Bought it cause I wanted it. Plus it drove nice and has good fuel economy.

I have not bought yet but I am doing my homework and plan to buy within the yr, I have eagerly awaited the arrival of the new Diesel Territory as it was one of two main consideration's.
And the foremost importance for me is economy/size.

I doubt I will ever buy a new car, but no car I buy at this stage will ever be for its economy.
I want a car with decent size, power, and doesn't look crappo.

My old man is starting to look at cars once again seeing that his is 11 years old, and fuel economy is absolutely irrelevant in his purchase. He wants size and safety first and foremost - their VB/C Commodore Wagon was written off Grand Final night 1987 after a drunken sod (.165) ran up the back of them in his own 70s Fairlane.

Had they been in a small car, it is likely they would have been killed...

Im assuming when you say "new" youre not necessarily talking about a brand new car. So ill say no i didnt. I want to buy a car for 2 reasons; Ford & V8.

i think it depends on your situation,some people only need for cheap transport which is fine like my mother,she has no interset in cars at all but wants cheap rego/tires/fuel and nothing else matters and this rule applies to most people nowdays.then there are people who are more pasionate about there cars who want something individual/exicting and who will happily spend the money to have the experience.

I would prefer to use the least amount of fuel possible just because I drive so much but no Ii prefer performance and comfort over economy.

1. Comfort/performance/styling.
2. Fuel economy/servicing costs (I do my own servicing)/insurance price.
3. Initial price of purchase.

Just the way I do it, obviously I wouldn't want an uncomfortable, gutless, ugly car... again.
I also wouldn't want a big block V8 as my daily, for obvious reasons.
Its a mixed bag for me.

I got out of a fuel guzzling BA2 XR6T into a 2010 WT Fiesta diesel. 65L of 98 used to take me no more than 360 k's in the BA, less if I was hard on her, now 33L is taking me 700+k's in the Fiesta.

There's times I miss the BA, like last night when this toolsqueezer in a corolla made himself a new lane beside me and charged past as the light turned green. Wouldn't have happened had I been in the old girl, not a chance.

Overall though I'm very happy with the change, the Fiesta is a brilliant 'little' car which is actually surprisingly large.

to buy a "new" read brandnew car for economy is an oxymoron. First wanting economy means wanting to save money (nothing wrong with that, its smart) but saving money doesnt go with buying a new car (even taxi companies are buying with 40k on the clock to save money) I bought a baxr8 ute with 30k on the clock for 19200 about 10 months ago, given that they cost over 40000 when new, i figure the difference in fuel economy with pretty much anything will never make up the 20000 difference, so in a way this car is economical and i love driving it. If i Hadnt put my Prado on Liquid injection gas i might even convert the ute for even more economy, payback for the gas on the Prado is 35000km approx.

It's interesting how people perceive fuel economy, most do it by how often they fill up or
how much it cost to run a vehicle every week. perhaps a better question is whether people
think they are doing too many kilometres for what they are being paid...

I bought a Focus because I no longer needed a larger car (= EF Falcon). Actually, if I'm honest, I never did need a Falcon, but it wasn't the done thing for a man to buy a small car in the 1990's. Some still reckon this, given the number of comments I see here about hairdressers' cars etc, but it's a trend that's only going to continue. FWIW, my petrol usage has halved, and insurance is also cheaper.

But... everyone should drive what they want/can afford.

as an interesting exercise, did you ever compare the dimensions of the focus and the ef falcon? you'd be surprised at how similar they are. people like yourself that are buying 'small' cars today, are actually buying cars very similar in size to the 'large' cars of the 90's.

if you look at the declining large car market, and compare that with the lwb market share of 10 years ago, you will find they are very similar. buyers are actually buying the same size vehicles on the whole, but the badges are different. even a corolla is as big as an e series falcon.

back to the topic, when i bought my fg, economy was always in the back of my mind as i travel interstate every year, but it wasn't a primary focus. i still only look at fords, and ones that can offer the levels of performance and comfort i need, and still be great family cars. falcon still does that better than most in my book. like many on here, i'm not in a position to buy 'new' so the value is exceptional also.

Having said that though .. Modern motors only use as much as you drive them.. Bigger cars use more fuel in stop start traffic..
Most families have at least two cars .. One 4 cyl and one 6 / 8 for longer distances..
Yep paying the extra fuel on a long trip is worth the extra comfort...
Especially when there more than one occupant in car...

I bought it because its what I wanted. I see all these people concerned about fuel prices - truth is we have it pretty good in Australia. And people who rush out to by new cars that sip the fuel - how long does it take to offset the cost of purchasing a new car? People really need to think things through.

I have always loved the XR5, but im a V8 guy. The focus for me was in my price range, no way i was buying an FPV et al as they are out of my price range.
Fuel wasnt an issue for me when buying my new XR5 purchase price was and it fit just just into it. I can have more fun in the 5 then my old TE50 at half the cost and modding it is much more fun :

You're right, though I didn't do the exercise. It's quite tolerable inside for trips of a few hours for me, the Mrs and the munchkin.

As for the size difference, I can remember just squeezing the EF into the garage, whereas the Focus has about a foot to spare. Given it doesn't feel squeezy inside, I suspect most of the difference length-wise is forward of the front wheels.

I wanted to upsize and change from the Fiesta, so I got a TDCI Focus, I wanted to give diesel a go.

It was between a diesel I30, Cruze and the Focus but the two former dealerships didn't want to deal with me and Ford was all over me when I walked in, so I thought, well F you, Ford won on how they treated me, even though the Cruze had the much better interior.

No, fuel savings are a myth in my opinion, the money saved will just be spent on something else you probably don't need...

15 months ago, I paid $25,888 for my 2006 BF XR8, spent another $4k on mods and it now makes over 430HP...goes as hard as an $80,000 HSV and my combined cycle is just 12.4L/100km!

If I had been more sensible (like that's ever going to happen) and bought a demo base model FG instead, with a combined cycle of 10.1L/100km, I would have saved $1494 ($25/week) in fuel by now.

That means I could have bought a nice exhaust system for that taxi-pack FG I didn't buy

Economy was the furtherest thing from my mine and still is.
