Defence Jobs

Hey Everyone.

Just got sacked on Thursday night, which gives me two weeks to find a new job.

Anyways, I've always been into aircraft, and kinda interested in a defence job. I know this kinda takes up to 3 months to get, so in the mean time, I'll be getting a real average sorta job (greyhound Bus Tickets or something).

I've got to go to what is called the JOES day. What sort of stuff can I expect there.... what sort of formality is it? Just all new for me, so I don't wanna feel like I don't know what I'm doing...

then go for it . something i always wanted to do . i think you wont regret it . but dont take millitary lightly in this day and age . look into it properly 1st . they will sign you up immediately if you suit them , make sure you are ready before you sign.

I was in the army 5 yrs ago and there are also aircraft jobs u can get with them so dont limit yourself to the airforce.

I've appied to be a pilot in the ADF and mate the JOES day is just IQ test and a general chat with your defense recruiter but dress in a suit always makes a good impression

Look at all three of the services, Navy, Army and Air Force. I've been an avionics technician in the Navy for the last ten years and I don't mind it at all. Get as much information from all three services and then make an educated decision.

Airframe/Engine fitter, Elec fitter or avionics fitter in the RAAF are the way to go.
The Main differences in the services:
The Army- Everyone is a soldier first and their trade second
The Navy is a great environment, however there is only maintenance for rotary wing aircraft.
The RAAF has the widest (As you would expect) aircraft variations to maintain and is the slackest for discipline. Still military, but the closest to a civilian job.

How do I know? Spent Ten years in the Navy (Until they got rid of HMAS Melbourne{The Carrier}) and the fixed wing aircraft. Then ten years in the RAAF.

trying to make a point the govt doesnt give a toss about you , and when you are in the military . you are completely at the discretion of them . your at there bbec and call. and you wont be fighting along side JOHN HOWARDS son or any other politician for that matter. if you can handle that . and can live with not making your own decisions , but whatever george bush and john howard wants . at possibly your own demise . then go for it .

That’s a rather one sided look at the defence force. The govt does actually look after the soldiers, sailors and airmen/woman. The point of the defence force to carry out the will of the govt, and people who join are fully aware of that. And contrary to what many people believe the military offers a fair bit of freedom, even full time or regular soldiers still work a 9-5 type day, and they are trained to follow orders but to also think for themselves. I’d recommend it to anybody who believes it is what they really want to do. Doing a trade in the defence force is a great way to get qualified, get fit and also build self discipline. After you complete your joes day, there are further selection criteria such as a psych test and a physical fitness test.

If your looking at avionics, I tried to get into the same job in the air force last year and due to the lack of positions they were really strict, but they were looking for people for the navy and army, so when you go for the second day know exactly what you are going to say and research.

The armed forces is mad and Micheal Moore is a W-Anker! The hardest part is basic training. after that it just gets better. But yea learn the saying HURRY UP N WAIT! but yea if ur intrested do it.

Definately a good choice, but make sure you don't let recruiting steer you into something you don't want to do. Have been told a few stories by guys I joined with of what they wanted to be and what they were offered. Like everything else they have numbers to fill so they steer some people into these jobs. Also if you go down the Tech road you spend alot of time as a trainee.

My advice would be if you're single and happy to travel the world, go Navy. If you have a family and/or want to go home every night, join the RAAF. I started in the Navy and am now in the RAAF as it offers a better family lifestyle. Good Luck and don't hesitate to ask around here, seems there are plenty of serving members

Why stop with the defence force? Why not the police and ambo's as well. Or do you think you may use them one day.
I have done my time in the defence force and all I can say is what a lot of cr@p. 99% percent of the serving and ex-members of the defence force will tell you it's the best thing they have ever done.
If there was more Australians with your view we would have been talking Japanese years ago.
I wonder how many people had a day of on ANZAC day?, or did they work for a bowl of rice.

AU3 Chaser, go for it mate, it's a great place to learn a trade and the values you will learn will help you out in later life.

good post . i agree with you i guess and my opinion is probably a bit too far one sided on this one . also i am not in the military and would not have an experianced comment as you have . so thanks. oh and i have used the police , ambulance, and am here as an australian , speaking english due to australian military personal . of whicjh i am ever great ful. as for dictator ship under which we are now living , i am not greatfull. so i am sorry people have taken my views as one against a military service . i still think as i think i stated earlier . go for it . and believe employment wise it is a great opputunity . but i still feel that it can go hay wire for wrong reasons as well as right ones.
and if you understand and can live with that than go for it.
my way of thinking also applies to mining underground , or building in war zones.

My advice to anyone who is looking at joining the ADF is to not listen to any of the recruiters about what the job is like. Even some of the uniform recruiters will sugar coat it. Ask to talk to someone who is actually doing the job. Thats what I did when I was applying. I asked to talk to someone who wasn't a recruiter. They gave me the name of a 2 ringer down in CERBERUS. And I talked to him for a couple of hours and found out exactly what the job was and the career path and stuff.

I reckon everyone who is thinking of joining to do that as well.

Well, just an update...

On Saturday, I went and did my defence testing (aptitude testing and tech testing, etc).

It turns out I did so well on the tests I can get any technical or non-technical job in the AirForce that I want.

So I'm aiming for Aircraft Techncian and Avionics Techncian.

Should have a psych interview in about a weeks time... wish me luck....

Excellent news on the testing. I was an Avionics Technician in the RAAF for 6 years, then commissioned to Engineering Officer for another 6 years. Although I am no longer a serving member I still work within defence and love every minute of it. If you need someone to talk to more about the RAAF I would be happy to sit down and give you the "unedited" version of life in the RAAF (assuming your still in Canberra), and step you through each stage of your training and career.

It is a well paid and very secure job but depending on your marital status, kids, etc it can be a bit hard on your life as well. Short notice trips away ( 2 days notice for upto 8 weeks away ) No over time if there is a job to be done that day or overnight duties ( may get a day back in lieu ) are some of the downsides plus the possibility of travelling overseas to a unstable country. But there are many benifits too. Extra pay out field, good working conditions ( fair to excellent facilities, very OH&s conscious ), can make good friends who will look out for you and many more you can inquire about.

I say go the trade route too as I did the same in the Army and not only did I find it better as a career but my qualifications I gained are real world useable ( Fitter and Turner)

GO for it but make sure you get all the info and give it considerable thought.
