Post 2017 - Predict the future - What car(s) will you actually BUY?

Very interesting "smoko table discussion subject".

I'd like to predict I'll still have my old '82 Celica...obviously with some modifications by then.
Our "main car" at the moment is a car that suits our purposes extremely well. It's a mid-2011 Triton twin cab 4x4. It would be perfectly possible to just keep on trucking with that thing for years to come, barring some catastrophic mechanical failure. It would only be six years old in 2017.

However, say we needed something else, it would, at all my predictions, be another twin cab 4x4 diesel auto. Undoubtedly turbo diesels will just get better and better and more efficient.
I'd probably do what we did this time...pick something a year or two old with plenty of warranty left. Potentially a Ford Ranger as I like the look of them, but definitely second hand, as new prices on them are just about as ridiculous as Hilux's ludicrous prices under the "Toyota Tax"...second hand is the only way to go.

Taxis? Around Rocky I mostly see bloody Prius taxis, people movers, and hybrid Camrys.

Senior Police and guys in the garages love cars and any chance to fang in something different is readily taken. Trouble is Cop cars get written off quite regularly and trying to explain to the commissioner that you lost 3 X $75000 Volvos this week means the cheaper just as capable option will always win out.

My neighbour is snr Hwy patrol -- not a PR exercise at all. They like the AWD element of the performance sedans ...easier to explain 3x $75k than 8x $45k and 4x funerals.

No, Mustang has the 6R80 (basically a ZF built under licence by Ford). Same as the diesel Territory

Since when has Michigan been in China

It is based on the ZF 6HP26 transmission and is built under license by the Ford Motor Company at its Livonia Transmission plant in Livonia, Michigan.

Medium sized cars (Ecoboost Mondeos or AWD Libertys) would do perfectly IMO. I think they've just created a culture whereby they get SS or XR6Tees because they WANT them, not because they NEED them.

Personally I'd be happy to see them in F6"s and GTs,, most of the time they may not go full throttle , but if they need to they should have the capability to get there quick.

Bought an FG GT late last year as a long term keeper.

Will plan to buy a new Terry as my daily before they end as a long term option so won't have to worry about "what now" question for a long time I hope.

Well one of the reasons I justified buying brand new was that it helped the local industry, with local car making going I will probably buy second hand from then on. A two year old Audi A4 wagon would be nice. But I think il just keep my locally made cars for as long as possible.

It's a great car but I doubt we'll see Infinity in Australia come 2017. Our market is just too saturated with brands.

All good except you overlook Governments of all types are addicted to revenue like a fat kid to cake and won't readily give up an income stream if they don't have to.

Would be really surprised if they dropped the LCT - afterall it applies to Australian cars as well as the imports so wasn't protecting them at all. If anything protected the lower end cars - both locals and imports - by pricing the 'upmarket' cars that little bit further out of reach.

The only protection given to local cars was import tariffs - and they have been eroded over the years arguably contributing to the situation.

I hang up the stethoscope and turn off the radio in 2018, so I don't see a need to feel nostalgic and run out and buy new just as I retire. I'd say keep the Ranger until I can't climb into it any more, then look at something smaller with a Ford badge to take me out until I get a walking frame (which will have fishing rod holders of course).

I don't do a lot of km's, so I expect I'll be keeping my GenF til 2019. A RangeRover Sport is top of my wish list. Will probably be cheaper than a used GT which will probably be selling for $200k ;)

Hope the 2015 model XR8 and Mustang that I intend to buy next year will last me till 2020+, after that Ford better have a model with a powerful enough Flux Capacitator to get my *** off the ground.......;)

Still a PR exercise like the Porsche and like the FPV and the F6's, HSV's, WRX etc. Manufacturers like to massage there products image every now and then especially if sales are slow so they give Emergency Services etc a good deal on their Hero models and spin a bit of BS about product development, calibrating to local conditions, durabilty testing etc, to get some mutually benficial PR.

Personal opinion is long shifts, distraction, excessive work load, time of day would have more to do with HWP accidents than whether they are driving a Volvo or an Aurion, Commodore, Falcon.
