interestingly the US equivalent of this is based on fuel consumption, not CO2 emissions.

Light truck (Ranger) target for 2025 is 38.31 US mpg which works out at 6.1 l/100

yeah, good luck with that! that's about what my 1.5 focus achieves

Thanks for mentioning this, Whitlam’s 25% tariff reduction (all in one hit mind you) was insane and nonsensical. Driven by ideological spite towards the US auto companies, despite them employing thousands of Australians?

Not to mention the Button Car Plan which allowed for the demise of Nissan, Ford Eagle Farm, Homebush etc? And that was under a far more moderate Labor give than the one we have now.

Not a chance Holden was going to stay with Ford gone.

My Puma does 6.7 ltrs/ 100 km almost all short km urban trips
It’s drops way down on freeway trips but they are one every 14 days

Except I weigh more than the scooter does so it'll probably only do 30km/h and use more fuel than my old shitbox V8 Caprice

Might join the rest of the riders of these things and do uber eats deliveries in Melbourne CBD.

No, it wasn't but calling them out (Hockey) didn't help.

Anyway, my point was more that the policies aren't crazy and nothing new in the world. Don't know why we resist change even when it's a good thing. Getting more efficient cars is a good thing for the market.

Protectionist industries are inefficient. That said, the world is changing and with the numerous unequal FTAs signed, protectionist can be good. But that's to fix a problem signing poor FTAs.

This is a really good point. It's the end of an era and I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel to find interest in many new cars for sale. Perhaps Cuba is right?!

Time to stockpile XG vans for the business lol

As much as I'm a Ford fan, the VF2 is a bloody good car. A lot of the features would keep it current even today.

Yep totally. In my case I'd look for a nicely kept VF1 MY14 with the E85 option and then run E85 to nix most of the fossil fuel. Doing so, the whole house and transport energy would then be almost totally non-evil. Perhaps in future brew some E100 myself, but that is a series of hoops with govco, approved spaces and paying a 10K or so bond... guess I miss the chem lab...

Gradual change. Got the Terry on E10 now...

No. That was Victoria and it was removed as states can't collect a tax that was replacing a federal tax.

Yep, and Mike Hudema. What’s their financial gain pushing these proposed measures, as nothing these lot do is without financial benefit.

This bodes very poorly for Ford, with 80% (approximately) of their sales in Australia being Ranger and Everest. I wonder how long Ford US decide to pull the plug on Australia’s market.

The government want to push the citizenry to drive the cheap, dangerous junk coming out of China (think BYD).

Well it’s not technically a “new” tax just an adjustment on existing LCT…but in practice it really is a new tax on hybrid vehicles.

That's the LCT because efficiency standards have been tightened to 3.5 litres/100 down from the exemption of up to 7 litres/100.

It was asked before as well. Sorry, my comment wasn't directed at you specifically. People don't read enough and jump to conclusions too quickly.

It's been a long time since the definition of fuel efficient vehicle was looked at and it's good that it has been adjusted to keep up with the technology available in the market.
