I went to a specialist for mine, and including anesthetist fees I think it came to around $1200.

No way was I gonna be awake for it, hate the idea of needles being inserted into my mouth.

I had to drive and see my sister to go and buy the painkillers because I couldn't talk... on the way back I was in severe pain (couldn't take the codeine before leaving cause it makes you sleepy).

For about ten minutes I was in pure hell: I was in blazing agony and literally, no ****, surrounded by Camrys of various models all refusing to speed up and merge. Then came the two diesel shitheaps blowing smoke everywhere and climing a hill at 20 km/h.: :togo:

If there's one time to get a speeding fine, it was yesterday! I can safely say I've seen hell fellas and its not pretty. Try and avoid going there!

Anyone else has their wisdoms out?
I had 6 teeth out almost a month ago. Four wisdom teeth plus two at the front (getting fixed appliances in about 2 weeks). Pain was easy to handle and I didn't take the pain killers much. 2 days after the operation, I was at Telstra Dome shouting at the umpires during the Geelong V StKFC match. I take the attitude that the mind is the most powerful weapon of all. I chose to block the pain out and it worked sometimes. AFF hypnotized me.

My anaesthetist charged 80 bucks for the pre-surgery consultation which consisted of, "Hi, I'll stick a needle in your arm and put you to sleep. Any questions? Ok...bye!" 10 seconds got him 80 bucks. That comes to 480 dollars a minute which equates to $28800 an hour. Talk about bludging!

But I dealt with it ok. Was eating sandwiches 2 days afterwards...egg and bacon.

Every time I go to the dentist he asks me to book in to have them done. Everytime I say no, stories like yours confirm this belief

Army made me get mine out, even tho' there was nothing wrong with them. The poor bugger that was pulling them had 6 of us to do in a day, and I was last.
All done under general. Woke up with a mouth full of tampons, dislocated jaw, 2 big bruses on my chest where she kneeled to get enough leverage and no feeling on the right hand side of my mouth.
Kicked us out of Hospital the next morning. 2 days later, they made me do a 15km CFA (walk 15km with 30kg of pack and webbing in 2.5 hours followed by run, dodge, jump course, in Darwin) and wondered why I didn't complete it and ended up back in hospital!
6 years later and still only have 30% feeling in my tounge and gums.
But by all means, don't let that stop you from getting it done....

I haven't had wisdoms out but I had my 12yo molars removed. That night there was a mozzie in my room & it landed on my cheek. (without thinking -->) SLAP!

Don't EVER slap your face after having teeth out!

I had a tooth out last Wednesday, and Im still on painkillers. I have no idea why its till sore, the wound itself is clean and looking good, but the gum around the teeth surrounding it looks like its come away from my teeth. Mine had an Absyss on it, and he broke the root off, and had to dig it out. My jaw bone fells the worst though, like Ive been hit with a sledgehammer and thats from like 5 days ago.

Heres the story of my gf getting her wisdoms out.

She went into hospital to get them done. They knocked her out completely.
I came in to pick her up, she got told she could leave whenever she wanted.

Dr prescribed nurofen.

The next three days were full of vomiting, absolute pain, lots of bleeding and I vaguely remember something happening with the stitches.

I've got two on my left side that are out completely, but 2 on my right are half in/out, which I think means I should go get them out.

But god damn after seeing what happened to her. And nurofen as a pain killer - what a joke.

On the other hand I've heard of people having them out in the chair, and being fine the next day.

My experience was not as bad as a lot of people by the sounds of it. I had to get all 4 out under general anesthetic as mine were pretty badly compacted, literally growing into the molars at 90degrees to the way they should have been (looked cool on the x-rays but not so cool in reality).

I don't remember being in that much pain afterwards, the worst part was having to squirt warm salty water into the sockets where the teeth used to be 3 times a day to avoid infection. Had to go to a specialist to get them out so maybe he was a bit more skilled/gentle than a dentist might've been.

I got it done during the holidays and dad had me back out working in the paddock after about 4 days, personally I'd have prefered 5.

i had two impacted wisdom teeth pulled out in the chair. within 2 hours i was driving a truck with no problems apart from customers having no idea what i was saying due to a mouthfull of cotton/blood and a hell of a lot of swelling. the dentist was worried as i have very long and hooked roots but the only time he had trouble was when he stopped because i was giggling away when he was pulling the teeth, (i love the feeling of the teeth tearing away from the gums when pulled). considering i had never been to a dentist untill 3 years ago (at 27) i have had a good run from them.

Apparently when i woke up after the surgery i was swearing like crazy too but it felt like was tripping !!!

Trust me; the wake up is the fun part!

I have to have mine taken out and they are going to "crack" my jaw to get them out. It is either let a professional do it or the teeth will do it themselves.

I am putting it off as long as possible. They keep coming up and going back down and I am not in any pain. Chicken to go have it done after all the horror stories I have heard.

hrmm... dont know where the rest of my post went..
I had one removed by some dodgy dentist a year ago, all i went in there for was a check up, i guess he just wanted some extra coin, and i was in the mood for some teeth pullin'. He only jabbed me twice to numb me up but I still felt most of it, but it was just a dull pain.
The worst part is hearing the cracking, and having the knees and elbows in my chest as he was trying to get some leverage to pull the tooth out. The dentist managed to smash my tooth, and had to go digging to pull the rest of it out. I hated the taste of the stitches as they dissolved, i ended up ripping them out which hurt like a you know what.

I am one of the lucky ones by reading through some of the stories in this old thread.

