Can't see anything wrong with the current one. Yep, its got the Union Jack in one corner, but last time I checked, that was part of our ancestry. We tell others to be proud of their history and ancestry, so shouldn't be any different for us.

Anyway, I could just imagine the process for designing and selecting a new flag. Good god, by the time we'd appeased all the special interest groups, we'd have flag in the colours of the rainbow with a picture of a gay dugong playing a digeridoo in the top left corner.......

I voted no. Im proud to have the Union Jack in our flag. Whilst they were by no means the original settlers of this land, if there was a way to represent our fellow indigenous population in the existing flag design id happily accept that.

If it aint broken don't try to fix it.
I love our flag, I love its proud history, and no inner suburbs yuppie poof with a 3 series and a proclivity for mens company at the tradesmans entance is going to tell me that it's "old, and boring". We should love our flag the same way the americans love theirs. Keep it, or get stuffed.

I agree. Also lets become a republic already, even more excuse to get rid of it, if we do.

I say we remove the union jack and the southern cross plus the big star.... Wait, now we have just a blue piece of fabric.

Put a Kangaroo or something on it.

If we were to change the flag in this day and age, we'd end up with bloody iFlag 2.0.

Leave it as is. We've had it for this long.

Change the thing. It represents our colonial past and is a constant reminder of links to the British Empire. And lets not kid ourselves it isnt a great past, the British treated our nation with utter disdain.

We need to get our own flag, saying that we've had the flag for ages or we fought under it is not much of an arguement. The diggers fought for the Australian nation, not for a flag or the Union Jack. The flag means nothing to new Australians, how many people still have genuine links to old blighty, not many. Canada a consitutional monarchy like ours changed their flag after WW2 and the world did not end, and I think it really advanced their national standing. How can we expect nations to take us seriously if we still have the union jack on it.

As for new designs well personally I quite like the NT flag. Id gladly wave that flag on Australia day, and it even has a Southern Cross, for our well inked friends.

I have to agree Brent, with all the crazy issues going on right now we'd likely end up with something like this.

I'd be interested to know if any other nation has changed its' flag 200 or so years into its' tenure? Does anyone know.
I am all for changing the flag if the majority do not like the current flag, but you would have to sever monarchal ties with Great Britain before you could convince me it was going to happen.

As much as I would like to become a republic and get rid of the union jack in our flag, I like our flag it has our history (british settlement, even though white people were not the first here), and also the southern cross which everyone in the world relates to Australia. There is also the other history all people who have served under it and fought to keep Australia as it is for aussie and to all the aussie that look up to it. Australia to become a republic but keep the flag.

Since we all love the union jack, I've made something much more appropriate:

It symbolises our great relationship between the USA, which is better than the one with England and the empire....

Mum come up with this lol:

What about the indigenous Australians or Australians who are not of British ancestry? The current flag only represents the period 1788 to 1945 when Australia was predominantly of British ancestry. This flag is becoming less relevant to an increasing percentage of Australia's population. We need one flag for all Australians. Open the white pages at random and you will see that the typical Australian in the 21st century is very cosmopolitan.

Every year this topic comes along....

We are still under British rule. I in fact wrote to the Queen a few weeks ago asking for a parcel of land... Seriously I did! and apparently she replies to all letters sent...we shall see!

But I digress....I think we should leave the flag as it is. I like it. There were some designs in the paper today that weren't too bad.

I like the one with the Southern Cross and the horizon except it was in Blue, red and white. Maybe change our colours to green and gold??

For those who say get rid of the southern cross, when I was overseas, I looked at the night sky and it was so unusual not to see those stars there. It is part of the Southern Hemisphere...keep it I say

Hope you all have a ripper Aussie day. Put on ya double pluggers, head to the beach, have a bbq or/and sink a few coldies. It is our day to celebrate. (and we get a day off work! ) Couldn't get more dinki di than that.

Cheers
Coll

Yeah but even if we are part of British Rule, we have a better relationship with the USA now anyways. So really it should be the 50 stars and the stripes instead of the union jack up there.

Plus as someone else mentioned in another thread, the southern cross isn't just an Aussie thing, its on lots of other country's flags too.

Also we've had like 50 people vote but only a few back up their vote with an opinion.

We're still part of the monarchy... If majority of people want that, then they can have the flag the way it is.

I've always thought that a blue flag, with a black outline of Australia and a southern cross in Australia would be quite good. Any thoughts?
