Default Will Ford and Holden still be around in 10 years time...

As we are less than 24 hours away from shut down at Broadmeadows, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the future of the two brands that were iconic in Australia.

Discuss, along with the reasoning behind your poll choices.

Ford yes of course! Holden maybe if GM doesn't switch branding which is probably unlikely in only a decade.

You missed out the most important option: both will be around and thriving in 10 years time as importers.

Exactly, where's this option.

Just like Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Volkswagen. As full importers. All these brands once assembled cars in this country but once that ended they didn't just disappear, some of them are more successful now than they ever where when they manufactured here.

I could have put it in there, but I don't see them both surviving. The market is far too cut throat as it is; it is only going to get worse and both are dinosaurs at their core.

Besides, there's a better chance of Franco becoming PM

Those brands you mention shut down when the market was far less crowded and they had the benefit of management that adapted quickly to what the market wanted. Ford and Holden, either through local complacency or negligence from their respective head offices, didn't. And what little they did change was far too late and nowhere near enough.

Can Raptor add this option? It would be interesting to see how many people think that both can survive.

I think that Holden will survive but under a different name to fall in line with the rest of the world.

Mitsubishi is the best example of what will happen to Ford.
Nissan would be the next closest - although they still manufacture components in Oz.

Both those are more relevant than the 70s closures of not only those who Raptor mentioned, but also Renault, who have come back with a bit of strength, British Leyland, which went all over the shop.....And several other brands that were locally assembled from CKD (some who differed from their original spec with the inclusion of some local content to reduce the taxes).

Tariff protections worked in those days, before Whiltam & his mate Button set the ball rolling down a never ending slope.

Holden in years to come be re branded as chev so the bean counters can cut the manufacturing long term costs of producing a lion badge which the locals will rip off anyway and replace with a bow tie anyway

I voted both will survive, although Holden do have a more difficult task ahead given their appalling range of cars outside Commodore. Both brands will become far more dynamic and follow the market with more success once they're not manufacturing here.

I voted for Ford and Holden will disappear as we know them.

Sadly the Falcon and Commodore 6/8's as roomy/grunty family cars of the last recent times are gone.

I've always driven by majority 6cyl Fords and 6cyl Holden's, and to a lesser extent the odd sprinkling of Ford bent 8's. Over the years they've been great cars of both brands. My blood leans to the blue side.

I'm really sorry to see both of the marques go. Falcon/Kingswood/Commodore are iconic brands. I think anyone over 10 years old has had a ride in one of them.

Love/like/hate any Falcon/Kingswood/Commodore - they were all good cars in their own right with all their faults and positives.

Very sad to see the death of iconic cars designed, produced and manufactured in Australia.

Cheers!

What scares me about the closures of the remaining three manufacturers is that very few people realise how much of a negative impact it will have on the nation. The media and govco are trying their darndest to sugar coat it and paint it with optimism but the stark reality is that it will be disastrous come 2018. The economy will not be able to take on so many unemployed.

If only a third of the people that were made redundant with the closure of Mitsubishi's manufacturing were able to find work, how will the 200,000+ fare when it all done and dusted?

I think both will survive, as they both have other models that are shared worldwide. People are still going to buy the Fiesta, Focus, Ranger, Cruze (for some reason), Colorado etc.

Hi. Ford will survive as ford, Holden will survive as one of 3 or 4 GM product lines (vauxhal. opal, chev, pontiac or holden. pick only one) just like Datsun copped the world wide Nissan name.

People really think a global car manufacturer is going to go bust because they stopped making a few thousand Falcons and Territorys a year in Australia?

For comparison, in 2015 Ford sold 2,600,000 cars in the US and 70,000 in Australia.

Of that 70,00 in Australia, 8,500 were Falcon and 9,000 were Territory.

I reckon they'll still be doing OK...

G'day...I voted that both will be around in a decade.. No reason why not. In 20-25 years though I'd be suspecting that a big percentage of cars as we know them now will be powered by dedicated electric or hybrids...I see Ford is already going there with Focus..
The current generation of drivers will probably be the last to own and use 99.9 % of fossil fuel based vehicles so manufacturers will finish or adapt..
Somehow I think both Ford and GM will do that.. what do you think of this http://www.ford.com/cars/focus/trim/electric/ . Then again , there's these lovely old dinosaurs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiC04miJ23Q
Cheers Rod..
