Default New FG wins 5 star safety rating

Just watched the news and the FG range is first big Aussie made car to win a safety rating on par with the Mercedes C Class and other top range European imports

THE new Ford Falcon has just earned the world's highest safety ranking.

The FG Falcon scored a five-star result in the latest round of tests for the Australian New-Car Assessment Program, matching the benchmark set by luxury cars such as the Mercedes C-Class.

It's the first Australian-made car to earn a five-star ranking.

Test results will not be announced until Wednesday after a recent series of crash tests and safety assessments of Ford's new local flagship.

Apart from the traditional frontal-impact test, any five-star contender must also pass a side-impact test. And it must have seat-belt warnings for every passenger space.

From the start of this year, any car awarded the top ranking by ANCAP must have ESP stability control fitted.

Ford is likely to make a major fuss over the five-star success, as the rival VE Commodore only has a four-star ranking. The locally made Toyota Camry and Aurion also rate four stars, the same as the now-dead Mitsubishi 380.

Full results of the ANCAP testing should also include the Falcon's rating for both child occupant and pedestrian safety, which are now taking a higher priority in safety scoring worldwide.

Ford have been criticised for not fitting curtain airbags as standard, but what most don't know is in a side impact of approx 55km/h to an FG will almost certainly result in the occupants walking away uninjured.

While there are now curtain airbags on XT and G6, they do have side thorax and head airbags which would have helped the 5star rating. Well done Ford.

Fantastic work - good work Ford.
EDIT: Some reports are suggesting that Holden will ask for a new test with its 6 airbag Commodore, but I doubt that those will do much seeing how compromised the front passenger cell is by the short front overhang. As we can also see proven by Ford, curtain airbags don't seem to make much of a difference.

Can't help but feel a sense of 'told you so' on this one....it was pretty clear the FG would get 5 stars so its a bit of an anti-climax, but good on Ford anyway.

I would assume this test is for the XT without curtain bags because it is the top selling model....caradvice were suggesting it was the top end curtain equiped models only but that doesn't seem right to me......

You are right FordFella about the VE...one night i obviously had too much time on my hands and went ferriting around the net and dug up the raw scores for the camry/aurion and VE in their ancap tests. Wierdly the VE has worse lower leg injury for the driver than a VZ...(and hence earlier models back to VT i would say). The difference is minor that is true, but you need to understand the full requirements for 5 stars. ANCAP says you get your ranking based on overall score, BUT, 5 stars carries a bunch of other requirements. In addition to ESP, beltminders etc., to get 5 stars you have to score a '5 star score' in EACH INDIVIDUAL TEST AREA for occupant safety PLUS pass the side pole test.

Many cars out there don't get 5 stars because they don't want to jump through every hoop....they are still safe cars but might fall down in one area or another (Territory is an example, its about a 4.5 star car....)

The VE most likely will never get 5 stars even with the curtains standard and the side pole test (assuming it passes that)...the VE would either need to be redesigned RE front impact (short overhang anyone??) or have a knee bag etc fitted (like Mondeo, other euro fords).

The camry WAS tested in a pole test (afaik) but didn't pass to 5 star level....hence toyota never submitted an Aurion for this test when it was tested (they are the same car in effect).

The FG getting 5 stars in base form proves what good chassis engineering can do....i'd still get the curtain airbags for rear occupants etc, but this proves that for the driver you don't even need them. Good work Ford i say.

Don't think the ute has been tested yet. Using basic logic (dangerous i know) the ute would stay a 4 star in base form (no standard side airbags), so wouldn't pass the pole test. BUT, in theory, the side airbag models would be 5 stars since they are just the front of the sedan really.

It is worth noting that crash design is very complex...the absence of a rear of the car in the utes case could change the crash performance substantially, so my comments have to be taken with a grain of salt.....

It's good news for Falcon, but when you look at the ANCAP website and the list of cars with 5 stars to date, it's pretty evident that the local industry has been lagging behind the world in terms of safety standards.

As stated, the ANCAP score is good news, however I don't think we will see an uplift in sales because most of the popular small and mid sized cars are already 5 stars.

See your point Dave....except it ignores the fact that neither the commodore or aurion (by far the two biggest competitors for the FG) have 5 stars. In additoin, many of those cars quoted (particularly the small/light cars) are not 5 stars accross the line up. If the car ANCAP tested was an XT, then FG is 5 star standard (except LPG...no ESP hence 4 stars). This is an important point i think.

Have to agree overall that the local manufacturers needed to lift their game....no necessarily to build safe cars but to realise the value of the ANCAP scores. ANCAP does simple limited tests, much less than manufacturers, so a good rating doesn't mean the car is the safest out there.....

The Overhang won't comprimise the safety very little or at all, the Front of a VE is very close in design and construction (more so then the FG) to mercs And BMWS...

Well done Ford. Lets hope this will be an international eye opener to Aussie built cars.

Just because a car scores 5 stars, doesn't mean its safer then a 4 star.

Just watched a test between a (5 star) Fiat 500, and an Audi Q7. Now as obvious as it might be the the SUV will come out better, watching the slow-mo replays shows the drivers head (of the Fiat 500) rolling off the inflated (steering wheel) airbag and smashing into the window sill....
