Default Car tips up...

Hello,

I just watched a video on the internet and it had these cars on a drag racing track that instantaneously accelerated at a high speed
But when it first started, the front tires lifted off the ground,

What is this manuver called? And how do you do it?

It's called a wheel stand

Those don't want to do it, they have to. It's not safe and slows the car down!

Your have your seat too far back and the weight distribution causes this

Try moving your body as far back as posible in the drivers seat, if not try taking off from the rear seat.

This is correct. For more front wheel lift, try adjusting your seat back rest so far down that you are actually looking at the roof when you drive. Also wearing your baseball cap backwards aids in additional weight distribution to the back. Helps gets the wheels off the ground easier. Just ask any VB-VT driver.. the ones with the "P" (Professional) plates on the windscreen seem to know this trick more so than any other out there.

Buy some really big subs and put them in the boot the extra weight in the rear is likly to set the balance of the car off so the front is more likly to lift. Also another thing you can try is facing your exahust tip to the sky so when you accelerate the pressure generated pushes down on the back wheels and makes the front lift right up. You may need some high comp pistons to do this I recomend some 700:1 compression ratio pistons.

if the car is low powered this technique needs to be modified. put your seat as far forward as possible until your right up against the steering wheel. as you put your foot to the floor, hold up the seat adjustment leaver so your seat rolls quickly on the rails all the way back and hits the stops with huge force. the momentum will cause the car to rock backwards and take off on the rear wheels.

soo... by doing this would it give the car faster acceleration? which is why i saw em accelerating so fast?

Just pull back really really hard on the steering wheel when you hit the loud pedal. Its just like a push bike...

Don't listen to these guys they are leading you astray...

The easiest way to do it for a beginner is to put the car in first, hold the revs right up at about 7000rpm then dump the clutch AND in the same motion quickly shift the gearstick into reverse. The sudden adjustment from forward to backwards momentum will lift those front wheels up easy.

On a more serious note, most road cars won't even get close to doing a wheel stand - because the tyres will lose grip and spin if you take off too hard. A serious drag car - from modified sedan, to doorslammer, funny car or top fuel will be able to do a wheel stand because it has:
A) Alot of power
B) Heaps of grip due to big, fat, grippy specialised race tyres on the drive axle - almost always the rear.

On a highly modified drag car, you'll also see the body twist as the tailshaft turns the diff with such force that one side of the diff will be pushed downwards.

A lower powered example would be a motorbike, because the weight at the front is relatively low, and the power of the bike vs the weight is much better than regular cars. A car is much harder to wheel stand as with the engine up front, and the gearbox about halfway along in a rear driver, that's alot of weight up front to force skyward

So the drag cars accelerate very quickly because the balance of power, grip and gearing enables it.

I've heard you can do it in some vans and utes if you put enough weight in the back to unbalance it.

You can also do it on a push bike..

Also, try "flooring" a frontwheel drive in reverse ensuring rear (in this case, front) tyres are running 52psi helium. This method also requires the front seat to be moved as further forward as possible and baseball cap to the front.

wheelstand checklist-

1: Make sure car has leaf springs with Caltracs/style bars or a ladder bar set up.

2: Replace front guards and bonnet with fibreglass items.

3: Add engine of rather large proportions ie. 450+ci

4: Add nitrous of rather large proportions to that engine ie 500+ shot.

5: or Buy a Cortina and put 350+ HP in the bay and then you'll lift the front.

In the 70s there was a vw beetle that ran at Fishermens Bend drag strip, it was called the Midvale Motors VW i think. They hadto have someone sit on the front of it just to be able to drive it around the pits. fibreglass front panels work a treat for weight distribution.

hasha yes iv seen one of my mates do this in a van, get all ur fattest friends to sit in the back, jab the accelerator a couple times to get the car rockin forward and back then nail it and u should get the front up in the air and a few front wheel bounces, and probly some laughs aswell :P

Wasn't there a drag car in the 60s or something with a plexiglass floor so he could see where he was going whilst he did the whole 1/4 mile wheel standing?

I believe that was the Hemi underglass, engine was in the back.
