G'day all,
I've finally managed to get on here now that I am at home (briefly) after 3 very long days of work. This is nothing official, and in no way to I represent the Department of Community Safety, I'm just trying to help out. After a friend of mine became stranded at Albion going to look at the flood waters, I must re-iterate this message..... Keep AWAY from flood water, do NOT try and cross a moving body of water and DON'T try and be a hero, make preparation and get out while you can. Brissy is tipped to peak at 4am this morning so now is the best time to get yourself ready. In order to assist people with their flood enquiries, I've compiled a list of numbers and websites that could prove useful. Stay safe everyone. Regards, GSAU P.S. As for the looters, the Mayor of Ipswich had a very good take on it, "If anyone is caught looting they will be used as depth indicators" or something to that effect. This will also be posted in other flood threads to assist people. |

I think your turning this into a thread about something that its not.... If your demeaning a persons loss because he lives in Brisbane as opposed to Toowoomba suggest you either dont post about it, have another BBQ. There are 3 threads running about the floods, people everywhere north of Rocky have lost everything, some have lost family and freinds.

Some air crash locations overseas had locals pilfering thorough deceased passengers' wallets and taking jewellery as well as aircraft parts to sell later. Same thing happened in the 2001 attacks. Just not right.

The CBD has got lucky compared to Toowoomba, we had ample warnings, we had over precautions in place and nothing has come close to the devastation elsewhere in the state...We got lucky! My point was that we have been able to mow grass, at worst get wet feet and still have our hearts and thoughts with some of the harder hit areas. Show some compassion and focus on those that have lost family and freinds not what might of been in the 'big smoke'

i dont thick he is demeaning the brisbane people at all.
But to put things into prespective brisbane has had warning off what is coming toowoomba and the valley below had none. the other issue is there are alot more commuities away from brisabne and ipswich that are totally wiped out. And others that have been flooded five times in as many weeks. but they are bearly rating a mention right now. it is time the press and pollies stop grand standing and got the whole of queensalnd fixed as fast as possible. there has been very few updates of the water levels out this way but all about brissy. For gods sake people, this is a massive disaster, the entire state is lucky that there has not been more loss off life!
I get what people are saying, but the media DO need to cover the more heavily populated areas like capital cities. I understand it's frustrating that if you are in a remote area you may not be covered as well as the major cities, the Media cannot spend a large amount of time covering a small amount of the population, thats just how it is!! Sure it could of been worse in Brissy, and sure Toowoomba got hit hard with no warning, but at the end of the day this thread is not for debate on who got it easy, who mowed their lawns, or who had a BBQ dinner, its about the 100 000+ peoples lives who HAVE been directly affected, either by losing a loved one, house, workplace, possessions and so on.. For gods sake let this thread please get back on track and away from "you got it easy" posts, rahter then debating lets think about those who have lost everything... Otherwise.... my faith in the AFF community is gone..

If there's any AFF members who need their places checked by a sparky PM me and i will pass on the details of a mate of mine who has his own business, i imagine some of the bigger companies will be flat out and probably hiking prices to make a quick buck or ten.

Disasters can bring out the best in people when it comers to spirit, kindness and in many situations, brave people who without a second thought, put their lives on the line to help a total stranger. However, human nature being what it is, also brings out the worst in people. But let’s not beat around the bush here. Ipswich has more than its fair share of “undesirable” residents and sadly, some of these people are not going to turn into responsible community minded citizens simply because of a natural disaster. Scumbags will usually always be scumbags and there isn’t really a fitting description of these low life’s that will get past the AFF swear filter. I personally can think of few acts lower than looting. RIP to the victims of this horrible flood.

Some brighter news this morning with the peak only going about .5 more than yesterdays by the look of the markers.4.5/4.6 looks to of been the height. Many relieved people around these parts.Plenty of heartbreak further upstream.Thankfull the rain stopped on tuesday night.Been some big stuff going down the river.Looked like the walkway below the Story Bridge broke up a bit and was escorted down the river by the water police.

