I have driven in Melbourne in the last 10 years, but only on a rental car with pre-paid E-tax and always at at least 20-30km/h under the lowest speed limit in the area as a protest (and for license preservation as I am used to looking at the road and other cars not my speedo while driving).

Fortunately it is not far to anywhere so it does not take much longer.

If E-tags were made mandatory for the gateway or logan (bris) it would cost the government many seats and maybe the balance of power.
Just look at the sunshine coast tollway......oh you can't, it was made free....
Bad news Flappist, E-Tolls will be made mandatory on all "Queensland Motorways" roads by 2011 when the Gateway duplication is finished.

And the government who capped the tolls on Queensland roads cost Queenslanders millions and extended the toll period by 6 years.

Nope, it was part of the duplication deal (Beattie) and I have a funny feeling "Queensland Motorways" aren't going to budge considering how much of a &%$@ up it was the last 2 times a politican bent the plans.

QLD motorways will do what they are told or their bridges will not have roads going to them anymore

I am wondering WHY in this age of numberplate recognition systems that can track trucks, stolen and unregistered cars in real time do we need a duplicated system with a whole other department to install, maintain and control a supersceded technology with millions wasted in wages, office rentals and auditing?

Oh that's right, GOVERNMENT.........

I absolutley 100% support cashless tolling - it should be mandatory - imagine how much smoother everything would flow. Its so easy to get an etag its not funny. I think the higher price of tolls in peak and cheaper in off peak is an interesting idea that should be explored to reduce congestion as well.

Having said all that I hate the governments policy on every new road being a toll road - we already pay through the teeth for rego/fuel ect and this is just an added expense. If I drive to the airport from where I live in Nth West Sydney I pay - $M2, $Lane Cove Tunnel, $Harbour Bridge, $ Eastern Distributer. I cant remember what the tolls are but at a guess about $14 EACH WAY.
