in the kitchen of a mates house having a cuppa, air raid sirens sounds, they knew they wouldn't make the shelter, so they cracked a bottle of beer, its a true story too, a German 200 pound bomb hit the house and just come straight through the roof, dident explode, and embedded itself in the kitchen floor!

They say he walked out with his mate and his hair was standing on end, straight up, it fell out the following day and grew back white, lol.
Mum said he was never the same after that, just the shock of it I suppose, I think an earthquake could do that to you no worries, shock is a killer, am glad no fatalities in Victoria, don't even know wether anyone was injured or not?

Geez it's sheared the wire connectors/ties in the mortar joints!..I can see one at the top, 3 courses down is intact, the others have just snapped under tension, wow!
Lucky it dident topple over on someone

It should of been chopped off, he was stationed in Holland after the war, they had to send him home, reckon he tried to "repopulate" Holland all by himself!.....must of been a bit of a lad, but that's life I suppose, got to take the good with the bad, he was a decorated soldier for bravery and mentioned in dispatches a few times, but, he liked sex by the looks of it!

It’s not engaged masonry, and relying on pretty marginal ties. Probably added soon after original construction.

BCA is alright, but it’s poor in tanking for basements - UK code is far superior - and we’re not designing for catastrophic (and frequent!) enough extreme events; bushfires, heat, cyclones/tornadoes.
