Forgot to mention the economy. The BMW will drink way less than the Prado and have a heap more power in reserve. A Prado may be reliable (pre DPF). Yep. My dad had a Prado a few years ago and holy hell they are an absolute boat on the road. Bloody average to drive. An X5 would be light years ahead. And you don't get stuck with diesel engine tech that is a few generations behind like you do with a Toyota diesel.

The grande's & Kakadu's with adjustable suspension do make that a lot better. but yes chalk & Cheese.

we only ever did a few 4WD trips too

Pretty sure it will be touch screen. Mine is....Although slightly newer than the one you are looking at i can't imagine it wouldn't be touch screen.

Having said that, once you get used to the Idrive controller, you won't want to use the touch screen anyway. Very easy and intuitive to use.

As for fuel economy, BMW claim 4.6 l/100km freeway consumption for mine. In eco pro mode, i can do the run from home to office on Hume Hwy (70km each way) and bring it down to 3.9. Absolutely amazing.

Have managed 1285km on 65 litres of fuel - extra urban. works out at about 5l/100km.

X5 will be a tad more, but its still a lot better than the Prado.

If you are 100% on road then the BMW will kill the Prado...but...have fun off roading or some medium tracks in a X5.

Our Prado doesnt have some stuff that even a basic bloody corolla gets, infotaintment is crap, no auto headlights etc.

Yes the Prado is a boat, but who actually raves about the way their 4x4 or SUV handles in the mountains...its fit for purpose.

I wasn’t referring to special servces,only regular 10-15k services. Have heard of 100,000 services costing a lot more than $975 if the vehicle needs brake discs and wheel alignment,timing belt etc.A regular servce on my wifes I30 diesel is around $160-180, but if she were silly enough to take it to the rip off dealer the cost would be over$300 for exactly the same job,still a long way off the prices others are quoting.

All well and good if you never leave the dirt. But 95% of them would be lucky to even see a gravel road.

But that also goes for most 4x4's. But at least some of them are getting quite car like to drive. The Prado isn't one of them.

We've never owned an X5 but we've had 3 3 series over the last 10 or so years.
First was my wifes 320 diesel wagon that we bought as an ex demo and kept for 5 years. The car was serviced and maintained and never a problem during ownership. It drove as good as new after 5 years.
I'm on my second i6 petrol 3 series after the first was stolen. Both with DSG gear boxes and both regularly taken to the track, with this latest often doing 2 track days a month with the added load of using slick tyres. Not a single problem to report.

The only thing I'm a bit dubious about is the Tyres.
The brand is SafeRich you guessed it from China LOL
I checked around and the company is no longer..
but they are a good looking tyre and Grip well
So they can stay there for now

I don't know, but I drove a 2018 X3 xdrive 20d today. And yesterday.



It's only ever been back to BMW for regular servicing, and while it's eaten it's tyres a little quicker than I'd prefer, it's a bit of weapon for the 'pov' spec it kind of is.



Still got a year of warranty on it, I hope my brother gets a decent penny for it when he sells it. T'was dad's car, and I wish he still needed it. I'd trade the nice drive for dad any day.



Performance wise, it craps all over our 2015 X-Trail. Comfort and safety wise, flips the argument on it's head, the X-Trail just has more 'stuff' and will do a 4 hour drive and let you out at the other end no worse for wear. The BMW, not so much, although the i-drive stuff is very, very good. Nissan less so for 'gimmickry', but that stuff also works pretty well all things considered.



What can I say, the Nissan is a better family bus, the BMW a nicer thing to be in if kids and dogs aren't part of the equation.



I do hope it won't let you down, as I've got more than a few stories of that happening, usually just before the current BMW becomes the ex-BMW.



Head gasket on the first 528i. Trans failure on the second 528i. Complete ECU failure on 530i #3 (with teeny tiny but very vocal V8) . #4 got traded in for the current one.

Sorry I'm not sure I can take you advice
I haven't driven the Povo pack X3, or the 2015 x trail but highly doubt the nissan rides better
528i was first released the 1980s maybe 90s? its old blowing headgaskets will be from poor maintenance
530i from what I recall was never a V8.

regardless I have a 2016 X5

Agreed a X5 would hardly ever get dirty, so it is an odd cross shop. It would be like comparing a Territory to an Everest, they have different objectives.

Bevsta007 Congrats, I was behind a X5 the other day and couldnt help but notice the tyre package on it, holy hell it was massive with some camber aswell.

The BWM wouldn’t have been intended to be offroad but rather a cold climate vehicle where icy roads would be the norm for a few months of the year.

Funny enough I actually got it pretty dirty at my mates farm on the weekend, felt very precise on some skinny country roads
I agree its more of a car but uses electronics to make it very off road capable

Believe what you want, the X-Trail is what anyone who's been in both it and the X3 would pick on a long drive and the the 2010 dad had before it was awful. Handling and comfort are 2 completely different things, and there's no way the Nissan would keep up with either of the X3 we've had on any kind of road.



Funny enough, the X3 isn't really the Povo pack, not even slightly, but you keep making all the assumptions you want to. Ok? Dad just decided to do without some options that I would have added and because of that it's lacking compared to the Nissan we have, in more than a few areas. The Nissan is JDM not the Oz market one. Completely different animal.



The 530i V8? M60B30.
