I vaguely remember the issue you are talking about, but I though it was black XY/XW with a 5L from an E series with an EF/EL interior.

That car in the link is running. I read it just had a tune a couple of weeks ago and put out 733rwhp on 29psi

I have seen a hot rod with a twin turbo skyline engine in it. It is something different, actually sounded good with the short exhaust! So if you have the money, turbo 6 it!

Alot of peopel will hate me for saying this but have you considered a 3.8 buick motor from a VN-VY commodore.

You can pick them up cheap and the earlier pre ecotec ones dont require alot of computer power, ive seen it done really well in a few old holdens to a great result.

Im guessing you could do the same with a EA falcon 6 or 8.

I would stay away from any ford motor that requires the ICC.

Just do it.

Too many people stick to stodgy old V8's that need to be worked to buggery and suck fuel like there's a hole in the tank to reach anywhere near the levels of power you get out of a recent six, especially turboed ones, in Falcons.
RRS does nice rack and pinion and strut front ends for the old girls, and someone will surely do kits for the small amount of work needed to fit stuff in.
The computers and wiring is a snap for any competant auto electrician.

If you're going to spend big money on a project, why not make it different to the hundreds of others out there?

Just do it!!!

Wouldn't it be great if ford re released a new version of an xy. Sort of like how the current mustang looks like the old one.

Hi all it's been ages since I've been on here. I'm building an xy wagon and was thinking of putting a fuel injected 6, about AU ish. Is it a straight up swap engine mount wise or is it a pain in the bum. I've got a clevo block but was aiming at a cruiser. Has anyone bothered with a 6?

+1. Probably a lot easier to get a more modern Windsor in there if you want to transplant a younger heart in there. Cost and availability should be better too.

Heres my take. If you have heaps of cash and patience do it. If not build a hydraulic roller, alloy headed, multipoint injected cleveland. Put a modern transmission behind it with a four link 9". Cheaper, yes (depending how much you do yourself), easier, yes, cool as faaark, yes. Stay semi-sensible on the cam and converter and it will still go like hell, get reasonable milage and you won't have to comply with modern emission regs.

Its a lot easier to do with a later 5.8 EFI Windsor out of a truck, its already injected and basically all the 5.0 Mustang gear fits, and it can be stroked to over 400 cubes. It could be fitted up to an Aod or BTR 4 speed too.

No matter how high-tech, it'd still just be "another XY with a V8"...

Be different and go the turbo six route!!

When people first started doing this sort of conversion it was very expensive...very...now there's all sorts of after market computers available from all sorts of sources, complete wiring looms to suit, and plenty of experience around the place and much better knowledge of what has to be done to make it all work.

I remember when those "alloy hemis", the Jap V8s, first started to be imported, and there was very little knowledge and even less experience about what could be done with them. The first I saw was a fully polished one fitted with a carb manifold and four barrel in an EK Holden panel van. You couldn't get near the thing at shows for the people crowding around it. Nowadays it probably wouldn't draw much of a crowd like that, but people would still be attracted to something different.
Staying Ford and putting in a twin can six and turbos, show detailed, would similarly draw people to it, and give you a damn good drive in something that would weigh a lot less than the what, 1800kg that a new falcon weighs? Even with no mods it would go like the clappers.

There's plenty worse ways to spend a personal loan...

If you've already got the car that's the biggest cost right there, being an XY. Must be plenty of late model Falcons by now in the wreckers yards to pick and choose from...

As GasoLane said, this thread was peacefully sleeping for 9 years, (And XY71 have NOT been active on here since 2012), then a new-starter (or maybe a banned troll?) woke up this dinosaur thread again.

I wasted a couple of minutes reading the two pages in this thread to the bottom before I saw that the year was 2011..

Anyway, about a week ago I saw a gumtree listing for a rusted out wagon, almost naked body shell. I was looking through some of the project builds on the forum to see what XY projects (modern drivetrain) has been done. The Gumtree shell was way beyond economical repair, but I was sitting looking at if it would it be possible to splice in a complete floor pan, suspension and drivetrain from an AU, BF, FG, or even SY / SZ into that shell.

- Physically everything is possible, but another thing would be the licensing rules; There is probably a maximum percentage of a body shell and other parts allowed to be substituted / replaced before it is considered no longer the old / original vehicle.

Jay Leno garage did a floor-pan swap in one of the TV episodes on an ugly brown sedan.

West-Coast Customs (USA) did a floor-pan swap of what looked like a VZ Monaro (Australian GM) into a 70s small GM in one of their TV episodes.

And I know of a guy in Eastern states here in Australia that have done a E90 M3 floor-pan and engine swap into an early BMW 3.0 coupe

Ford have done the same when they built the Escort Cosworth vehicles in the 90s, slotting in Sierra 4x4 floor pans in the Escort shells, but that was a factory job, so didn't have the identity problem to deal with.

I haven't done anything this big yet, but in principle it only takes more time to do a big job than a small job
