I started collecting parts for my XD with the intent to complete it before I got my drivers licence.
That didn't happen, and I haven't touched it now in over 10 years, because it's crammed in with other people's junk in our shed. Still have all the bits, will get to it one day, and I'll continue to hold on to it all until then.

I'm a bit of a hoarder.. Have boxes full of parts stored in our sheds. As it is a corner of my bedroom is dedicated to clevo engine parts I was collecting for a project car I dont have any more. Most the parts there to build a tunnelrammed 383 clevo. If anyone asks I just say they are worth too much for someone to steal out of the shed lol.

You need to store car parts in your bedroom? Are they so valuable that they should be in a safe or do you live in a shoebox with no space for that **** outside?

Another hoarder right here and still buying. I may never use or need them but once you sell them, they are gone and there's no replacing them. It's unlikely that the money I get will be spent on my self anyway so there's no point. I can't believe the stuff that I threw out! I'll never make that mistake again

Live in a good sized place. Just safer in my room with no risk of damage or theft and allows more room in the shed for other stuff. You will be surprised how many people keep car parts in their bedroom or house.

True as. My room has a good amount of parts. Im in a rental (yes landlord doesnt care what i store where), if i leave stuff outside or in sheds they can be damaged from housemates or by the landlord who still has stuff here and comes n goes. Also stops stuff from going missing. Dont have much choice. Gotta start sending parts back to Sydney when my parents visit

I guess it's the difference between buying parts for a car you actually own or are intending to build, and just snapping up absolutely anything valuable just because. As in, just because you own an XYZ what have you, doesn't mean you need 15 hood emblems, 23 rear louvers, 17 original hubcaps, 57 door handle surrounds etc. Of course I'm not saying you should just give it away, make your money for it, but keeping it in a box and then continuing to buy more emblems/louvers/etc. just for the sake of it seems odd. But that's just my opinion of course, and from the perspective of someone trying to find rare parts for my car that others are buying but don't seem to need. Call it jealousy if you like *shrug*

The guy I got the 38 off had a head of stuff including (but not limited to) 6 hope and 6 lover NOS 38 commercial / standard grills and several good condition used ones I've got my emergency ones but others have been sold off as required or swapped for parts I need I don't sell them because I have them I wait till o don't see any around then I put 1 up with a suitable / reasonable starting price and see what happens, most times I'm pleasantly surprised

I have 3 sets of chrome headlight surrounds for 1 ZD. There is no way I will part with them. I have many other spares for a ZD including a spare body that I will probably never need but they're mine forever. Do I feel guilty? Not on your life. Try to separate them from me at your peril!!!
I do have an XC grille that I have been trying to give away though. I can't throw it out but nobody seems to want it... I also have an XC GS instrument cluster for someone who genuinely wants one for their XC. The fascia is not very good but can be restored and the gauges all worked when I removed them from a car... |

Collected a full set of XC fairmont GXL bright work for my project over the course of 12 or so months. I won't need any of it now but the time and money I spent getting it all I am not going to be letting it go to just any bloke. Who knows what might happen in the future. It's not costing me anything by sitting there, but you can guarantee it'll cost 3x or 4x as much in 10 years time to find the same stuff.

Bugger me, I just had a call from a sort of friend, I know the guy he's mates with a mate but travels in a different circle. (This guy still owes me from some parts he got off me 6 months ago) any how he's in the mad rush getting it back on the road for Summernats and he's after a generator for a flatty and our mutual friend told him I might have one.
As a matter of fact I do, I only got it a few months ago with the view of using it on a new project, as he's in the **** and a sort of mate I told him what it cost me and he could have it but I would prefer to keep it, or I was happy to lone it for Summernats, he didn't want to borrow it for the reason of if it shat it's self where would everyone stand (I respect that) but when he got ****** at the price and said, I know I still owe you that $100 I'll give you that but I'm not paying ******* stupid prices so you can make back that hundred and cover your Christmas holiday. I told him to keep the hundred and go have relations with his This guys taken stuff he was given by mates and sold it for good money but I'm not allowed to recover costs Reminds me of another time on a farcebook page a guy posted he was after tail lights for a 37chev and was willing to pay $250 for it I had one I didn't need and I replied I had US Repro set (got a few things I didn't need when the $$$ was good) a and would let them go for $250 (I'd seen it higher on eBay but figured I didn't need to post it pay PayPal etc so that was OK) he then asked if I'd take $150 Um mate you set the price a lower price than I'd seen them go for on eBay. I'll pass It didn't matter with in 2 mins of the guy low along me I sold it to another member of the group for $250 I'll keep holding bibs and bobs and ignore the ******* if they don't want to pay what it owes me for something they can't find anyware I'm not interested in dealing with them

I envy hoarders... particularly ones who have the room to store stuff. I try and hoard parts (double up's and spares not needed) during various projects but end up selling them with either with the vehicle when it's finished or by classifieds as I keep telling myself I wont need them anymore because that's the last ever project..... No more old cars....ever!!!
Then a few months later when the itch returns and another project starts I'm kicking myself because I have to try and find the same spare parts all over again... |

I have to agree that I don't see the point of hanging on to 15 of the one item. If I had more than one spare rear window trim for a couple then yes I would sell them off and keep at least one for my self

a couple of years ago when i had my '74 Toyota crown (House Of Kolor Brandywine, SSR reverse mesh 15s, etc), i had HEAPS of spare parts come with the car on purchase, and that i added to when i wrecked a $300 one (for a few odd parts that i couldnt source by themselves), all of these parts (a huge amount) i passed onto the new owner upon sale.
carbies, chrome trims, crown bumpers, seatbelts, fuel related stuff, switches, wiring harnesses, list goes on). wasn't hard to find parts, just a few odd ones were tricky. i think, if you have the car, or are planning to build one, it is fair. i dislike the people who just hold out for money, yes what they are doing is legal, but it's so frustrating to people who need the parts & have the money to buy one haha. glad my '71 capri is mostly tube chassis and fibreglass.... **** is easy to source ;) with the wagon, dgaf, if i need something, ill buy it .... it's AWESOME having a clutter free garage and shed

The greatest line in relation to the parts collecting was made by a forum member on AFF:
"Better to look AT it, than to look FOR it" |

FPV parts are where it's at now. If I stack the GT that's it. I can't replace anything as it just not available.

I grab everything...and I mean everything...that will fit my '82 Celica. Luckily being Toyota there'[s a fair bit of parts sharing so old Corona and sometimes Corolla wrecks in the bush get picked over for little bits and pieces. Got a fair horde of small hard to find bits and pieces now.
Just common sense when you own something old. |

Um yeh a hoarder.
When i moved 4 months ago, had a small cleanout. Funny enough, not much car parts thrown out, more so household and computer gear. Some reason had 3 printers and 2 parts computers i chucked out (proper recycle for computer gear) Car parts, happy to hoard them as soemtimes prices fluctuate

Shed is for most parts, my mint bonnet for my 1600 lives in my wardrobe safely behind the suits and buttoned shirts I never wear. Also currently have a freshly painted spoiler for my BA stashed on top of my pantry where nobody is tall enough to reach it / scratch it until I get time to install it
