What are the chances of getting spares in 25 years for a low production australian car that is somewhat unique by world standards especially with all the electronics in cars these days. Also would the electronics survive long term storage in terms of dust and moisture?

Lot of cars that are a hundred years old and have been driven regularly. It's all about maintenance and mechanical sympathy.

Problem is that 100yo cars are simple, mechanical things which can be fixed with simple tools. A 100yo FGX will likely be a non-runner as the plastic will have degraded, electronics failed an no one knows how to fix them (much like early EFI is now).

Might as well drive that FGX and enjoy it while it's useful .. then store is as a static display when it becomes all too hard/expensive.

This is a large part of the reason why the old iron has a certain collector value, relatively easy to work on and restore..................looking at the way cars are built today, I can not see any long term collectable future for them, let alone a time when it will be viable to restore them. Look after them, drive and enjoy them, then move them on when the time is right, but don't expect to make money out of it because it won't happen, pure and simple.

Couple of ways to look at it, you could either:
1) Invest $$$ into buying lots of Falcon parts now and stock them, sell the parts at a premium price to those that run them into the ground and / or mothball them, or
2) Mothball the Falcon and buy parts from person in scenario 1, once parts starts decaying, or
3) Run the Falcon into the ground and buy parts from person in scenario 1, for parts that are broken, or
4) Buy the Falcon, drive it, look after it and live with the fact that inevitably, you will be driving another NON Falcon car thinking how good your old Falcon used to be...

Somehow I cant see how todays Falcon (or any other standard car) will be considered a desirable classic in 40 years time in the sameway that we look at an XY or XC now.

Trying to avoid saying a cliché, its just todays car don't seem to be timeless anymore.

Remember my late father saying the exact same thing when we were talking about XW/XY/XA/XB Falcons, I recall his words like they were yesterday, 'Who would want one of these rust buckets in 20 or 30 years time??' at the time he was referring to a genuine GTHO Phase three I was looking at, talked me into buying a newish Mazda 323 instead

Lucky I kept my XB GS Coupe in a shed instead of selling it the wreckers for $500 as he suggested.

if you bought one today at $40k and didn't touch it you would have to get $100k in 40 years time to get any profit at all, plus you would want a return of more than 5% so you would have to sell it for $600k to make it worth while

Out of curiosity what's your XB GS Coupe worth? as we are talking 40 years old now?

40 years ago a 351 manual XB cost $4600, calc'd inflation to today and its worth $27000
and an XB GT coupe cost about $6200 and worth $36k today

so chances are if you pick the right car you won't lose too much cash but you certainly wouldn't make anything

wait 10 years buy an FG-X XR for about $15k and keep it 30 years and you might make some money

No idea, but at a guess in it's current condition some where around $45-50K would be reasonable to sell it, but would not sell it for that, probably would not sell it for double that as I like the car and don't need the money.

It's real exciting when we see an untouched Phase 3 with low kms, or a XW or XY GT, because there are only a handful of cars like that, literally.

I can see in 30 years time the GT national unrestored class will have 500 BF cobras, 40 anniversary, GT R-specs, GT Blacks, GT-Fs lined up with delivery kms on the clock.....

You can go buy a ute but there are 100s maybe 1000s of guys mothballing FPVs, some even just XR utes.

In 25 years time I'll buy a low km 30 year old GT, there a heaps being stored so it won't be any supply and demand issue.

And rough estimate for how many performance model FGX's may be sold?

I think back in the XY GT days people didn't know they would become the classic that they did, but with the last model performance Falcons people are automatically assuming they will be and so there will be many mothballers. I think this will actually prevent them from being as desired as the XY's.

Meh, never saw the desire to spend a bunch of $$ on a vehicle to only lock it up and never use it. Just to gain extra $$.
Unless these are Ferrari 250 GTOs or even XY GTHOs, they're not going to appreciate much in value if any. Sorry to say there is nothing special about these or the HSVs. They're just modded sedans that have no racing background or anything that would justify a sudden appreciation in value. If they do, bonus, but I seriously doubt.

In saying that, whoever buys the car, it is their choice to do what they wish with it. I respect those guys who spend the odd 5mill or so on their 1962 Ferrari GTOs and go race them on the track. They're enjoying their purchase.

Back in late 2005 some bloke in Qld bought one of the last production run Monaro's. At the time, they cost about the $62k mark.
Every month I get Unique Cars magazine & this bloke has been advertising this car ever since he purchased it. It's still got only delivery mileage & has been kept in an airtight car cocoon. He wants $65k for it & here we are 10-11 years later & he's still got it....

Yes and paid a motza on insurance, rego and interest to keep something that you can go and buy for 26 grand with 100,000 kms on it. Still the same car.

BF Cobra owners are the kings of this kind of behavior, most of them will have to be burried with their cars!

Am I missing something here?? Who registers their cars when they are stored up?? What interest??

I currently have seven cars in storage, and none are registered, have not paid a cent in interest on any of them and only the tree most valuable ones (40K and over) are insured and insurance on laid up and stored cars is cheap (around $200 per year) , I pay cash for my cars, if you need to get a loan to buy a car you can't really afford the car IMO, I would never get a loan for a depreciating asset these days unless I can offset it on my tax in some way.

Also not all people store cars to make money, some just like the cars they have.

I wish I kept some of my other cars I had (Mk2 GT Cortina, TE S Pac 250 4 Speed, XB GT, my old 40 Series, my ELXR8 Series 2 5 speed) but no room back then...

I also think people who buy a car to 'put away' generally have the $$ to do so, if I had more $$ to spare I would have a bigger shed and more cars I still desire.
