I agree. The start line accident had me yelling at the screen to get him out of there.

I think the worst was when the other driver was trying to turn the car over and all the officials were standing around like idiots.

It was painful to watch when he realised it was too late.. the body language was just so obvious.

70's was a dangerous time to be racing.

Thats just amazing.... a fitting tribute... Its incredible how far rescue personal have come in the last 30 years... From suits & tie..., to full race/fireproof suits... Certainly very lumpy throat... particuarly from seeing Senna...... I used to stay up late and watch the F1 all the time back then...

A very emotional video. As Martyvan said, safety has come a long way. That other driver trying to turn the car over was certainly a hero, even though the driver in the car died. It shows that despite the huge on-track rivalry, drivers still look out for each other. A human life is far more important than an on-track result.

Very emotional video. Some greats in that list as well, though I can't remember seeing Phil Hill's name, (I think it was him, the only driver to win the title while deceased). To be perfectly honest, I didnt really want to go back through the video to check. At the movies it all well and good, but when it's real, and to see real human emotions, its a different story. I pray that all drivers who have died behind the wheel do Rest in Peace.

It was horrible to see that offical get run over as he ran to help a driver, it was very disturbing when he got flung about.

Grand Prix racing was incredibly dangerous, with often gruesome results. I've got alot of respect for guys like Jackie Stewart that really championed driver safety for so many years.

Very sad (and frustrating) what happened to Roger Williamson at Zandvoort after suspension failure in only his second ever grand prix race in 1973. The drivers and most of the officials figured David Purley (the guy trying to save Roger) was the driver of the burning car, so they continued the race.

It was right at the end of qualifying at the Belgian GP at Zolder.
Jochen Mass had done his lap and was coming in, Gillies had has his big argument with Didier Pironi at the last GP and had something to prove.
He always was a hot head.

Unfortunately he clipped Jochen Mass as you saw.

I can still remember the night of Senna's accident. Sitting up late to see if he could get his first finish since his Adelaide victory the previous year. As soon as the red flag was brought out, we all knew what had happened.

Luckily a lot has changed since then in terms of safety.

Luckily communication has improved a lot since then too. Although after Monaco the other week, it leaves one wondering.

Oh... how sad it is, just remembering the Ratzenberger crash again. Then the Senna crash soon after that. I watched F1 religiously back then and saw both crash to their deaths live. 1994 was a bad year for F1. I stopped watching F1 completely for more than 2 years after Senna died. Took me another year after that before I could finally watch a F1 race, though it was through half closed eyes. Still.. it's not the same as before. I had a lump in my throat watching that, particularly at the end and remembering 1994 again. But some of the old footage was so so sad.

As they say.. you live fast, you die young. They perished doing something they loved. R.I.P. all.

I just read all the comments that were with that video, and I can't believe some people. Two quotes off there:

I wouldn't mind if those two people who made the comments were taken out of the gene pool. They can go to hell. All these drivers were legends, and nobody deserves to die, particularily doing something they love. San Marino 1994 was truly a black day for motorsport. May those drivers rest in peace.

This crash also had a huge effect on my enjoyment of F1 to this day!

The weekend following his death I was a pitcrew in gokarting for a mate at a clubday
at the Bunbury city kart club and as we had a minutes silence for Ayrton and Roland
I saw grown men inc me shed a tear!

While there is a months worth of reading on the subject online HERE is enough to tell me it was nothing more than a Tragic accident! Nothing to do with steering column breakage IMO!

As the blue sign lines up with the lower telemetry box you can see the rear of the car step out from what I suspect is bottoming out! A theory also put forward by Shumi when it happened!

i saw this the other day with mixed reactions. heartbreaking, yes. it was a good tribute i think, but i am not sure if it is a good excuse to show that gore such as the charred driver and also the marshall with the extinguisher who got ripped to shreds after getting hit.

to me those 2 shots alone aren't giving respect to either of these 2 (3including the driver who copped the extinguisher in the head) guys who lost their lives, or to their family and to the relatives who are still living.
