Anyway to answer you question yes they are much better than the previous versions so much so that you would not even know they are related (GC I am talking about) however all cars have issues just as the Territory has over the years so maybe the Grand Cherokee will also though I have not heard of any major issues with it yet (such as ball joints failing)

I would not have considered a previous GC however am considering the current model
