Well it might be if there was an actual sign between the brackets and the 2

assuming it is implying multiplication then 48 / 2 * (9 + 3) = 48 / 2 * 12 = 24 * 12 = 288.

LOL oh ****...bodmas.....division first....

I read it as 44 / (2*(9+3)) = 44 / 2*27 = 44 / 54 = 0.8

Order of operations
Brackets first, then do the multiply between 2 and 9, no sign is always multiply.
Then 48/24=2

ok so...on the calculator

48/2(9+3) = 288

48/(2(9+3)) = 2

This is a sad day for me...to think I passed eng maths at uni

Because on another forum I visit this simple maths question has started WW3

I think it must be 288 but an army of self proclaimed "clever people" say it has to be 2. At the moment a poll is sitting at 53% for 288.

48 not 44 and + not x

so...

48 / 2(9+3) = 48 / 2(12) = 48 / 24 = 2

Thats my final answer. Lock it in eddie...

EDIT: But if you work left-to-right after the bracket, you get 288!

48 / 2(9+3)
= 48 / 2 (12)
= 24 (12)
= 288

I think, depending on your age, that the answer will vary.
I seem to remember my dad telling me it was BOMDAS, which would make the multiplication before the division, therefore the answer would be 2.
But I learnt it from school as BODMAS, which would put the division before the multiplication, and therefore the answer would be 288.
As a final ruling, my calculator (TI 89 Titanium) thinks BODMAS wins.

Hrmm, unless someone is going on BOMDAS, not BODMAS - which is possible, because school has changed a lot...oh stuff it - I left school 12 years ago...