Well, Im a dental assistant and I've had all 4 wisdom teeth out while awake and I'm now on my second round of braces.
Id have to say the braces are worse than the wisdom teeth.
Had the first one taken out by a general dentist (my boss at the time), 1 day off of work, no worries.
Had the remaining 3 removed by an oral surgeon as the dentists I worked for didnt want to touch them with a ten foot pole due to the lower ones being impacted and the risk of nerve damage.
Saw the oral surgeon who prescribed 2 valium before we started, then many injections to numb me off then out came the 3 teeth within 45 minutes.
Recovery time was about 24 hours while loaded up to the eyeballs on Panadeine Forte, then a nasty bruise on the right hand side of my face for about a week and no soids for about 3 or 4 days.....nooooo i love my food!
The braces on the other hand are a complete pain in the *** due to the constant tightening and not being able to eat for days after wards due to "bruised" teeth.
Not that I should be complaining cos I get it all for mates rates and the braces are purely for cosmetic reasons....teeth really werent that crooked to begin with.
Moral of the story, not everyones dental experience is a nightmare but toothache definately is, so just suck it up and get them removed. Its something you only have to do once if you take good care of the rest of your teeth!

Ok. Well its nearly 8.00am. I'm at work. Cranky, tired, and in no mood for bull$^it. I'm sick of getting no damned sleep, and I can't even drink my coffee. The sooner these effin things are gone the better gggrrrrrrrr. I hate the dentist but right now, enough is enough. I'll do whatever I have to now. :

My Dad had 6 teeth removed before he got his braces, and refused to have any painkillers, as he was more scared of the needle than the teeth coming out.
His dentist refused to do it, until my Grandfather stepped in and said that if he didn't want painkillers, then he could suffer.

I had one of my teeth growing in the middle of the roof of my mouth, and it would have been too hard to pull it into line with braces, so it got pulled and my other teeth got moved around to cover up for it. It was the second most painful thing ever.

The most painful was the bridge I had cemented to the top row of teeth to stretch my top jaw, so that the orthodontist had enough room to move all my teeth around.
It had a barrel in the middle that had to be turned with a key twice a day, which then pushed my jaw wider over the span of about 2 weeks.

Braces were nothing compared to that! My entire face ached constantly for about a month.
Mum had to be the one to turn the key because it made Dad cry just watching how much pain it caused me each time.

Well D-day is approaching. I'm all booked in to get them removed tomorrow. Apparently I'll be staying in overnight after the op, and won't be too 'personable' for a few days lol.

On a side note, how the hell am I supposed to go without water for 11hours.... I drink like a bloody fish. 12pm tonight until 11am tomorrow with no food or water, I'll feel like a dried out apricot hahaha

You'll feel much better for it after they're gone.

Read my post earlier in this thread (post 4 or somewhere near there) for my experience. You won't believe it, but it's all true.

JUST had my first wisdom tooth pulled out 5 minutes ago!
All 4 of them are through but my top one was causing pain in my bottom molar so I had it extracted.
And no pain at all. Had it done in the chair under local. Was a bit uncomfortable with the cracks and pressure but besides that im sitting in front of the computer like nothing has happened. Might be a different story in a couple of hours.

Good bit of thread mining, but hey, a good topic!

I had mine out just over 3 years ago. Two were impacted, and two never gave me any bother at all. Trouble is, when I did get bothered by it I couldn't open my jaw wide enough to chomp food, so it was a bit annoying.

Was given the option of a GA or a local - GA was going to be two grand or so, and having it done in the chair would set me back about half that. Having a morbid fear of any kind of dentistry ("is it safe?"), I elected to save some money and have it done under a local.

Boy was it fun! Seriously. I had two injections on the outside of the gum near the offending tooth, and another couple on the inside. So that's EIGHT injections. They hurt only a little, but what really smarted were the two injections into the roof of my mouth, which was the most uncomfortable part. I was left for about five minutes and then the dentist (or to be more accurate, Orthadontic Surgeon) came back and asked me how I felt. I tried to speak, but my mouth wasn't listening to my brain because what came out couldn't possibly have been a language. We laughed - it broke some more ice.

And so he got to work. The worst part was the suction and the taste of blood as he hacked away at my gums. The best part was feeling him cracking each of my wisdoms in two and not feeling any pain at all! It was all over in about 20 minutes, and he made me write down my home address on a piece of paper so I could give it to the taxi driver to take me home. Then he gave me a script for Coproxamol (also known as horse tranquilisers as far as I'm concerned - I hear you can't get the stuff now... they were magic) and before I went home I popped into the chemist to get them.

Swelled up a bit for the first couple of days, no bruising, and within four days I was able to eat more than just jelly. Took a week and a bit before I could conquer a steak, but all in all I was very happy with the result. Took a week off work too, which was nice.

My wife had hers done under GA and it took her 2 full weeks to recover - looked like she'd been in a fight with Mike Tyson to boot. Hence why I took the option of having it done under a local.

Still don't like dentists, though... hasn't cured my fear of them, but it was a thousand dollars well-saved, I think.

I'll just stick by my usual not going near dentists (not that I've ever had any probs with them never even a filling)

Had all 4 of mine pulled out a few years ago, i was shocked to see how big and long the buggers are! I went local, the op itself wasnt that bad, but yeah once the anasthetic wore off, it was a bit painful. Was chewing tampons for the majority of the day, and doing warm salt water washes as often as i could. Jelly and yogo was my best mate, the majority of my working day is spent on the phone so i got 2 weeks off work, as i still couldnt speak properly after a week.

My G/F is about to get hers pulled, im going to take a week off work to look after her. She is going general, not local. Hopefully she wont go through the same as me!!!!

It seems you either get a fairly smooth removal, with some returning to work a few days later, or you kinda visit hell.
