about 2 months ago i was almost convinced on buying a VE SS. It had the right price, v8 and i didnt mind the looks. Hell it even drove around town pretty good.

Then push came to shove and i got to take one for a spin with a bit more enthusiastic use of the steering wheel (which dosnt feel right to me for some reason?).
Pretty much put, when these things have to move, their size becomes known and they feel like a much larger (and dated) car. Drove an fg XR8 straight after, and if i still manage to find one for a good price i would part money for a used fg xr8 than a new ss. And thats regardless of brand loyalty at this point. If the SS was a better car, the red camps ranks would be swelling.


The price may be good, but the product feels way more dated than the FG in terms of driving experience. So seeing them at this price is no big surprise when they are trying to sell what is essentially an old car with an updated bumper, circle air con vents and a new touch screen.
The SS is big, it feels big and even tastes big! (okay not really).

Im almost convinced that the only reason why there are so many SS's on the road today is simply because they come in as a povo pack that Ford couldnt compete with.

If indeed (like stevez suggested) the basic SS is just an SV6 with a V8 engine (like early SV8) then that's all it's really worth.....

The SS is cheaper to make than the SV6, the problem is its a real bait and switch deal, it is very hard to find a manual sedan non-Z series. Most people will walk out the dealer with 50 grand auto Z series. Even more for the popular Sportwagon.

The real Aussie car bargain is Ecoboost Falcon for 30 grand that dealers are doing, it's this cheap even though it is low volume and has an expensive European made, turbocharged and direct-injected engine. Zetec Ecoboost Mondeos are going for base model Camry prices - if they advertised these prices to the wider world people will be knocking down Ford's door. As much as the Holden's SS sale price is misleading, it at least gets people thinking about buying.

As you rightly said, there's actually little to no stock to sell at those prices.

41 grand for a manual sedan which has been superceded by the Z-series pack. The Mexican made V8 is cheaper than the Port Melbourne V6 - Holden are laughing all the way to the bank. Im sure if Ford got themselves a crate 5.0 from the Mustand/F150 they would sell them more than the 30 grand they are struggling to get for the Ecoboost - bonus is that the 5.0 would probably be cheaper to make than the Ecoboost.

The VE is approaching 7 years old, which might not be a big deal to fleet buyers after 6 cylinder Falcons or Commodores, but private buyers want a new looking car - honestly who would spend over 40 grand on something that has been around since Howard was in office. Im shocked they sell as much as they do. Really a RWD car makes the most sense in the performance or luxury guise, otherwise there are better value cars for family and fleet duties. The V8 Commodores are probably the most sensible vehicle Holden produces from a business-plan point of view - big sales, big exports oppurtunities, big image-building, big profits and little competition.

They just need to bring out the VF pronto.

Are Holden still doing this 0.5% finance deal or whatever it was? If so, combined with this special, its a pretty hard bargain to ignore. Add on their Vapour Injected LPG from factory and you have a sweet V8 for cheap running costs and minimal power loss. Hmm lets see how i go in the lotto draw this weekend haha.

Very true (to this and Brazen's comment). Saw some EcoLPI Mk2 Xr6's on Carsales last week going for 33k driveaway no more to pay! Insane value for cars that have only done 9km! Damn my lack of money!!!

For those worrying about LS2 fuel consumption - I hired a MY12 Caprice this year, drove it like I stole it, and returned 17L/100klms. If i were in a Windsor with 100kw less I would have returned 25L+.

There's XR6s and XT Ecoboosts out there at or below $31,990 drive away,
the reason dealers are doing that is because there's no buyers..

Eagleheart, the conditions in which I was driving (mountain pass) and with the gusto I did it, If i were in an EFI windsor with ~170kw (rather than 270 of the LS2) I would have returned 25L/100klms, not the surprisingly good 17L/100klms that I did do.

Lets be honest, $40,990 is a bloody good deal.

I want a V8, this is where the no XR8 option hurts.

I would love a GS Coyote, but the 17K difference is a big hurdle to climb.

I will prob end up buying a 2010 GS UTE or an older BF MK 2

I argument is that Ford has nothing available in a v8 unless I go the FPV brand.

Holden has the SS and the Maloo in the V8 range.

When I just checked there were 51 S/C V8 GS utes on carsales starting at $42k with 4-7,000km.

FG2s brand new start at $49k not $57k.

You did look at actual cars for sale rather than compare a chronically discounted promotion against a RRP figure off some brochure.

those sought of sale figures (10) won't help Ford.
As it has been previously mentioned before.
If you want a slow, fuel sucking cheap v8, go buy the Holden for all the noise and no action.
if you want cheap performance, buy the ford turbo 6.
if you want the noise and the performance, buy the GS, but please do a bit of haggling, who knows you may get it for the same price as a SS;)

For me buying the SSV ute wasn't just about torque and power figures as I have the GT as my toy. But as a daily ute, the Holden is a much better setup, IRS, bigger and better cabin (storage pockets are great), the one piece body looks the good in my opinion and I think overall the VE ute looks better than the FG. BF FPV's are my favorite.

Also the kit available with the SSV was too hard to say no to when compared to the GS...

and in all honestly the 6L is a good motor when it's a daily and your not chasing cheap power.

If I had the money, I would have a GT for a toy too.
But I would probably have a diesel hilux or simular for a daily ute.
