Sydney to Melbourne in 3 hours? Impossible, you say, but with Australia’s proposed new high-speed vehicle it looks like this could be a reality.

Hassell A-HSV / Hassell

The Hassell Company, specialising in cutting edge vehicle design is proposing a new double-decker bullet train that will have the capacity to travel up to 400 kilometres an hour.

Hassell claims that the train was “Inspired by the brut lines of the iconic Australian speed machine the 1960s HK Monaro”.

Dubbed the A-HSV (Australian High Speed Vehicle), the train would not only transport passengers between Australia’s capital cities and main landmarks at super high speeds, but also reduce carbon emissions.

The hope is that with the option of travelling using the A-HSV, people would be less inclined to travel by car or plane between long distances.

Hassell maintains that this was very much in mind with the design, stating “The A-HSV presents an alternative low-carbon, safe mode of transport for future travel between Australian capital and regional cities”.

For those who turn their nose up at the idea of travelling by train, don’t be too hasty in judging the A-HSV. The train will offer unparalleled high speed luxury travel never before seen in Australia.

“Pioneering a new concept in the way Australians commute and travel, the double-decker train would offer the choice of modern, spacious, open plan commuter seating or private berths for business meetings or luxury travellers” said a Hassell spokesperson.

It is said that the A-HSV will rival Asia’s bullet trains both in design and speed, while keeping Aussie taste in mind, a company spokesperson stating that “Hassell has designed the A-HSV to be responsive to the Australian context.”

I agree with one guy though, you can fly for less than $100 usually and whats that, an hour flight?

True, but if it would mean no wasted 1hr checkin, plus the other airport rorts, I'd give it a chance!

Flying used to be quicker years ago than what it is now - someone else could confirm, but don't they run slower airspeeds now to conserve fuel?

The main benefit to flying is there is a Mel-syd departure every 30min.

And it's a 80min trip, hardest thing is getting through security in the morning with all the business travelers, you dont need to stand in a line to check in anymore just do it online and go to the gate..

And then they woke up and changed hands.

They struggle to do Southern Cross to Bendigo in 2 hours on the new "fast trains" which they spent $40,000,000 on which ended up saving me a total of 3 minutes between my station and SC.

They can only have 4 carriages on the fast trains, so barely anyone can fit on and they only run one Bendigo train every hour, and then it gets stuck behind Metro trains so it can't go fast anyway for the first 1/4 of the trip.

Plus the seats fail to accomodate anyone who is 6 foot plus, without awkward leg touching if you're in the 4 seaters or kicking the back of someone elses feet in front of you if you're in a 2 seater. Who wants to sit on that for three hours?

If they can't do Bendigo to Melbourne right, whats the chances of Melbourne to Sydney? They can't even properly sort out VLine and Metro trains let alone build some super fast thing going interstate.

Rail fails.

Sounds like the VFT (Very Fast Train) all over again, the VTF was proposed back in the days of Bob Hawke. The VFT business case didn't make sense and considering the dramatic reduction in airfare costs with airline deregulation I think cancelling the VFT was a good call.

Again, it will not happen...

Wont happen. They would need to lay new separate track. It would take them years and more money then it will make them.
Wonder what the braking distance is from 400km/h in a train.

But damo is the Bendigo - Melbourne one an AHSV. Because I'm sure if they are going to call it luxurious they will have a nicer interior then what you are describing.

Won't happen in my lifetime.

We don't have the population to justify the expense, we are all to reliant on cars and discount airfares to get around and when it is finished it will cost 30% more than budgeted, and will be empty because a ticket will cost twice as much as the petrol to drive it yourself or a flight from a budget carrier.

The bureaucrats running it will be at their board meeting after a month scratching their heads wondering what they did wrong...

Show on telly the other week mentioned a superfast train in ??Sth Korea?? and its construction (megastructures maybe), train itself, tracks and bridges etc. I cant remember the stopping distance, but it reflected some decent stopping power anyway.

Personally, Id prefer a fast train than a plane.

Was it called the KTX?? That is what they call their bullet train.

Just looked up the stats. 13,560 kw, gets to top speed in a little over 6 minutes and needs only 2.5minutes or 6.4km to stop.... stopping distance is impressive actually.

That is what I'm referring to on the Bendigo - Melbourne line, it has the "first class" seats of the old model train in economy, but they're way too close together.

Im not positive it was Sth Korea, Im only sure they mentioned them at least. Im also fairly sure the French supplied the tech and vast input to the project. They also mentioned the ??German?? train that hit the bridge when the two piece wheel separated derailing the train, so they went with a one piece design and modded the truck to aid in vibration and noise reduction. Oh wait, I also recall a mod to the truck as it got a speed wobble in its first trial run. Its the one where they built a bridge over a freeway, without closing the freeway.

I didnt pay enough attention to be aware if it was TGV, KTX or any other combo of letters mate. Chances are I was drifting in and out of sleep with the ads etc.
