We're restoring an old country house and we've started pulling up the carpets. They've used the newspapers of the day as underlay and we're finding hundreds of ads like this. Heaps of auto related stuff about cars of the time, lots about Jack Brabhams car, and other interesting non car related stuff like reports on American civil rights protests.

Not hard to believe most were fatalities. The ignored fact is that the road toll now is the lowest it's been for nearly sixty years.
I loved the Hillman Super Minx advert...my parents had one of those when I was born and up until I was about five years old. I can still just remember the bright red shiny interior. The Mini is another interesting one...it was most peoples first exposure to front wheel drive, and it was a good one...near perfect packaging, heaps of room for such a small car (something like 10 feet long overall and eight feet of that was for passengers and luggage). They also handled and went far better than people expected. You've got ice in your veins if you wouldn't love an old Mini Cooper in the garage for a weekend plaything... |

That is just awesome. Not only a great find, but a lot of work for you to put them all up, especially seeing you are in the middle of doing up the house!!!!
Great work, it is appreciated by many, including myself |

Thanks very much for the post. The ads are great...so much less sophisticated than todays marketing...just look at the Dodge trucks and utilities ad :-)

Awesome work BPXR6T! Love it all.
Wasn't Australia just such a simpler, innocent place back in those days?

If found a lot of complete papers. They just opened them at the middle page, dumped them on the floor, then laid carpet over the top. They haven't seen daylight in 51 years so are mostly in pretty good shape. This was all when JFK was running things in the states so there's lots of interesting political stuff in there. I'm also surprised with how violent Melbourne was around Richmond and Coburg. Every paper is full of stories of what they called "teenager brasher gangs" randomly beating people up with hammers etc. Sharpies maybe...

Thanks mate, love this old stuff. Compare todays adds with those of yesterday, they look like good fun people, regular couples and kids. Gets me thinking, what will adds look/feel/smell like in another 40 years? Scary.

This is how you advertise a Falcon...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=PZ0iUnDfzN0 Those adverts for the VW Kombi utes!!! When we were looking for a ute before we bought the old V8 WB Kingy, I saw one of them...a dual cab, registered, a little tired but just needing a good clean up...with a for sale sign on it. I asked how much, and the guy said "fifteen grand minimum"... Bugger...don'tcha hate it when someone knows what something is worth instead of being a country bumpkin who thinks it's worthless...?
