i planned to move out when i was 18...

im 20 now still at home, with a considerable sum of money saved, considering im at full time uni and 3 casual jobs. plus a third of my pay goes into the fuel tank every week, another third on just other general living expenses and the last of it either gets saved or drunk...

as much as i dont enjoy life at home. its too small, cant get away from anything without going out, and then come the rules like curfews etc so that limits that as well, i just cant afford to move out. i dont want to get into a renting trap and blow all my savings on rent when i just cant afford it.

i plan to move out at the end of next year, not long 21 after uni is finished and i find myself a full time job.

Moved out at 17, rented while at uni and then bought as soon as I got full time work after graduating. I would recommend getting in to the market as soon as you can.

But...

It looks like the trend in growing to stay at home though. Reports indicate that there's a growing amount of people staying at home in to their 30's (and longer) just so they can buy everything they want and blow their expendable income without a worry. I have some mates, who like myself, moved out of home in their teens, and I have some that are 26 and still live at home and have their washing done for them...

I'd rather my independence. I couldn't ever imagine taking my gf (now wife) back to my parent's place after a date...

[edit] I just think it's cute that there is a growing population of 30+ "adults" who have been employed full time for a while, still living at home with their mum and dad... I guess they'd just argue that it's good money management because they can avoid a mortgage etc, but a lot of the time they're the ones that spend all their money each week going out and buying a new car every 6 months.

I guess it all just depends on your view on the issue and what you value Plus, it's always going to be different in each individual case depending on the situation. I understand that some people simply can't afford to leave home, but that's not what I'm talking about. I know if I was 60 and I had a son who was 30, had been working full time and all I see him do is blow his money on garbage and keep living at home, I'd be encouraging him to be wiser with his $ and give me my life back :P

I didn't move out of home....my parents did

My parents split when I was about 16, and I ended up being the only one left residing in the family home. I moved out of there when I was 18,when I got a flat with my girlfriend at the time....who later became my step-sister (we weren't seeing each other by then).

I moved out at 20 and rented for 2 years. At 22 I bought my first house. At 23 purchased my current home.

Im 30 now and married with kids. Ive five years left on my mortgage. At 35 I will be debt free.

Once debt free just have a think of how easy life will be.

moved out of mums place at 19, back in with dad at 21, started building 1st place at 22 and just moved in (now 24)

i enjoyed moving out of home with mates, but once i went back, saved enough for a deposit on a house in 6 months!

hope that i am debt free at 35, cant see any reason why i shouldn't be!!

The only thing I could suggest is make sure you get as big a deposit as you can, it makes buying a house sooooo much easier if you have at least 10% of the deposit.
Same deal, 24 and just bought a place and moving out mid-Jan.

Moved out at 16 and never went back!! Started our first business at 18 and second at 22. Sold both for a killin...Moving out young, you sink or swim! Our son 20 still lives at home and he is going to buy a rental home soon and live offa mum and dad as long as he can. We make him pay board....yeah like $50 a week covers what that boy eats but I agree with Pinkbits! They can stay as long as they want!! Love having my family round me!

The best thing about moving out will be the peace and quiet. Man I really can't wait. I'm gone as soon as I can regardless of how cheap it is to bludge it up at home.

Plus I can walk around freestyle whenever I want when I get my own house!

I'm 23, 24 in a month, and I moved out 4 months ago for the first time. And I'm moving back in a couple of months when the lease runs out.

It's a hard task getting someone to move in when it's 130 a week rent plus food for 2 people. Even when I beg them and say I will pay the phone the internet and the electricity.

So I'm moving home to save 250 a week.

I was 17 when I moved out.. went thru various rentals with mates etc..was still renting up until 20months ago when we (my wife and I) bought our first house. now 31. one thing we always wanted to do was be in our own house before kids came along. there was no way i was going to be stuck in a rental with kids.

I used to think it was an absolute joke, guys living with their parents well into their 20's, then I think if i was earning as much as I am now, and was able to still live at home I'd be able afford/save so much more.. But I'd still feel like a burden on my parents.

Its the people in their 20's that CAN afford to be living away from their parents, comfortably, and have no intention of moving out in the forseeable future, that give me the $h1ts...

I must hold the reckord so far. Moved out of home at 29. I am 34 now.

It allowed me to buy my place and pay it off, and buy 2 investement properties.

Those years set at home set me up well and truly.

21 and still at home.. im only just starting to figure my life out... just started studying at uni, because i blew off year 12 i have to pay for my bridging course up front had to take a loan out for that which is 10k add to that 4 years of HECS debt after and im not going to be looking at moving out well into my late 20's...

I dont pay board although my parents work 2 weeks on 1 off up at the prominent hill Oxiana mine and im left to look after my brother (18) and sister (17??) parents do shopping before they leave but i always end up having to buy more food before the end of the first week which is probably about $100-$150 so its not all bad but couple that with my loan repayments and trying to run a 6cyl falcon it doesnt leave to much cash left over to save,

Didn't get along with my mum so she kicked me out when I was 17 after I 'borrowed' her car to go to my yr 12 formal. Then 3 months later moved back in. Then when I was 19 she kicked me out again lol, this time I stayed out. Met my GF, done a cert IV in IT, started/failed an IT business, then I was doing night work at woolies for 2 year.

Then all of a sudden I got lucky. Earlier this year I somehow landed a good job with RailCorp by bullshiting in the interview and making up references, then bought an XR6T 2 weeks later. My GF then got a promotion and earns 50% more. And just last month we movied into our first home with more bullshitting on the loan application lol.
