Another tip in this situation is one that I picked up when riding motorbikes. Dont look at what you think you are going to hit, look at where you want to go. If you see a gap, and focus on it, you are more likely to steer for it and get through it. if you look at the crashing car ahead of you, you will probably steer into it, or be less likely to steer away from it.

Another favourite of mine is LOOK AHEAD! Too many drivers focus on the tail of the car ahead, or the road in frt of thier bonnets. if you focus further ahead, you will see things coming that are easier to avoid, like the long line of brake lights, or the steaming wreck that the guy in frt of you is about to pile into because he is focusing on the road immediately in frt of him. Dont become part of someone elses accident as most of them are easily avoided.

That and make sure you leave a reasonable gap to the car in front