I never meant to offend anyone or demean the plight if those that are suffering in the affected areas.
After a day sand bagging and moving gear out, watching the water come up as if on cue, and still able to get home across the river with blue skies mow my lawn etc just made it all sureal.

Luckily the flood level isn't as high as projected, but still the damage is done.
I live 4km from Brisbane and there are flooded houses less than 1km away. I have kept an eye out on the flood levels myself and driving through the back of these streets last night was erie because of the power outages. Whole sections of the suburbs have no power. People who's houses have no fear of flood damage have had their power cut because some houses nearby are underwater. I think the power distribution within these suburbs needs to redesigned, it isn't fair on the residents. What really amazes me is that Brisbane City Council publishes detailed maps of flood prone areas, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that these area's are now underwater, but what is a surprise is the massive redevelopment that has be allowed to occur in some of these areas, for example, New Farm, Bulimba and Yeronga. I can sense there being a massive civil law suit coming, the hows and why this happened has a long way to play out. Finally, I know I'm a glass half empty person, don't forget we've had only one tiny cyclone this year, mother nature isn't done yet, it ain't over till the fat lady has sung. |

What has got myself and others worried is that April is tipped to see massive thunder storms, and with the ground not fully dryed out, things could get very interesting once again.
There is a storm cell sitting off the coast which some have said might develop into a cyclone, however the general opinion is this is unlikely, but not impossible. I'm off to work so for any further updates keep tuned into your radio, TV or internet (if it hasn't been cut). The BOM website has a live radar that can be monitored. |

Currently there are two tropical cyclones which are attached to the moonsoon trough.
TC Vince sitting off the WA coast and there is another sitting in the Pacific ocean TC Van (?) neither of which are close to the coast.... but the worry is still there. Also, bread and milk are in short supply, the local Coles hasn't had any deliveries for days and the manager wasn't sure if he'd be able to open because he hasn't got staff for the registers. I had to drive around the suburbs to get milk for the kids, would anyone be surprised to hear that profiteering is happening? |

Yes we had warnings, but that information was wrong, probably because Wivenhoe had a major release ahead of schedule. The police blocked the western freeway and all I could do was watch the water rise from a distance and my industrial unit get swallowed up with flood water. Inside I had my old falcon, mig and tig welders, generator, tools, computers, phones, air conditioning, security system, office furniture, business files and records, etc . It took me months of weekends and pride to build the interior fitout, years to renovate the XP. Somewhere in there is my Acker Doll ! Come Saturday or Sunday I will have to negotiate sewerage and stinking mud to rip out gyprock walls and ceilings, flooring, electrical fittings, insulation, etc. I understand you are trying to order by magnitude, but remember industrial unit owners are rarely offered flood insurance and even then only 1 metre coverage. When you have to find, maybe $100,000+ to make repairs, it still makes your heart sink and it hurts. Think of family businesses like Peter Liddle's who have all their cylinder head reconditioining machinery presumably under 5 metres of water, Hogg racing under even more water, the bloke with import furniture packed to the roof, the bloke down the road who had his offices lined with historic family pictures and war medals. In case members think the RL5.5 metres means actual water level above dry spell river flow, think again. At 1.00pm yesterday the river RL was ~3.4m and the water up the side of my unit was around 4.5m, a good 10 or more metres above the normal creek level. |

Wow...
I've been following the threads on this disaster for days now, spoken with many people about its devastation, and watched grown men shed a tear myself included. Whilst we have not been directly affected quite a few of us have friends and family who have had their lives turned upside down and feel hopless knowing there is little we can do but offer a few dollars here and there and pray that it eases soon so that you guys can clean up and move on. I thought i'd post the lyrics to a well known song, an anthem, which may somehow share our concern and let you know that as our brothers and sisters, we are with you all the way... When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark. At the end of the storm There's a golden sky And the sweet silver Song of a lark. Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams Be tossed and blown. Walk on Walk on With hope in your hearts And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone. You'll never walk alone Queensland! |
