not old fashioned at all, it`s always good to talk to people with manners, a lot of young people just don`t have a clue, even walking down the street a lot of the youngies swearing their heads off yelling over each other even as older people are walking past them, or trying to get around them as they often won`t move for anyone, their whole demeanor is very disrespectful at times, obviously looking at posts in this thread there are a lot of respectful well mannered younger folk, but there are a hell of a lot that need a re education sadly..

yes mate, I know they are trained that way.

That's why I re-educate them, often I take a lengthy opportunity to explain to them why any intelligent person will see it as a form of manipulation at trying to make us pliable, to close the sale by "bonding" with me on a first names' basis.

I present to them the case that they blew it on "hello" and that that I hope they are recording the call?

For me, that blows your assertion that it is "the basics of building a relationship with the customer" and also exemplified by the majority of responses in this thread.

If you get a manager with NFI about manners to dictate call center policy then you simply breed ill mannered call center staff, whether their fault or not.

That's my view and I am sticking with it.

The older couple across the road from us have always been Mr and Mrs Jones. We are old enough to have kids out of highschool; Mr Jones was a teacher of our kids through primary school and maybe it started there where he was always simply "Mr Jones". I knew his first name but it kind of felt disrespectful using it and I stuck with "Mr. Jones" and "Mrs Jones"
Then unfortunately he passed away this year.
Now we address Mrs Jones with her first name and talk about her husband using his first name also.
Its all good, but it is interesting how this all changed when he died.

Probably because he stopped being an authority figure and became a lost friend.

Yeah sounds about right.
Certainly, all of a sudden it didn;t feel 'enough' just refering to him as Mr Jones.

I'm 40 so I'm in a similar demographic to the op

I was raised the same and my wife the same also. And we have raised our kids the same.

Rule of thumb for me is until the person in question corrects me it's Mr & Mrs etc, so much so my wife's grandmother has a friend every one calls him by his first name but as he was once my wife's neighbour she has always called him Mr... and as I and my inlaws all new him before they were friends we all call him mr... The trouble for us is he now says look you can call me by my first name but after him being mr for 15+ in my case and 30+ years for the inlaws it isn't a change that's happening quickly, besides, it still seems odd to have nan and bill nan and mr... Seems to roll off the toung better

That said though at our old house we had a lovely couple they were around the same age as my parents and they quickly asked us to call them by their Christian names, when my kids were born they were like the 3rd set of grand parents (the best people you could ever have living next to you) and they wouldn't hear of the kids calling them Mr & Mrs so they are the only exceptions to my kids

Last Sunday, arvo visiting a Mate on here, I was in a small shopping center and getting into my car when this young bloke driving a set of green P's walked out a shop with a young lady in tow.
I watched with a smile on my face as he opened the passengers door and handed her into the car.
His smile changed instantly to realisation when the Ute fired up just a few feet away with that ominous squealing noise.
I thought to myself, I've never opened the door of the Ute for a female...... never had one in the car.

While the basic Ford Six was code named Barra, the Turbo version clearly deserved its very own moniker – again enter Gordon Barfield.
We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

Burnout, My XH ute only has a key lock on the drivers side door, and I don't have keyless entry (remote)

Seriously brother - get yourself a female, they're great fun! LOL!

They'll keep you guessing - just like a car!

I was brought up old school, so manners are deeply embedded into my mind.

However, i am a bit tit-for-tat. So I express manners/give respect if its earnt.

But my rule is always to apply my mannerisms on first encounter, and then go from there as to how to personally judge whether theyve earnt it based on reaction thereon in.

I wish more people my age were like this, I'm 24 was brought up exactly the same.

When I have kids I intend on bringing them up this way to show some respect to others but it really does seem like its dying, as is holding a door open or offering a seat.

I'd say the OP is very old fashioned because even his spelling is correct
It would be nice if more people nowadays were like they were in the old days, I was also brought up to be polite to others especially those older than myself and have taught my 2 boys the exact same manners. I still have people I hardly know tell me how polite and well mannered my boys are and they are now young men at 19 and 23 y.o. The way society has gone I find quite sad at times, even today while I was waiting outside a store for my wife there was a young couple with 2 very young children in a stroller, one of the children stood up and accidentally knocked over a drink which had been put on top of the stroller, the foul language that was used and directed at the kids was absolutely ridiculous under the circumstances, but is unfortunately all too common these days :(

Good manners cost you nothing but get you a long way in life. This is the quote my old English grandfather always reinforced in me and I never let my children forget it. Well done to those who are doing what I consider the right thing to do!
