Saw that just recently and it is a very good speech and well worth a listen to if you've not heard it before..

The nerd in me was shocked to read that he had died, but as mentioned pancreatic cancer is just a terrible form of cancer to have, and a very tough one to beat.

RIP Steve, from a technology point of view you helped shape the world.

How sad, he must have known it was coming, perhaps that's why he retired from Apple recently so that there would be stability in the company when he passed.

RIP Steve, you and your visionary persona will be sorely missed in the technology industry! My condolences to all family and friends.

EDIT: Why do the media have to say "... Dead at .."? It sounds terribly disrespectful IMO - dies or passes sounds a lot more respectful...

There have been some "attempts" at humour in this thread.

The next one will get a holiday.

A great man has passed away. He has family and friends and has touched the lives and done more good for the human race than everyone on AFF combined.

Show some respect.

Visionary. I'm quite sure what drove him to create the things that he has over the years contributed to shortening his life but his creations will go on enriching the lives of so many.

One of my heroes - a self made man, with a lasting legacy. His contribution to technology will not be long forgotten.

An absolute pioneer & visionary. Rest in Peace.

Very interesting movie from quite a few years back called "Pirates of Silicon Valley" gives an insight into him & the founding of Apple as well as Bill Gates & Microsoft - well worth a watch if you haven't seen it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEyrivrjAuU

Will be interesting to watch Apple over the next few months to see what happens within the company.

Thought I'd just point because it seems some may have missed this.

This thread started back on the 25th August and was a discussion on Apple as a company and it was a Android vs Apple vs Windows discussion as well. It was called "The Cult of Jobs"

Post 14 is actually the 1st post since August and as such please don't associate the comments in the previous posts as comments made after knowing his death. I say this because I have comments in posts 1 to 13 and they are definitely not things I was say in light of todays news as debating the better operating system is not respectful.

I think it's slightly misleading that the thread name was changed because it makes the people who commented on the original thread/thread name look very poor!

Back on topic though -
Deeply shocked and saddened by his death. Working in the telco industry meant that iPhones/iPads are a huge part of our work and so knowing someone who had such an influence on the world right down to my job has passed is a terrible loss.

RIP

I didn't like his products but its sad that the world lost an innovator and someone who has managed to change everyones lives in such a big way, plus a little competition is never a bad thing (Microsoft/PC fan here). So young as well, 55.

Very true, the original thread/posts could probably be deleted. They are not relevant to his passing today.

Interesting the impact he had on the telco industry. I remember when the iphone was launched in 2007 that people were laughing at Apple trying to get into the phone market. Think about what smart phones were like back then and the impact he made on the industry.

But for me the greatest products has been the computers. OSX is such a brilliant OS.

A man responsible for modern computing as we know it dies with barely a mention.

“Pretty much everything on the web uses those two things: C and UNIX,” Pike tells Wired. “The browsers are written in C. The UNIX kernel — that pretty much the entire Internet runs on — is written in C. Web servers are written in C, and if they’re not, they’re written in Java or C++, which are C derivatives, or Python or Ruby, which are implemented in C. And all of the network hardware running these programs I can almost guarantee were written in C.

“It’s really hard to overstate how much of the modern information economy is built on the work Dennis did.”

Yes, a great loss. The co-inventor of C and one of the fathers of Unix.

I have his books at home. I love the elegance of C.
